Plus 1000 All TGG does is homer for Bowles and Mac I would have homered for Mac forever if not for his terrible mistakes with $: 80 million cap spent on Defense that doesn't produce The Revis Overpayment The Wilk overpayment The Fitz Overpayment He can't fire Bowles and that's a pass I'll give him..Meanwhile the Johnsons encourage Bowles laziness by equally footing him with Mac...very bad Management. At this point if Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen aquired the Jets I wouldn't complain
Ryan Leaf and JaMarcus Russell said hi...... Seriously, your 100% right about the coaches trying to force a QB prospect into a system instead of trying to adjust the system to the QBs strengths. I believe that is what separates the great coaches from the rest. However plenty of QBs with the size and arm strength and athleticism are just bad. The mental aspect can't be taught or coached. A player either has it, or they don't. It can be masked at the college level, but is quickly exposed at the next level.
Theres A LOT to pick apart here but I'll just stick to the bigger picture. It's been said many times but it bears repeating, Petty was drafted in the 4th round for a reason. Why are we setting such a high standard for this guy? The fact that Petty is still on an NFL roster already makes him better than most. I'd bet any amount of money that if you went back to take a look at all the QBs drafted in 4th round for the past 30 years you'd be hard pressed to find more than 1 FQB among them. I leave the possibility of 1 because there's usually always an outlier that people want to point to as the norm. Bowles is responsible for a lot of bad on this team but Petty is not one of them.
Spot on!!! I can't think of any way to improve what you just posted. Now, if only someone on the Jets would hear it and do something about it.
If Petty was such a waste, why bother using a 4th on him? But the reality is, as Greensleeves points out, that he did have some ability, and that COULD'VE been coached up, but was ignored by Bowles and his OC. Petty may not pan out, but if he fails, a large portion has to be meted out to his coaches.
Well then almost every CS in the last 30+ years have failed in that capacity too. It's not like 4th round QBs are developing everywhere across the league except for the Jets. I don't get the Petty mania. He was and remained flawed (more than most) prospect. He was older with sloppy footwork and accuracy issues who for good measure was coming from the Spread in the Big 12. That's a lot to overcome. Somehow the coaching staff was to take all that and make a starter out of him? It's crazy talk. If I was running the show, I would have traded the farm for Mariota that year. If that fell through, I would pass on taking a QB all together or maybe take a flyer on Shane Carden with a 7th round pick or something. The crop outside of Winston and Mariota was sh*t. If forced to draft a QB where Petty was picked, it would have probably been Hundley since his biggest negative was that he held on to the ball too long, an easier fix than the stuff Petty needed to work on. All that said, I didn't think Petty the pick was a bad pick. It actually was one of the rare instances where the QB fit the concurrent scheme. So "waste" is your word not mine. Mac took a shot at a QB in the 4th. Nothing came of it, no harm no foul. Petty is a great kid but is really not worth all the key board characters pressed in his defense on this message board. He's the new Brett Ratcliff or Matt Simms I guess.
We all know Mac's plan for developing a QB. Let another team, or ten develop him and sign him for a year or two before he starts collecting Social security.....
Hey Tony thanks for the Memo! Come this Sept>>>>>>Get Medicare Sept '19>>>>>>>>>After about 40 years hard work get a nice chunk of change from SS..yoo hoo BTW did you start yet?
The entire QB roster should be fired. However, I think that due to our draft position we can't do it. Drafting a second tier QB and starting him right off the bat would bear no fruit, we'd just get Petty 2.0. So it's either start McCown or Hack, imo that's a lose-lose situation. We might argue that this year's second tier QB would be leaps and bounds better than Petty, but I don't know about that. Even if he is, we don't have the coaching staff that can develop prospects or is even interested in it I think.
