I'll take Alex Smith for this team.

How would you handle 7 starts next year for 2-5 with 1 TD and 11 Int's and a 50.8 completion percentage? How about 7-9 in 2016 with a 58.1 and 16 and 16?

I think most Jets fans will be outraged if that's what the QBing looks like out of the QB of the future and either of the top two prospects has that possibility in them although Mariota is more likely because like Alex Smith he is coming out of a whacky college spread.

I'd draft a QB if the value was right or sign a free agent. I think the odds are pretty good the Jets do both. They can't take Winston or Mariota and expect to throw them out on the field. That's just asking for trouble. If they take one of them and he's good to go, well that's a huge bonus but the expectation should not be that this will happen. Geno isn't going to keep either of those guys on the bench for long unless he's turned the corner and we won't know if that's true until he actually plays. 4 games in and he looks like Geno Smith and the rookie is going to be on the field for better or worse. There'll be billboards if Geno is sucking on the field.

So the Jets take a QB and sign Matt Moore or Ryan Fitzpatrick or somebody they know can stay on the field next year and then they hope they get lucky. There will be a lot of ways to do that in that scenario, with the best being Geno is actually good under pressure and the Jets have a trade chip down the road.

Yes. I agree. But I wouldn't be upset if we signed a competitor for Geno and draft someone next year. I think there is a better crop out there in '16.

You can't sign a competitor for Geno. You have to sign somebody who gets the job when he signs the contract and then if Geno somehow beats him out we've got a bit of an answer to the puzzle. It wouldn't be unprecedented for a young QB under fire to suddenly figure things out. Drew Brees did that in SD after the Charges drafted Philip Rivers. Terry Bradshaw did it TWICE, once when the Steelers drafted Joe Gilliam in 1972 and again when Gilliam took his job in 1974 and then got hurt.

Winston is not the Rodgers of this draft. Don't see it at all, nor do any reputable media outlets. Winston isn't dropping, he's going 1/2. He's favored in this draft, more than Rodgers was when he came out and he'll be favored again after the combine/proday/personal workouts. He's not dropping "later in the round" ala Rodgers. His immature behavior isn't as scary as people think or want to argue and it's not going to stop the bucs/tenn from grabbing him.

So if the Bucs go all the way to the draft with nobody certain who they're going to take and then they take Mariota on the 1 where does Winston go?

I think 6 or falling is the likely answer.

I dont know how true the article was, but it seems like Lovie would rather have Winston as he's played more NFL style football.

I think the same goes for Tennessee. I see them taking Jameis if Mariota or someone else goes first. But i do not see them taking Mariota if Winston goes first. Chan Gailey with the spread SEEMS alot safer for Mariota but it's still a toss-up.

My point was just that the Bucs have the determining pick in which QB goes first and the other guy may well fall a bit after they've made the pick. They may even just go with Glennon for another season assuming they're willing to write it off as a rebuilding season.

I could see the Bucs, Titans or Jets taking a QB in the top 6. It's even possible the Redskins would do that. However if Winston falls on personal concerns and Mariota is seen as the default safe choice it's not clear where he goes in that top 6 or even if he goes there.

In other words, there's no telling what will happen in the draft this year, right?

A week ago Schefter said the Bucs favored Mariota and apparently Lovie and his GM are clashing. I honestly don't believe any of it, but if I were Tampa's GM, I would take Leonard Williams over Mariota and Winston. .. I have no idea why everyone is assuming they'll take a Quarterback, what's stopping them from taking Leonard Williams(he's unreal ); he's the clear cut best player in the draft and unlike Winston or Mariota he'll most likely experience immediate success in the NFL. For all know the Bucs may sign Sam Bradford in FA if he's cut and attempt to trade their pick.

I always thought about that this whole time. There's always a guy like an OLB or DE that shows that he's a ridiculously rare talent and he's a must have and all that good stuff at combines and moves up draft charts. Plus we still gotta go through free agency and such.. alot can change from now til draft day, a wholllllleee lot.

That's exactly right. There's no Clowney at the top of the draft who is close to a lead-pipe cinch in the top 2. The closest is probably Leonard Williams and he could go in the top 5 instead of 1st or 2nd depending on how things shake out.

We could have 3 WR's go in the top 7 or 8 if they look good enough at the combine. Cooper, White and Parker all have the buzz going into the thing and if they blow it away the make-up of the top of the draft could be fundamentally altered with all defense and WR's instead of the QB-led hodge-podge people are predicting now.

This is what excites me about Mariota, that speed out of the pocket is INSANE! When defenses has to worry about THAT happening, passing will be a lot easier.

I would kill to know what the Tampa Bay scouting department thinks about Mariota. I hope they listen
to the critics and he drops to us. But then again if that happens then he will drop to the Eagles.

Agreed, except maybe not about Clowney. I never have any kind of confidence that there is such a thing as a "sure thing". If we took the top ten picks for the last ten years, we'd probably find that most (maybe 2/3) have played, and even started at least three years, but there are the absolute busts and those that have been bench riders and practice squadders. The problem, of course, being where on that spectrum does this year's superstar reside? I wish there was a way to profit from all this wasted energy.

Honestly, the more I think about it the more I think both Winston and Mariota will be gone before our pick. Which I'm fine with, but I do believe that both of the QBs and Amari cooper will be off the board before we go to the stand...unless we trade up but I really, really hope we don't do that.
