I totally agree with Prime here. This is exactly what jumped out at me. Say what you will about Holmes, but there seem to be few veteran players around the league as well respected as LT. If he's speaking up like this, it's worrisome.
I love when Schotty apologists bring this up. Going into this season I'm sure the fanbase with half a brain thought that in year three with his QB and tons of weapons, Schotty would open it up a bit and stop being so conservative and predictable. I'm going to assume Rex was under the same assumption. So far, that hasn't happened. If it continues to not happen all season long and Rex STILL bring Schotty back then I'm sure he will start getting some of the blame from the fanbase and media. Being a fan and being a coach are two different things. A fanbase knows what they want and they want it now. A coach tends to let things play out a little longer than they shoud.
Ding ding ding! All you Schotty apologists should start taking it up with the former MVP and former Superbowl MVP rather than other fans pointing out the same thing as them. Go straight to the source.
I can try and guess 70% of the plays correctly (pass or rush). That doesn't mean the OC sucks. It just means that there are some obvious passing situations and some obvious rushing situations, plus a 50% of getting the rest right. To all those that love to bash Schotty for our run game and for tipping his hand on plays, our passing game seems to be working decently this year. Does that mean we are just tipping our running plays? That would make no sense. Every offense has its fair share of predictability. More than one third of Patriots passing plays are with in 5 yards of LoS, yet they have the best passing attack in the league. There really is no one to blame for the Jets run game. Their OL is playing great but thats because we have couple of injuries, plus a below average RT. U can't blame the RT for not making plays. He's just not that good to be making plays. Our center is an undrafted rookie. We can't expect to pound our way to 200 yard rushing days until Mangold and Turner rejoin the team. Every team loves to shit on their OCs and DCs, but if the OL can't run block or pass block, the blame doesn't fall on the OC. Thats just the talent level of the players he has to work with. We continue to call him "cutesy" but then call him predictable as well. When he does something other teams are not predicting, we bash him. When he does something opposing teams predict, we call him predictable. Either way we continue to bash him. If he was terrible, he would have been gone long time ago. GMs and HCs jobs can depend on coordinators.
I don't remember when Holmes called plays. Not saying he didn't, but I guess I must have missed the play caller. But Holmes has a different mentality than Schotty...or any one else for that matter. The opposing teams game planned according to how Schotty calls plays. When Holmes took over the play calling (again, I don't know when), he called plays according to his own mentality. That's what makes them different and defenses had nothing to game plan against.
No, when highly respected offensive players that have been in this league a long time and know the game very well tell the media that the offense is being outsmarted or predictable, there is an issue. This is a straightforward issue. And its nothing new.
Not an apologist. Just not a Hater, and making an observation. I think the Jets have had many weapons before this year, and shockingly enough made it to the Champ Game the last two years in a row with a rookie and then second year Qb who, Schotty Haters refuse to acknowledge, has his issues. I was optimistic, too, but that was partly based on the assumption the OL would not be sucking ass. Well it has. And I think Schotty may have some of the blame for that, but not all. "Being a fan and being a coach are two different things." Absolutely. Fans don't get fired for sticking with bad choices and opinions. Coaches do. So, all the geniuses here, who should go in there as OC instead, particularly now? And please save yourselves from being even more of a laughingstock by not mentioning Callahan. See the above point about the OL. If Schotty goes, the Jets will still have Hunter at RT, Sanchez throwing stupid INT's, Mangold out, Burress AND Mason both still new to the O with very little pre-season, Greene underperforming and STILL putting the ball on the ground, Moore starting to look like he's starting to decline, and an OL bench so thin it is anorexic. Let's face it - if Ryan thought Schotty was half as bad as the Schotty Haters here do, he would have fired him already. The fact is you have an issue with our beloved Head Coach whether you want to admit it or not. Here's another piece of info - Schotty's chances of getting fired this season are pretty much zero.
They are zero, his contract is up. If he's coaching for an extension this season, he's not going to get it.
Who's in charge of getting the offense prepared to execute the gameplan in game situations? Brian Schottenheimer. EDIT: I love how the Brian Schottenheimer Defense Force is in full-form in this thread denying everything, even though players are COMING OUT and saying explicitly that the offensive gameplans are predictable.
That makes no sense. Again, if Schotty was all that bad, his contract would not prevent him from getting fired now. And I know he is finishing the last year of a two year deal. Same thing, if Ryan thought he sucked so bad going into this season, he could have fired him regardless of the contract. Nice crystal ball there, btw. I think it more likely he goes somewhere else or comes back than that he doesn't come back and is out of a job. Did you "know" last year around this time that he would be back this year?
"denying everything" Heh. Hi Liar. No one is denying everything. I just said he probably shares some of the blame for the OL. Of course there's that tricky "some" word in there that you clowns can't seem to acknowledge, just like you don't want to dump on Rex for keeping Schotty around. The LT quote doesn't really mean all that much. A predictable offense is still a good offense if the execution and talent are there. Here's one to consider - when playing the Jets, I predict they will not use plays that my film says Sanchez is not good at.
Schotty will get fired if the offense collapses. It will be an easy call for the Jets in that scenario. The alternative will be to begin looking at Tannenbaum's preparation for this season and Rex Ryan's head coaching ability. Guess who the guy out the door will be if the Jets need to change the conversation in mid season?
Seems to me that too many players are talking to the media. This is not good for the team and will create problems we do not need. Players play and coaches coach. When the players criticize the coaches, it means they are not paying attention to what they should be doing, which is getting it right the first time. Sure Schotty may be predictable but players should not be calling attention to it, that's our job obviously. If they receive that information, share it with the coaches and the team and leave the media out of it. Sounds like trouble brewing to me, especially considering those involved.
I think firing a coordinator into the season is a "break glass in case of emergency" type situation. Sure, the playcalling has been somewhat predictable, but i don't believe the Jets have reached Defcon 5 yet. But I agree with, Mick.....i don't think Schotty is retained after this season. Just my opinion.
I think he's going somewhere else too. I think its more of a last chance kind of deal, rather than firing him and getting someone else in. I wasn't hating on him until LT came out and said what he did. I'm tired of the offensive players, the most veteran players on this team, saying words like "predictable" or phrases such as "weren't prepared" when playing an inferior defense. That's a coaching issue. I've defended schotty in the past, but as of this weekend I've had enough. If your best players are critical, then something is wrong. And I had a feeling he'd be back this year, because there's no reason to fire him last season. He didn't have his best veteran players saying he wasn't prepared or the plays are predictable. These are glaring quotes from respected players that have surface since week 1.
