Maccagnan's Youth Movement is Real. Could 2017 Jets field the NFL's youngest team?

The Jets now have ONE year to evaluate Hackenberg. If he stinks or never see the field this year all this pipe dreaming goes back to what do we do now. So do they take another QB next year or sign one in free agency? Looking at WR's and RB in the draft and free agency does nothing until they find someone that can quarterback this team.

I understand the release of Eric Decker when looking at the big picture.

He's now 30 years old and after playing in only 3 games last year due to a shoulder injury the writing was on the wall (youth movement).

Not only that but before attacking 2018's Free Agency Class (which will be loaded with WR's much better than that of Eric Decker); Maccagnan must first see what we have in Quincy Enunwa & Robby Anderson as our #1 & #2 WR duo who together combined for 100 receptions, 1,444 receiving yards and 6 TD receptions despite awful QB play last year.

As 2nd year & 4th year players it's a must to see what Quincy & Robby can do together as a 1-2 punch while only @ 25 and 24 years of age.

    Also.

We just drafted two WR's back to back during the 3rd and 4th rounds and with Decker no longer here this now gives younger players and prospects such as Charone Peake out of Clemson, ArDarius Stewart out of Alabama and Chad Hansen an opportunity to compete againt one another for the #3 WR spot behind Enunwa and Anderson.

With Eric Decker here this type of evaluation process wouldn't have been possible while looking to attack 2018's offseason through both Free Agency and the draft.

    In closing.

With a youth movement also comes a culture change.

Last offseaon the likes of Brandon Marshall, Nick Mangold and yes, Eric Decker were all in full support of Ryan Fitzpatrick and better known as "Team Fitz".

Instead of keeping it in house and within the locker room; they all ran to the media to make it known that they wanted Shitztragic back as their starting QB.

It forced Macc's hands as a GM & made making a QB change more difficult on coach Bowles due to the veteran presence in that locker room.

The likes of Decker all overlooked the young gun QB's such as Bryce Petty in order to publically SHOW their support for a career losing veteran journeyman in Fitzpatrick.

Well they should all be ashamed of themselves and embarrassed that the QB of their choice (demand) in Fitzpatrick just went 3-8 overall due to ranking 25th in average yards per pass attempt, 27th in passing yards, 28th in INT's thrown, 28th in completions completed, 29th in completion percentage, 29th in TD's thrown, 30th in both INT percentage and dead last 30th in QB Rating.

    Now thinking about it.

A young QB such as a Hackenberg needs young & hungry receivers to believe in him. Not veteran WR's screaming for the likes of career journeyman losers in Fitzpatrick & McCown just so they can "get their WR numbers up". Maccagnan and Bowles doesn't need to see it nor hear about it either.

The likes of Marshall & Decker had to go. Maybe they can form "team fitz" somewhere else.

Why do people actually think the youth movement means something positive?

Ok they're going with young guys, great, but are any of them actually good? Seriously, who on the roster is young and likely to become one of the best players at the league at their position? It's a bunch of scrubs, a few question marks, and a few guys who are solid contributors but unlikely to be game changers.

All of the vets are gone, this team is hot garbage for 2 probably 3 years minimum. Face facts. With some luck they'll draft the right QB next year and some of these young unproven guys will turn into the core of the next generation. But don't think this is going to be anything but very very ugly for the near term.

Only Rodgers has returned and he wasn't the DC last year. Bowles was. This season he will actually get to be the acting DC not just hold the title. Will he be any good , can't answer until he has an opportunity to show us. quarterbacks coach ,running backs coach, defensive line coach , outside linebackers coach , defensive backs coach ,OC , and also added were Mick Lombardi (offensive assistant QB) , Jason Varable offensive assistant, and a very overlooked move Joe Giacobbe was hired from Rutgers as strength and conditioning coach. Giacobbe is very highly regarded and our team has been lacking in the conditioning Dept.
The vast majority of the staff was changed.
I don't think the morale of the team is shaken at all. I think it has actually been boosted.
I understand the fustration surrounding Decker but he doesn't fit on this team. We are in full rebuild. Youth is King . Players with a one or two year window that won't be here in 2018,19, don't need to eat cap space or roster spots.
Ask yourself this, We're we a playoff team yesterday with Decker ? If you say no , his subtraction only gives a young receiver more reps and game experience to develop. The $5.75 million in cap savings can also carry over and be used to sign young FAs. O line ,pass rush. I know your next argument will be ,no FA will sign here, yet the Browns signed some of the top FAs. Young FAs. The FAs who won't sign are the old, one last payday 30 something vets we have chased for too long. Quality young players on their second deals would sign on to a Jets team that has a promising young roster with out question.
McCown was signed to mentor Hack and Petty and to ensure we have a third option at QB. Petty was still rehabbing, so we would have been coming into the season with only Hack , and no backup. We're Paying McCown backup money. QBs are expensive and few are ever available.
There is no difference between a rebuild and full tank. This team is going to play hard and do everything they can to win with a young roster. We could have lost as many or more games with last year's vets this year but where's the future in that? Let the kids develop. If we find a QB in hack or Petty , we trade down and add extra picks, if not we're in position to take a QB early. At least that QB will have players around him with game experience.
Ignore Manish, Costello and Cimini. They spent all off season writing how Decker was key to this season and now the rug was pulled out from under them. Decker was going to be cut all along. It was just pending his physical. Harris refused a pay cut. Davis and maybe even one of the young players showed enough in OTAs to make him expendable. It's not 2011 and Harris is not coming off a great season. He regressed every year since. It sadly, is time to move on from vets who are not performing at the level of their salary. If we had drafted well in past years, it wouldn't even be news worthy.

