According to ESPN's Peter Gammons, the Giants and Barry Zito have agreed to a seven-year deal worth about $18 million per year.

why did you guys think Zito was bluffing and you guys were the only ones looking to land him? not trying to start trouble, but from what I read on the previous page some of you were pulling the Ed Coleman thinking zito signing with mets was a forgone conclusion.......either way, Giants ovepaid for him but I really think you should have overpaid for him also....youre close to winning a championship, but not with that pitching

Omar had nothing to do with it....Im sure Omar wanted him and Wilpon didnt want to spend the dough...which is fine, but if the 5 year 73 mil thing was reallyall the mets wanted to offer than I think thats a little light and a little foolish

I disagree completely. Either the Giants were bidding against themselves, or the Mets were actually in there throwing around very big dollars and were outbid.

A seven-year contract for this guy strikes me as completely insane.

Whether or not it's insane the Mets needed him and needed to pony up. While the Mets were pussyfooting around Zito pretty much every other FA pitcher of any worth was scooped up. Now they've either got to trade some of the kids or be resigned to the fact that they're probably not making the playoffs next year.

    7 years, 126 million.

SEVEN years, ONE HUNDRED TWENTY SIX MILLION

Christ. Screw that. We don't need him.

Excellent point, but the bold part seems a little too extreme.

Then trade some kids. We've got Milledge, Martinez, and Gomez. We can spare something.

you gotta be fucking kidding. How is this team not going to make the playoffs. we have enough pitching to win a division even if glavine or El Duque break down. At this point not over paying for Zito was a good move. This gives us a chance to dump lastings for a starter. To get Zito we would have had to give him 7yrs and 130 million. is he gonna be worth it when he's 36??? is he gonna breakdown like pedro? its still early and Omar will make his move just watch.

Wow 7 years 126 million for Zito? It's obvious Zito was all in it for the money because SF has absolutely no shot at making the playoffs even with Zito in the rotation. I hope he enjoys playing with Barroid and playing for a last place team.

I guess we hope that the Marlins revert to the crappy team everyone thought they would be last year, the Phillies underachiever for the 20th year in a row, and the Braves don't have a resurgance next year, then.

Can't blame the Mets for not matching that kind of stupid money. I always thought it was a lock Zito would be in NY. I wonder what Omar will do now?

The 24 other guys on the Mets must really suck if Barry Zito is that crucial to a good season.

3rd. We get it, everything is bad. Always look for the grey cloud and ignore the silver lining.

We should close up shop and start to rebuild.

What's the silver lining? Wilpon gets to hold onto a few million more? It's only money and Zito was by far the best option out there.
