Even the idzic s scouts argument is weak. Mac still looked at the tape of these guys he picked. Scouted some of them himself. It’s not like he was just handed a list of names. The guy was a scout.
That is what I meant when in the past I've said that Woody is "penny-wise and pound foolish". Sure he's spent a lot of money - sometimes - but where it really counts he tight fisted.
It does sting But what would be most helpful would be to rate his drafts vs other 31 GMs of that year Is he dead last? Mid pack? Were his picks maligned at the time and laughable? I don’t remember
Ad what did that "draft discipline" yield? A glut at the interior DL, and no real pass rush for which we're still paying. You guys act like drafting for need shows that you're weak or stupid, when in fact ignoring need is what's stupid. Look, Macc's record is clear and it's not pretty, and it's supposedly based upon BPA. Yet when he traded up for a chance at a FQB, that was NOT a BPA strategy and it worked. I'm not saying that you simply draft on pure need, but it has to be a top consideration, ahead of pure BPA. It's when you combine the two - what do I need to most, and who is the best player of that type available - that you have success. On balance, I actually like Macc, and like that he takes chances, but he has to change some things in his approach or he won't be the GM much longer.
Who would you consider as being the best NFL drafting GM of All-Time over the past 30 years? Just wondering. Please, let me know. Because with the way football and the draft(s) have always worked I'm pretty sure that I can also dissect their draft(s) apart and completely break them all down; all while highlighting and focusing on all of their bad blunders (as well). And I absolutely hate and can not stand this "damned if you do, dammed if you dont" type of hypocritical theory of... Williams, Adams and Darnold "all fell to Maccagnan". Because he could've just as easily passed on all three of these guys, just as 12 other GM's did the same (prior) to Maccagnan saying enough is enough and finally deciding to pull the plug on all 3. And rightfully so. Can't have it both ways in order to fit an agenda...
Lets review the next three drafts after 2015: 2016 - 3 Starters: Lee, Jenkins, and Shell 2017 - 2-3 Starters: Adams, Maye, and Ledgett (if he starts) 2018 - 2 starters: Darnold and Shepard. Still really early here and we didn't even have a second rounder. I'd honestly give it a C+. I don't think these are bad drafts, and I would think 2-3 starters per draft is kind of what you are looking for as rounds 4-7 are typically to fill depth. I think the problematic issue more so than getting starters is that Mac has done a bad job in the late rounds as it shows in the poor depth we have. He has been able to mitigate that a bit with some creative trades in the later rounds and free agency moves, but I'd rather see more homegrown talent succeeding.
Cause hes a shitty coach ... you can have an eye for talent and still be a bad teacher. Him and Tanny did good building that team
I agree a C+, but it's not simply the "misses" that are his problem, it's that he hasn't filled the really big and long-standing problem areas, except maybe QB now finally. Pass Rush and OL are STILL problems. And his "hits" haven't offset these. That is his problem.
Thought Devin Smith would be something. Was an incredible collegiate deep threat and never missed a game. Just bad luck what happened to him
For better or worse these guys basically kept the same offensive line as last year. My thinking is that they want to evaluate how they all do in the new system before making changes next year. Last year we had so many holes that we really could have gone in any direction to fill holes to improve the team. Unfortunately we had another DE crap out on us with Mo’s exit and of course we cannot go without 2 decent DEs. It must be written in the Jets bylaws or something. So we spend a lot our remaining draft capital going d-line. Fortunately, I think Shepard and Williams are class acts and should be here for awhile. Now what’s good is that literally can’t go DE next year because they already have two good starters under 25. I expect they will go offensive line or pass rush or trade up/down trying to get one next year.
With Macc you cannot predict where he will go in the draft. he thinks he's the smartest GM in the NFL.He's just too unpredictable and that is not a bad thing but his draft results at this moment have to be a C-. Darnold could bump that up significantly.
But easier picking players after you know what happens. Out of that list of mostly third rounders, how many fell to us in the third for Mac to pass on ? Or should he have reached and grabbed them with a second ? Knowing that they have become good players a second would be fair but at the time not, all the other GM s let them pass twice minimum as well. Hindsight is a wonderful skill