We have to find out what Hack and Petty can do. No pipe dreams. Either one or both can play at a high level or we will be in a position to draft a QB in a QB rich draft next year. You keep saying the same thing , but fail to see that QB is the franchise's goal in all this. Still have to have a team to develop along with the QB.

Rodger was DC for 2 years so what exactly was he doing if Bowles was calling the defensive plays? That is a problem right there if your head coach is suppose to be observing and coaching all phases of the team and not game planning and calling defensive plays.

I don't follow Cimini, Manish or any other beat writer.

McCown as mentor? He was signed for starter money and he's been on numerous teams and I don't remember Cody kessler being better with McCown mentoring him.

These young QB's and McCown are gonna need someone they can go to in the clutch or just to get a first down. I don't see a receiver on the Jets roster now that Decker is gone. Its gonna be a long season.

The Jets aren't that lucky or good, a tank job and rebuild is crazy. There are only 16 games in an NFL season and the Jets are wasting the 2017 season. Plus Maccagnan hasn't drafted well and his free agent pick ups have been spotty. I don't think he has a big picture plan for the Jets.

You were right we weren't a playoff team with Decker and Harris but at least you had two guys that would fight for you and compete. Right now there are only 2 guys like that and they are on defense. There is no one you can depend on from the offensive side. I can deal with a rebuild but a tank is unacceptable and a real scumbag way to play in a professional league. Glad I'm not a season ticket holder because I would asked for a refund. Notice the slimy way they did it too. Waited till June if they would have done this after the season or right after the draft it would have been worst.

Is the next QB we take in 2017 going to sit for 2 years too? Say either Petty or Hackenberg light it up (highly unlikely) do they take one of those QB or go in another direction? Yes you have to develop the whole team but its been awhile since a defense won a SB for a team that had lousy QB play (Ravens with Trent Dilfer). Same thing apllies because its just that bad. Sorry not into polising turds. You gotta call it like you see. Until they show otherwise that is the only way to change minds.

Rodgers was DC in title only. Bowles has said as much and that he was turning the D over to Rodgers this season. I can only assume Rodgers was going to get the coffee and Donuts for Defensive meetings.
Your correct about the HC. Bowles had zero association with the Offensive side in the past. He addmitted as much and has vowed to change that. How it works out remains to be seen.
As far as McCown, $6 mill is not starting QB money. $15-24 is starting QB money. Look at the options that were available at the time of his signing. McCown beat out Kessler, I don't remember Kessler prior to McCown so I can comment on that.
Enunwa , ASJ, and Leggette should all be first down targets along with Stewart and Hansen. We have to see who emerges out of all the young Recievers. Peake is another to watch.
Again, it's a rebuild. This tank job talk is nonsense. Your suggesting the team will intentionality try to lose games during the season. That the rebuild is a different thing.
The team is getting young, building from the ground up and it will be a multi year process. The kids will give every effort, the coaching staff will do all it can to win every game they play. Going young may translate to fewer wins and if so, better draft position.
I understand you see the team wasting the 2017 season but it was not a season that was going to result in a playoff run. So using the season to develop the future players, in my opinion makes sense. Cut our losses, bank the cap savings and put together a young and more importantly, a sustainable, competitive team for the future as opposed to trying to go 8-8 this year. And continuing the cycle of mediocrity.
As far as there only being 2 guys on the roster that will compete for the team, that would be more likely last year and more proof the roster had to be blown up . I assume Williams is one of the players, who was your second?
I feel like everyone on this roster is going to give 100 % effort on both sides. The young players were the ones who showed heart last year. Not the vets. The kids are hungry with something to prove.
As far as the release being slimy. Decker could not be released prior to passing his physical. It was no surprise, his wife tweeted about it the day before his physical. Obviously Decker knew it was a very likely possibility. The timing couldn't be any different.
Harris refused a pay cut. He knows he was not performing to the level of pay. He was likely outperformed in OTAs, still refused to restructure and was released. It was his decision to refuse to restructure. He likely wanted out and thinks he will be paid more as a FA. It's a business and every NFL team will be releasing vets between now and week one.

