I just don't understand why some of these posters act like the Mets are a last place team and they make comments like, "the season is over." Now, look back to the beginning of this thread. I don't love this Mets outfit, either, but I do recognize they are a 1st place team and the season is far from over.

These Mets threads are filled with negativity. Its tough to take after a while. This is not the 1993 season for crying out loud.

Bring out the Tarp! Cover the field! I can't watch this anymore, it's over! Turn the lights out! Let's get the bulldozers in here and turn this place into a parking lot!

You realize, of course, that Heilman's failure only reinforces in Willie's mind that he was right in bringing and keeping Mota in.

The real point is that any team that plays as badly as the Mets have at home against a team like the Marlins are just pretenders anyway.

Well, we got through that miserable stretch in May/June, so I think we can get through anything. Also, the Cardinals were as pretender-like as possible last season, and they won the World Series. So, I think the Mets are doing enough, even if they aren't overachieving.

I think last year's Cardinals are going to be forever invoked by teams (and their fans) that just aren't all that good. What is much more likely is that teams that are 4 games below .500 for 60+ games aren't going anywhere even if they make the postseason (particularly when they weren't all that great the rest of the time). The last 5 games have made it very difficult for me to believe that the Mets are serious contenders.

They are playing very soft in this regular season and they act like they just want to get the regular season over with and that they think they'll turn it on in the postseason. Like the '06 Cardinals, they may do just that.

I think the Mets place in the NL East standings classifies them as serious contenders.

I don't know why 5 of 162 games would move you.

In 2000, the Yankees had losing streaks of 5, 6, and 7 games.

I entirely agree with that...I don't think the Cardinals were a fluke in that respect either; before them and the White Sox a string of wild card teams won the World Series every year.

Yes, I get it, the Mets are in first, so therefore they are good, they are contenders, etc., etc.

If you seriously think that being in first place in a weak division where the two other decent teams have played poorly for most of the season makes a team good, there's really nothing to say. I believe that quality is an absolute concept, not a relative one, and by that definition the Mets have been just a tad above mediocre this year. Does that mean they can't win it all, the way other mediocre teams (including the 2000 Yankees, by the way) have? Of course not, but those Yankees had the advantage of a big lead in the standings when they went in the tank in September. These Mets won't make the playoffs playing this way.

wow, this is ridiculous. I'm starting to think of the Yankees fans and their superstition with who starts the game threads. Someone else start one for the next series, please.

I post the Braves one, we lost 2 of 3 at home (not so surprising). I post this one, and we lose the first two at home to the Marlins.

this week is pissing me off

Maybe I will try to start the next one. The Mets were 3-0 last year when I started them.
I think I started 3 this year- the May one against Milwaukee, the one against the Astros around the All Star Break, and maybe another one against a different team. I think maybe the Mets went 6-4 in those games, making them 9-4 total when I start these things.

I don't care whether they win 111 games or 87 games. All I care about is what place they are in the standings after 162 games and how healthy they are at that time.
I don't care about subjectivity, for the most part. Are they great or very good or good or mediocre or fair or weak? I don't care. I just want to know what the standings look like.

Also, the 2000 Yankees 5-game losing streak was in May, I believe. If not May, then June.
