Gholston is going to walk away from football sooner rather than later. Take it to the bank! (Bold, I'm aware)
Kurt dropping some knowledge! I wouldn't be surprised if Mount Vernon's development makes immense iprovement over the offseason, after he digests and assimilates it all. Trying to make him into a complte backer from Day One definitely stunts his growth initially, but it may be the best way in the end.
Part of the benching is motivational, and part of it is real. Look at it this way. The ST's seemed to miss Smith this week. If he is healthy, he will play. Clowney took that roster spot, and was productive. At this point it is either Clowney or Gholston. You can have Gholston charging into OT's, and being smothered, or Clowney making 26 yard catches. Clowney has earned the right to be on the field. Gholston hasn't
His mental state? WHAAAAAAAAAH! The guy has already made more than most (most likely ALL) of us will in a lifetime, and has done nothing to show for it. Toughen up and earn your keep. Let the the best players play. Nice to see Mangini show some balls.
I am worried, but I will offer this; Dallas's leading sacker had a horrid rookie year last year. Hopefully we will start to see some glimmer out of VG to be optimistic about. Are there any BJs on the Flight Crew? That might perk him up.
If he wasn't self motivated he wouldn't go from not playing football until mid-HS to being the 6th pick in the draft. And he certainly wouldn't be as ripped as he is. Maybe he's just a rookie?
Parcells is famous for being a motivator. He'll use anything and everything to get his guys fired up. If he needs to talk about your mother, he'll do it. If he needs to bring up your dead aunt, he'll do it. If he needs to talk about your small package, he'll do it. I know this from first-hand accounts. He's one of the worst with mind-games, which has helped make him one of the best.
Why? What has he said to make you be concerned with his mental state of mind? He's called LT to get advise. He's working hard. They threw a lot at him this year in a short amount of time (he missed some of the mini camps and some of training camp). He needs to gather all the information and start becoming more of an instinctual player than over thinking everything. That will start happening with more experience. I fully expect him to be a big time player next season. Not every rookie picks it up immediately, especially those that are going thru a position change.
I should have phrased my post differently. Tressel's not going to disparage a player who didn't cause trouble and make the program look bad. Gholston didn't have any issues at Ohio State as far as we know, and, thus, Tressel will say good things about him. College coaches do that. I mean, it's common sense.
That's what happens with some people when you give them 30 or 40 million dollars before they even step on the practice field.
I don't care how much has been crammed into your head. When it's an obvious passing situation, and you're not touched (as he has been more than twice this season) and your 'strength' is passrushing- you make a play- you go into 2nd gear, close on the QB, wreak havoc, finish. Gholston doesn't. When you've already committed to rushing the passer, and are engaged with blocker- it doesn't matter how much you're struggling to be a complete LB, if you have natural ability you don't get pushed back 2 or 3 yards- you don't stay locked up with him without even trying to make a move- and you certainly don't run 7 yards upfield, only to be easily sealed by the T. Some aspects of his game may be lacking because of the mental aspect- but he has shown zero passrushing ability- and in college he didn't do anything to show me he was anything other than a man among boys. I didn't see anything close to exceptional talent there- just superior physical ability.
you seem to be saying this as if you personally know him.. if that is the case, how about getting him to come to my home opener party....
Truer words were never spoken--you have to crawl before you walk--he should have been just a pass rusher at first and then worked into a complete LB--now I'm wondering if he'll ever be either.
Mangini's comparing VG to the likes of Drew Coleman and David Barret? I don't like the sound of that. I don't like it one bit.
