Most of your post is on the money, but for some of you to sit there and believe his sideline demeanor, his "gum chewing" some how decides games is still at best, laughable. He carry's himself as a professional and doesn't get too fired up one way or the other on the sideline. It doesn't mean he is without passion for the game, or that he lacks leadership that people want. Not every player responds to a coach screaming in their face.

You are right about his having some lesson to learn though. That is to be expected of a young HC starting out. Now Cleveland will roll the dice on whether he learns and grows, or stumbles and falls.

I too never understood the love affair with Rob Ryan. He has a pretty good amount of talent on that team, granted its raw, but its his job to develop them and he has failed miserably. Just look at what his brother did for fabian washington that he could never do after the Raiders dumped him.

As fans we don't know what goes on inside the locker room. All we can comment on is what we see on the sidelines. And it's my opinion that Mangini would be well served by showing a little more emotion. He doesn't have to become a screaming, spit-flying lunatic but the man should display more feelings than a toaster. Not ever player responds to emotions but some definitely do. Throw a clipboard. Yell at someone. Let them know that you've still got a pulse every once and a while. The whole "too cool for school" attitude is just tiresome.

But I will say the guy is putting together a solid staff at Cleveland in very short order. Ryan is a great hire for DC. And the Ravens guy for GM is superb. Baltimore has been excellent in the draft for many years now. So Eric is making some astute personnel decisions.

It's too bad Mangini couldn't have grown as a young coach with the Jets. But I think Eric had run his course here and could not have returned. I think he lost the team with the late collapse and there was just no coming back.

Funny probably means if Mangini had stayed here Sutton would've been fired and Ryan would be here after all.

If everyone hasn't worked out how to play a Mangini team by now, then shame on them. Defend the short pass, sit back and enjoy the lack of a short yardage running game. If Mangini goes for a medium pass it'll be across the middle, if he actually goes for a long pass he'll use receivers with no speed. Oh yeah and if his run game gets going, at some point he'll forget about it and go back to the short passing game. Defensively he'll use a zone coverage that no one understands, while fitting square pegs into round holes all over the defensive line. Hell, square pegs into round holes all over your team.

Dude, you need to realize what gum chewing and arm folding actually MEANS. He doesn't care. DAMMIT MAN can you not understand that?

It's not like people completely made that up just because the team hit a funk at the end of the season. Mangini DIDN'T and DOESN'T care about the actual games once he starts losing. Once he starts losing, all he wants to do is go home, eat some donuts, study old BB gameplans, and then water them down cause they're too complicated for him.

Cleveland should also be warned about his press conferences. He's boring, and doesn't give people any details about his team or what he's doing. Plus, he constantly throws players under the bus.

I'm trying to think of the other shit people started making up once it became clear that people were bored of Mangini. What else is there?

Oh yea. Next year, anyone playing the Browns only has to pass the ball, cause Mangini can't stop the pass.

What else what else...I'm out of ammo I guess. We need to make more shit up based off of the 3 second clips of the sidelines we see. Can't wait 'til next year. I hope New Guy doesn't like gum, and prefers to keep his arms in the air or by his side.

You know, I find it amusing how many of you talk about Mangini's lack of emotion yet, his players don't seem to be bothered by it one bit.

I remember many times after bad games where a player would speak up about how the coach lit into them in the locker room. None of us knew what when on behind those closed doors. I have heard stories in the press about how players were not allow to speak to the coach in the hallways and all the rules for this and that. You know what, sure I'm sure there were some things that needed to be changed, but most of this stuff is bullshit !

You know how I can tell, find me one story where players are talking crap about Mangini. Seems to me to a man, most feel like they let him down. All I hear is players talking about what a good coach he was, how much they have learned from him, how happy they are that he was hired by the Browns. Most of the trash talk is coming from boards like these, and sports radio, you know, the know it all experts and the fans.

Did the man make mistakes without a doubt ! Yet, if you step back and look at the situation fairly, many of the things he is being blamed for may have been tottally out of his control. One has to wonder if after the Farve trade he was told to taylor his game plans to what ever Brett felt comfortable with and wanted to do.

