Fact: If Sanchez plays during the OTA's like he played for 4 months straight during the season not only will Geno beat him but Mcelroy will as well.

Agreed. Letting Sanchez start this season serves the Jets in two ways. 1, it establishes a market for Sanchez if he can show that his career and talents are indeed serviceable and 2, it gives Smith time to absorb MM's playbook while watching and learning from Sanchez, positively or negatively, how to play the Qb position at the pro level.

Its a win/win for Idzik and the Jets if Sanchez starts. Even if Sanchez only plays up until 12/1. Idzik still has to be able to evaluate Smith before the 2014 draft and determine if Smith is the guy or he isn't. Either way, a successful start to 2014 by Sanchez only enhances his value on the trade market and benefits the Jets at the same time.

I don't know. You can't really evaluate a quarterback when you play in a bunch of non-pressure games...

Get Geno Smith on the job training now, and let him elevate our franchise. We have a slightly below average offense now. He raises us to 9-7, he's the real deal. Plain and simple.

Quarterbacks don't need to sit and learn these days unless it's behind an established veteran (Brees, Brady, Manning (both))

AJ, the Jets have to establish a market for Sanchez somehow. Geno will get his OJT this season because Idzik has to know if he's is the guy or not. Especially with 2014's Qb class shaping up until now as something special.

9-7 is meaningless in the big picture as we need to get something in exchange for Sanchez if and when its time for him to be traded. This really isn't about Smith, but it is about Sanchez and how to manipulate his value in the eyes of potential customers. We need to re-establish Sanchez's "brand". If not, we might as well keep him until 2015 and just scrap him as we will get nada in return no matter how much of his contract we eat.

Again, no one expects the Jets to be relevant again until 2015 so until then, we have to be shrewd in our personnel moves. We can't badmouth or in any way devalue the Sanchez Brand nor can we allow Sanchez to self destruct.

If the idea is to create a market for Sanchez, then we have to be smart about it. Let him start. The expectations are already low so exploit that by putting Sanchez in situations and positions where he's more prone to success than failure. Re-establish a market for Sanchez by not stating PUBLICALLY that we have already decided Smith is the future. WE fcked up the Revis negotiations because everyone knew the Jets weren't gonna pay up. All TB had to do was wait us out and that's what happened.

Many months ago they didn't have Smith..just don't bet the farm on it and you will be ok.

If he starts it may ruin any potential market there may be for him. You know he could actually get worse.

Its a huge gamble Don I agree, but is there really another option if we're trying to create a market for Sanchez? In addition, do we really want to put Smith behind a line we have no idea how good it will perform as a unit? Wouldn't it be wiser to let Sanchez start and play behind this new OLine and re-establish himself all the while knowing that Smith will get his chance midseason?

I dont see what is so important with creating a market for Sanchez. If he plays like a quality player, I still dont see us getting anything more than a 3rd. Whats a 3rd round pick if we lose a year of seeing what kind of QB we have in Geno? We owe Sanchez nothing. We dont need to showcase his talents (or lack there of) in order to maximize his little trade value. Right now, Im pretty sure we could even get a late round pick for Sanchez while stlll paying the majority of his contract.

9-7 isnt really meaningless if we had Geno at QB, because he would have to play relatively well to get the team their.

Most of these reasons are faulty.

This year's Jets OL should be good enough for Geno to get a chance to stand in the pocket. He's not being thrown into the fire like David Carr. Aslo, it's not like Jets are replacing Sanchez on a SB contending team. If Sanchez wins the job, then so be it. Afraid of playing Geno isn't a reason to start Sanchez though.

If you're a believer in Sanchez then it makes sense you'd want to stick with him no matter what. Personally, I don't feel he's entitled to one last shot & starting job should go to whomever plays better in training camp & preseason.

Nonsense. Didn't we see the entire Jets team rally around McElroy when he entered the game? When McElroy was declared the starter, I don't remember any quotes from people like Mangold or Holmes declaring Sanchez is the leader & should be starting QB.

You don't pick your starting QB based on who's happier to sit on the bench. If Sanchez starts this season on the bench & tanks it mentally then his career as a NFL starter is pretty much done. Also, I think you're selling him short there. No matter how much he's struggled, I've never gotten the vibe off him that he's quit mentally.

Moving forward > Increasing Sanchez's trade value

What happens if they start Sanchez, he actually does really well (not very likely) and his trade value increases... and then suffers a long term injury in game 15?

You e established a market for him.

Look at the converse, you cut Sanchez, and willie colon gets beat by a young LB, or the other guard, Ducasse or a rookie gets beat, and Geno gets his knee blown.

Now, you are settting the organization back rhree years.

Or you dont cut Sanchez, the above happens, Sanchez plays well. Now, youve damaged your QB of the future, are married to a guy you allegedly want to dump.

Or, you dont cut Sanchez, and he plays poorly, thats back to the first situation...Geno is damaged, and another QB ruined.

The only sensible move is to Start Sanchez, if he gets hurt, there is zero downside for the Jets. And youre already paying him a ton of cash.

If he does play well, you can either trade, or keep him at a favorable Salary cap position, between Smith and Sanchez, and that will allow you to go into 14 loaded for bear.

If you think, Geno Smith is the future of the Jets, starting him now....is retarded.

Mangold, and Brick, cannot cover for Howard, in his second year and two new guards.

Thats like starting Rookie Everett McIver against Bruce Smith in his first game.

Call Boomer Esiason, ask him how that worked out.

It might be different if you were only replacing one guard...but both..not so much.

How did the team rally around him, in that 11 sack debacle?

Look..its not all that esoteric. The idea is to win, and keep winning going forward. Exposing a rookie, to an Oline with two new guards, while digesting the ability to read NFL defenses, let alone Rexs defense now in Buffalo, and Belli, in Ne, is absurd....especially consodering the other factors.

FCOL, they are working on having him get up to speed playing under center...so, hes concentrating on his forst move....getting the ball out...while Pettine, or Belli, are scheming against your Guards? Yeah..waynto do right by Geno.

Thats far worse than the organization giving Sanchez no continuity at the skill positions.

Follow the comment I'm replying to. The original statement was that Mangold & Holmes see Sanchez as the leader of this team & that's why Sanchez should start. McElroy getting sacked 11 times is not an indicator that his teammates left him to fail because they'd rather have Sanchez there because he's the leader. If his teammates didn't want to rally around McElroy, then he wouldn't have been able to pull out that first game he entered.

Sorry. Not seeing it. McElroy came in late in a 6-0game, and scored 7.
Thats indicative of a late game change in play calling, and a temporary spark.

But, at the end of the day, theres no way a shortened decision, favors the rookie.

No prob. Just to clear the air. I'm NOT saying McElroy is/was the better QB. My point is that the players on this roster will rally behind whoever is named starter. Sanchez, Geno, McElory, mystery QB #4, will each have the team rallying around them if they're named starter. Now who you think is the best QB available is a totally separate argument.

As long as Rex is the HC, Mark will start. To think otherwise is foolish.

This guy is more worthless than any other poster that is currently on the forum. Do a post history. He's either a troll or has no interest in actually talking about the game of football.

Either way, he's a zit on the ass of TGG.

If he had is choice, I'd have to agree. Sanchez is Rex's achilles heal. That's why this whole situation will really be the test of whether or not Idzik is a decent GM, or a shitty GM. If Idzik cuts Sanchez June 1st, the Jets have a chance to have a decent year and a bright future. If he leaves the decision up to Rex, he is dog shit and will fail.