If Hack or Petty light it up then I would expect the Jets to go in a different direction. If they suck and we draft a QB with a top pick, Id expect him to be a day 1 starter, wouldn't you? Next year's QB class looks to have several very good prospects. Better than we have seen in years.
As far as Defense not winning a Super bowl in a while, Denver did it fairly recently in 2015.

Nice post little winded. I'm guessing you haven't been a Jets fan a long time. They have had 49 rebuilds and there were all unsuccessful.

The second guy on defense that can be depended on is Richardson (yes that guy). The issue with him was dumb Bowles playing him at linebacker.

I seriously doubt the tank will be a multi year job. Next year they will scrap it and do something different. Because football players have a limited shelf life in the NFL. Concussions, broken bones, surgeries. Look at how the 49ers had 4-5 prominent players retire in one year

I hope you're right but with the Jets their grand plans never come true. So excuse me for thinking pessimistic. My momma was from Missouri the Show Me State.

Hmmmm Denver defense carried them in that SB game. Ravens defense carried the whole season. P. Manning is a little better than Dilfer.

Good guess, I haven't been a Jet fan that long, I didn't really start watching until 1970. So only 46 years or so.
I can remember lots of retooling. Adding vets to get over the hump but no complete rebuild. Certainly not the 49 you have lived through, but you have been a fan much longer than I.
Again, I believe your using tank in place of rebuild. A legitimate rebuild will take time. Will Woody have the patience to stay the course is the real question.
Because football players have a limited shelf life is exactly why a team must be built through the draft. We have traded picks for vets who are at or past their expiration date, and when the injuries happen, we have no depth to fill the holes created.
I don't have a crystal ball to say if things will work out, if I did I would be at lottery HQ claiming my power Ball prize instead of debating the future of this Franchise.

Denver's D carried them all season. 15-1 Payton was one of the worst QBs in the league in 15.

The good part of this is that we will finally have with some of these young players we've drafted the last few years. If they turn out great, if not.... we lose more games in a draft with potentially 3 good QB prospects. I'd think there have been worse odds for teams that have ended up being successful.

Did you even follow the 2015 NFL season? Because posts like this (below) are alarming.

    You are wrong boozer32.

It wasn't "just the SB game" either.

Denver's defense carried Manning throughout the entire season and it was not the other way around. Not even close.

Manning was done as an NFL QB come 2015. He was washed up and a shell of his former self. Which is why he retired as soon as his Denver defense (carried him) and won him that 2015 ring. Manning instantly retired thereafter. He was beyond finished.

In 2015 Manning only played in 10 games (9 starts). He only had a 59.8% completion percentage (the lowest since dating back to his rookie year of 1998). He threw for only 9 TD's when compared to 17 INT's (horrid). Threw for only 2,249 yards (a career low) and he also finished with another career low and laughing stock joke of a QB Rating of only 67.9 (disaster).

His greatness was gone and his arm was done.

The only thing(s) that were the same about Peyton throughout 2015 was his last name of Manning and his #18 jersey number. And that's about it.

Other than that he was pure trash (2015). NFL QB Bust type of trash too. Stick a fork in him type of trash because he was finished and done as a football player. His body could no longer do things in which his mind wanted to do.

Denver's DEFENSE is what truly carried Manning to his 2nd title.

#1 defense in total yards allowed.
    #1 defense in QB sacks.
#1 D in average yards per play against.
#1 run D in avg yards per carry against.
#4 scoring defense in points allowed.
#4 defense in opposing QB Rating against.
#4 in penalty yards given up.
#5 defense in 1st downs allowed.
#8 in defense in turnovers forced.

    Etc. Etc.

Trent Dilfer actually played better as a QB for Baltimore than Manning did for Denver in 2015 meaning that Denver's defense carried Manning just as much (if not more) than Baltimore's defense carried Dilfer.

It's funny as they both played about half a season each in those Super Bowls .. Dilfer was the better QB stat wise comparing their perspective years.

You have references of something like this ever happening successfully? I can think of the Cowboys as the closet but that was a rape of the Vikings by trading Hershel Walker. But then again they had Jimmie Johnson doing both duties as coach and GM.

You're right you are new to the game of being a Jets fan. I'm sure plenty came onboard in 1970 after the SB win. Did you see any AFL Jets games? This season will be ugly with a capital U. I can live with that if it will get a great QB on our team. But 3 years of this will lose alot of fans and money for Woody. He is the X factor and if he will stay with it. I'm sure people are gassing up the airplane to fly another banner. Only this year there might be multiple banners.
