To me the most significant improvement in the offense was the effectiveness of the running game and esp Chris Ivory who was horrible last week. If this continues and Marty calls more running plays then I can see things opening up more for Geno. So the key is to me the OL in terms of pass protection and run blocking. No big surprise there but it was a lot better last night than against Tampa Bay.
1st off, I'm a huge fan of a wide open passing attack. MM is good with that, there's just one big BUT coming here. The Eagles were build from the ground up to be that type of attacking team, that's Andy Reid's style. The Jets currently ARE NOT built for that. The team has been built for the past 4 years as a ground and pound team, the personnel just isn't right on this team at this time for a 75% air attack. You just can't switch from Ground and pound 60-70% run based offense to a 60-70% passing offense overnight. Not with a rookie QB and a very thin receiving corp and a questionable O-Line. If I'm going to fault MM for anything it's not adjusting the plan properly to the personnel. It's going to take a season or two in order to overhaul the roster in to a pass first team.
Nothing to complain about with Marty. Play calling was very balanced between run and pass and they did manage to get the running game going. Not a single play in wildcat either. If these receivers held on to some balls it would look alot better.
This, The Patriots realized the Jets had all but abandoned the run and were just sitting on the pass. But it is a baptism by fire I guess, maybe they want to see if the kid grows during the season. Maybe they figure best case he grows and show's himself to be the QB of the future, worst case they draft Bridgewater or Boyd in the 2014 draft.
We have a week to bring in some receivers that can catch the damn ball. Maybe we should check the high schools, I'm sure they would be better than what we have now.
U can't win with Jets fans, every body was sick of the ground and pound style over the years, now were crushing the OC for throwing the ball
Really? People were "sick" of trying "ground and pound" with a depleted offensive line and slow RBs. btw... Sticking with the run in a 3point game in the rain with a rookie QB and shithouse group of WRs, doesn't really qualify as a "ground-n-pound" philosophy...... more like common sense
Agreed 100%. Ivory was gashing them and the just stopped using him. I was really pissed myself. When you RB that is rattling off 4+ yards each carry you have to stick with that guy until they show they can stop him. If Ivory was able to do that continuously it could have really worn down and demoralized their defense. Frustrating.
He kept the Pats defense on their heels...The running game developed because we kept throwing the ball. That means, the Pats did not stack the line. I am telling you right now we had success with our running game by design. Geno missed alot of other reads yesterday...He did not check down enough. I saw him looking down field more...I am going to let it slide. He made two horrendous INT passes but other than that he was going well...I really wish we had that drive back where we had the first INT. The guy was moving the ball effectively at times. We converted first downs initially but then it got worse as the game went on.
Because if Gates catches just two of those three passes, Hill doesn't fumble, Hill doesn't drop a big 3rd down catch, Spadola holds on to the ball... we aren't even mentioning the playcalling.
I honestly thought we would see more of Ivory, but with the torrential rain and the fact that Geno really was not throwing the ball all that poorly until the 4th, I think Marty took the risk of a INT over RB fumble...I still think Marty is an upgrade over Sparano...the game was lost because you can't keep dropping passes and expect to win, especially with MM's game plan.
The Pats Defense was never on their heels, and especially not from the throwing of the ball. Hell they were almost begging the Jets to throw it. The success in the running game was from execution only. The Jets O-line outpowered NE's front in the running game and they were lining up and opening holes. It wasn't trickery there, it was execution. (except when Morningweg inexplicably tried trick running plays - that didn't work. Hello Bohanon) Of course Marty couldn't help himself but ignore that - continue to drop back in the driving rain with a rookie QB and terrible receivers. The passing game they didn't execute- but we knew that by about halfway through the 2nd quarter. A good coach recognizes that, adjusts, and runs the ball down N.E.'s throat for a victory. Remember that horribly called game by Schottenheimer in Seattle's poor weather in 2008?? This was very, very similar. Except Schottenheimer had a HOF vet at QB, and not a rookie QB making his first road start - which almost makes it worse.
With Geno's timing off and the receiving corps not able to catch anything I was wondering if Ivory's fumbling the ball caused them to not go back to him. It was so glaringly obvious the pats couldn't stop him. Even Powell broke a few tackles for once. I feel bad for our Defense who without the help of a secondary shut down Brady series after series. Just one drive which stuck to the run instead of an incompletion on first down forcing us to keep passing would have won the game. I'm kind of glad the pats played so digustingly badly. This way the pain of MM's poor management is alleviated by the honest realization that if we couldn't destroy a team that played that poorly we didn't deserve the win anyway.
