LaBrie is by far the worst part of DT. Liquid Tension Experiment is a pretty cool band with Petrucci, Rudess and Portnoy.
My favorite band is The Mars Volta (see avatar). They're not "death metal" or really any one genre. They're definitely rock, but fast, loud, progressive rock, with latin/jazz/punk influences. One time, when an interviewer asked them to describe their sound, the lead singer said, "We want to sound like punk-rock Grateful Dead." That's definitely an odd fusion, which is what I love about them.
