Thought you got that, but that's blind faith I guess. I know you guys absolutely love MM, but you guys seem to have this perception that he's the next great QB coming out of the draft. I think the issue is his potential, there are a lot of flaws you guys don't seem to see. I've seen posts where you guys believe he is bust-proof. I can't agree w/ that. I think you guys could do a lot better evaluating this QB to this board.
IMO, my assessment of the QBs of this draft - After Winston and Mariota - rest are crap IMO. Winston still has a huge lead over Mariota in my opinion. At the end of the day, Jets have to do their research - but I won't be surprised if the Jets pass on him. I'd take a hard look at trading down if we get a great package. The concerns are very strong ones.
I see it like this: If the QB is there at 6 you take him. Otherwise we are gonna need to be as bad or worse to have a shot the following draft. I don't want to be arguing Cook v. Prescott in 2016. I'd much prefer to be worried about WR/CB and replacing Mangold by then.
I treat you as individual poster not the Borg, of the anti-Mariota crowd. I would have guessed that would be reciprocated, "but that's blind faith I guess". BTW every QB prospect is "the next great QB coming out of the draft" until they are not.
We tend to evaluate the current crop of QBs in a vacuum. If Mariota is CLEARLY the best QB in the draft, we tend to superimpose him as a great NFL QB. It's ez to do. But imagine for a moment that this draft includes Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning, Arron Rogers, and Mariota as the top 4 QBs.
should we also imagine this years draft includes superman, godzilla, santa claus and the tooth fairy?
C'mon guys, the pick is clearly Superman. Dude can shoot laser beams out of his eyes, who's stopping that?? Scouting report: "Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings at a single bound!". He could probably play QB and WR. SIGN THIS BEAST!!!!!
Dude, he can't even put his underwear on right, he just doesn't have the football IQ. Santa is a logistical mastermind and a sack artist.
Which Aaron Rodgers, the current All Universe one playing on Sundays or the thought to be "system QB" prospect coming out of Cal in 2005?
My one Micael Jackson joke. What do Michael Jackson and Santa have in common? They both like to empty their sack while little boys are sleeping. _
The real question is: if you matched up Superman and Mighty Mouse in the Super Bowl who would win? So far Mighty Mouse has been there twice and won a ring. However Superman did beat Mighty Mouse in the regular season in their only head-to-head matchup so it'd be a tough line for the bookies to make. All of this just highlights how unlikely it is that either of the current prospects joins the discussion. FTR, Winston scares the crap out of me because of the off the field stuff but I think he's a much better prospect than Mariota.
I don't think anybody saw "this" Aaron Rodgers back on his draft day. But he sat for two years, and then used his legs a lot more than he does now while he learned and improved. He is much more subtle now. The other side of the coin, though, is, nobody was willing to risk a 6 on that Aaron Rodgers. You just never know.
Rodgers was seriously evaluated as a potential 1 pick only because the 49ers were going to take a QB come hell or highwater that draft. It was like this draft that we're in now. QB's are desperately needed in several places in the top 10 and so Winston and Mariota will be mocked in the top 10 repeatedly and odds are one of them will actually go there while the other is taken later in the round.
I have no idea what kind of arm Mariota has. I have seen him play 3 times and I cannot determine what kind of arm he has because of his gimmicky offense. Rodgers throws a beautiful ball. If Mariota has a good enough arm, I can then see him following a Rodgers type path, even though Rodgers came out of a pro like offense in college. Because Rodgers still had to sit and watch for years (thanks to Favre--who did not help him), and because early in his career, Rodgers legs bought him the time to learn his craft. He did a lot of running around his first few years. The Jets do not want a guy who will take 3 or 4 years to develop. Of course they may not find a QB for 2 years and he may need time to develop then. I guess I am saying that I might take Mariota if he is there. It is really a difficult one.
The one thing that bugs me is not the talk about Mariota's ability. But the fact that the Jets fans think the team will have a chance at him. He will be gone by the time we draft guys. If he's not grabbed with the first or second pick, then Philly will probably nab him. We should be talking about another player, quarterback is not an option in the first round. Really.
The thing that's interesting is that Winston is the Rodgers in this draft. Mariota is the Alex Smith. If history repeats itself Mariota will go to the Bucs on the 1 and Winston will drop down to the point that some team can't pass on him because his tools and leadership skills are too good to pass up.