We all know last year he wanted and went after Ryan out in Oakland. Would have got him to, if that escapee from a nursing home Davis would have let him go. So you know he wanted a different approach to his defense, and Nutton was not his first choice. No doubt he would have gotten him or Crennel for the Jets for next season. You may get to see what the Jets might have looked like next year by watching the Browns. I don't expect to see too many 3 man pass rushes !!!

So in the end maybe it was Mangini who was on the even keel and keeping it real. Keeping his eye on the prize with a logical plan on how to get there and getting closer with each of the passing three seasons.

An the fans and the experts, talk show host, owner , were the one that were too emotional and carried away and lost sight of the fact that it does talk a few years to bring it all together and you have to be strong against the emotional bumps in the road along the way......

Daboll sucks, losing him is a step in the right direction. He was QB coach and our QBs got worse the longer they were coached by him. We have three talented young QBs, getting a good QB coach for them has to be a priority. I've said this many times before, Daboll is a loser, he played safety at a div 3 school, making him QB coach was insane. One of Daboll's genius ideas was to throw tennis balls at Chad Pennington's face during meetings while asking him about the playbook. This was supposed to make him cool under pressure. So now he will be throwing tennis balls at Brady Quinn, expect this talented player to decline under Daboll and expect all four of our QBs to get better.

LMAO... the new guy should randomly run up and down the sideline and wave his arms in the air like they are on fire. We need a "different" guy in there.

I was one of those who said Mangini would never work in the NFL again, unfortunately for football fans in NE Ohio I was wrong about that. But I won't be wrong about Manboobs being a crappy coach, his turn with the Browns will be like Kotite going to the Jets. Kotite took a great Philly team and made them average and then took an average Jets team and made them 1-15. It will be similar for Mangini, his second team isn't as good as his first and now he will turn them into a cellar dweller. The whole thing will turn into a painful joke for the fans. Brady Quinn's career will be set back, maybe even ruined. There will be a player mutiny, the whole thing will be a shambles.

theres nothing more that i hate than a coach who isn't fired up on the sideline, who doesnt display passion in his team. the stoic, conservatism, is NOT the NY Jets.

you had fans more involved in the game than he was, and he was the one calling the plays. supposedly.

I hear where you are coming from... you want to know the guy is disgusted when the shit hits the fan. As fans, we want to know he cares and see it. As he develops more as a coach maybe he'll do more of that. When he's more comfortable managing the game on the sidelines. I've always taken his stoic-ness on the sidelines for being focused on what is happening in the game and keeping from getting distracted- even by bad plays. I have no doubt the guy is passionate and full of emotion about the game though. He's just got one hell of a poker face is all.

Um....his second team isn't as good as his first? I wish.

What sucks is that it's not even true...their D is about as talented as ours is and their O has two receiving playmakers to our...1 (.5 Cotch .5 Keller).

The more I read this board, the more I hope Mangini wins a Super Bowl with the Browns. I like the pieces they've got over there...think of them as the Cardinals replacement as that team everyones waiting to see break out.

You're a good new poster. Please don't fall for cheap, shit analysis like this and include it in your posts.

Heads up to the board: Fucking chewing gum and not going apeshit for every mistake on the sidelines doesn't mean shit. Theres nothing in the rule book that says coaches have to fucking ACT on the sidelines too. It's as dumb as me blaming 40 years of losing partially on fan ignorance....probably much, much dumber. Unless you guys are looking to get entertained more than fucking winning, this is a dumb shit piece of criteria for what makes a good HC and what doesn't.

As usual the good posts get ignored, and the nonsense gets the plethora of responses. This is pretty dead on. I wasn't in love with some of Mangini's moves, but what you say is true. To a certain degree he was handicapped with a situation not of his own making. And if players need a coach yelling in their face to get them to play hard I wonder what the heck they're doing in the NFL.

Interesting thing I find about this is that Spagnuolo also interview for this job and was given no consideration at all. Maybe there is some truth about him not being all that great in interviews.

I guess if he hired Ryan then Crennell is available to be somebody's DC. Not sure I would want him but some here probably would.
