I don't see anyway Fitz does not resign. Who's going to sign him? Even if someone offered him a contract, I can't see it as a starter. He almost has to resign with the Jets, if he wants to start at QB.
Anyone who thinks Geno is a goner is nuts. He was having a great camp (month with no ints, etc) before he got his jaw busted. The same benefit Petty had watching Fitz, Geno had even more. Geno was the bakcup. Geno was on the field actually watching Ftiz during the game. Geno was in the meetings and as BU, he was in on the game plans. This will be Geno's 4th season, with last season under Fitz's leadership. Geno will have NO trouble dispensing Petty in camp. THIS may be the only reason to cut Geno. Macc don't want a QB controversy, even among the back-ups.
Petty's 1st test will be winning the backup job. If he can't beat out a guy that everyone wants to cut...
Another reason might be that after 3 years here (2 as a starter) the Jets, like a lot of us, don't think he's good enough and draft a QB in April. Being that he's in his 4th season, the Jets will need to decide whether they want to re-sign Geno or give his roster spot to a more promising prospect. I don't know the specifics of Geno's contract but as a 2nd rd. choice, the financial hit to cut him shouldn't be that big.
Cutting Geno this year: dead money 507 K, cap savings 1 m. Might be worth the gamble/cap space/roster spot to cut him now and get rid of a bit more of the Idzik taint.
This is nothing new. You know it yourself. GM's sometimes do say things that reveal info, but they pretty much never are totally upfront. We end up reading the tea leaves.
I don't know about great camp, but your post leaves out the character issues the CS is either definitely concerned about, or incompetent. I don't think they are incompetent. Plus you are a Smith Fan. "dispensing"? Heh! No trouble. Love it.
So you don't think they are incompetent but you think mac named petty the no.2 qb days after the season ended? Thats a bit contradictory don't you think?
What I really think is that he gave up on Smith after the IK incident, and then went on to see Fitzpatrick as the better Qb. Petty at that point was not ready to take over the No. 2. Since then they've seen enough of Petty in developing to think worst case they can enter the coming season with Fitz as the starter and Petty as his backup. Sounds very competent to me.
I agree. I don't see what is incompetent about naming a guy #2 QB who has been on the roster for a year as a rookie. They feel he's ready so what's the issue.
Regardless of what they think about geno, for a g.m. of a team coming off a season such as this one to pound the table and state a 4th rd rookie who never saw any regular season snaps was the back up qb, to me,is reckless at best and would start preparing for the billboard assault. Luckily we don't have a g.m. that did that. We have a g.m. that believes he used a 4th on a guy who's floor is backup qb.
Not only that, but his presence in the locker room represents a losing period. He really should be sent packing. Let him try and put on some nice tape this preseason and then trade him if he shows well. If not, cut bait. I want to see Petty getting QB2 reps. Really looking forward to seeing what he does this summer.
