look i love curtis and all but why cant he just retire already. im sick of hearing his name all the time. the guy takes up cap room for absolutely no reason. leave us alone man.
Without the Martin deal in 2002, we would have had to go through a Ravens like purge. If we did that, you guys would have been irate then...
By restructuring, he actually MADE HIMSELF 800K. He really didn't give up money. If he doesn't restructure, and he retires... the Jets cap is hurt, and he doesn't get another dime. By doing this, he stays on the books for another year, helping us with the 2007, and future caps because of the way the bonus pro-rations will go, AND gets an additional 800K.
Curtis Martin is a class act. That's all that needs to be said. If he's playing or not, it's always great to have him on the sidelines with the rest of the team.
This happens every time Curtis restructures and people raise him to sainthood. I love the guy for the way he represented the Jets, and I think he's one of the best players ever to wear a Jets uniform, but he's taking the easy money and still not playing. Belichick would have cut him at the end of 2006.
not that sure about that. Remember, he was at the combine to get to know some players personaly. y would he do something like that if not for the organisation. Plus he had more than a year time, to think about what to do next in his life, and i never heard anything about him wanting to start a buisness or whatever. And lets stay on earth, not even jesus would donate about 3M to his employer when he?s in the mid 30?s without having a plan what to do next. He?ll stay a part of the Jets Organisation.
How could you say something like that? Curtis went out of his way last year to make sure that he wasn't in the spotlight. Did you hear his name once last season? I can't get enough of Curtis Martin, and I'm almost in tears thinking about him cutting ties with football. I grew up watching and idolizing him. A guy with his character comes around almost never. It's one thing if you were talking someone like TO, I get that, but Curtis Martin? He's the ultimate team player and a huge inspiration. He makes me want to be a better person. How could you say that man? I'm not kidding. I'm really upset.
What are you talking about? Martin's, Jones' and Chrebet's deals in 2002 were three of the worst of all time. They were all about 30 and Boobway breaks the bank--He signs Martin for 8 years thru 2009, Chrebet thru the end of 2008 and Marvin thru the end of 2006. Marvin limps thru 2 years of his five year deal and we get stuck eating the rest as part of the last 2 years were guarenteed. Martin played three-plus years of his eight year deal, and Chrebet had 1 touchdown total in each of 2003 and 2004 and none in 2005 (He didn't play thru the end of 2008 as Dumbway envisioned). Your kind of thinking would bring Terry Dumbway back as GM. Even Pennington's $64 M deal was stupid-- the Pats had just given Brady $60 M AFTER Brady won two Super Bowls.
i wasnt trying to offend you or anyone else. like i said, i love curtis, we all do, but i just dont get it. the guy couldve retired in 05, when he was the leading rusher in the nfl. or in 06 when he had that subpar season. but right now he's just ruining everything, just like emmitt smith. and i dont want him getting ridiculed by opposing fans just like emmitt when he was a cardinal. that old washed up guy with a 2.5 yds per carry average. and i dont want curtis to leave NY. he can still go to the games, support us etc. thats basically what he did last season.
I wouldn't say that he's ruining everything. He has said that there's pretty much no chance that he's coming back. It's assumed that he's gone. And it would've been a huge deal had he retired after his rushing title, he didn't show any signs of slowing down in '04. In '05, he had an unfortunate injury in week 2 against Miami, but as the warrior that he always was, he played on it until he was phsyically unable to play. He's done so much for our team, we know he's not coming back. He always puts the team before himself, don't you worry, he'll do the right thing.
cmartins the shizzle dizzle, just try and name another current RB that would do that. (especially since hes not playing next year) EX: Tom brady restructures to clear up cap room for HIS team, for next year. Cman wont even see the field next season.... Your my favorite martin! go jets!
You are absolutely correct. Only Marshall Faulk got more money than Martin that year (after he already got his team a SB victory).
And Belicheck would take more of a cap hit. Yes, he's taking easy money, but it's not all "lose" for the Jets.. they gain cap room. They spend $800K of the owners $ (something we shouldn't care less about) to gain $2.4M of cap money (the real $ we SHOULD care about)
You weren't paying attention back then were ya? If he didn't give them deals like that that would drastically reduce their short-term salary cap hit, we would have had to cut about 25-30 players, like the Ravens did after their Super Bowl win. . I wouldn't lump Pennington's deal into this, but Chrebet/Martin were done to help us field a team... If they would have went the Ravens way, you would have flipped out then so what's the difference.
Role Model I have posted this in the past, and I'll gladly post again. I went to college with Curtis and had the opportunity to meet him on two occasions. Well-spoken, soft-spoken, humble, etc... the list goes on. I was a fan from the day I met him. When you add his story and what he has accomplished on and off the field, you can't help love this guy. My son will be 2 in August and I will be buying him his fist Jets Jersey, #28. He will wear it proudly here in Patsy-Land. All these athletes that say they didn't ask to be a role model need to take a look at Curtis. He didn't ask to be a role model either. He chose to be a man that he is happy to look at in the mirror. I don't see how anyone can have anything but the utmost respect for #28. Curtis is one of the greatest Jets of all-time, and he has always been humble and honorable. It is so sad to see him go out the way he has, but it isn't like he thinks he's had a chance of coming back. People who are saying that it's a lose-lose for the Jets are ridiculous. Imagine a player who was not as humble as Curtis. Another guy would try to play even with the injury so that he could make more than a veteran's minimum 800K. A RB playing with this kind of injury would not only hurt his legacy, but hurt the team by having an ineffective RB playing. I think that this move is a very classy one, and I hope C-Mart stays on as a RB coach or something, and his #28 is retired very soon.
