He did oust Mike Mac... but that was an improvement hopefully. Haven't seen any other issues yet. There is a report him and Williams got into over William's son? Idk of anything outside of that. As a person who doesn't like Gase I would also like enlightenment on this.
Sounds very familiar .... I can’t think of the team off hand ...wait a minute it’s coming to me......it’s the.....uh oh.
If that is the case, then it reinforces the belief from many here that Gase was absolutely the wrong hire and the J&J ownership is absolutely clueless when it comes to selecting the right HC. Firing the best coach on your team to pacify one personal ego is a sign of stupidity and should be the last draw for Gase. JD should fire Gase first. Such a shit move would absolutely destroy any remaining hope for this team.
I said it before & ill say it again..short of Weeb being resurrected or perhaps Bill Walsh..Gregg Williams is the HC i want for this team. rough around the edges? Yes.But he has the piss & vinegar to go along w the chops this team has lacked for decades.
Piss and vinegar definitely gets you on the backpages once you are in a position to show it off. There's no evidence that I have seen that it wins championships. The guy who has won the most in the last two decades started out very quiet and then evolved (devolved?) into a guy who talks but never says anything of value and rarely if ever shows much emotion at pressers other than the occasional disgusted shake of his head when the media says or does something stupid.
But he has a .393 winning percentage as a HC. I believe he's one of those coordinators who isn't cut out to be a HC. He's not alone in that regard, so it's not necessarily a bad thing.
Ever hear of a guy named Vince Lombardi? How about Chuck Noll? Mike Ditka? Bill Parcels? Jon Gruden? Tom Coughlin? Mike Shanihan? Jimmy Johnson? Dick Vermeil?....ok...he was nice...
All guys from a bygone era at this point. Parcells wasn't piss and vinegar though, Parcells was iron fist control. Parcells was louder than Belichik by a lot but there has never been a question of who was large and in charge on their teams once they got control. I kind of think Coughlin is in this category also.
I think the thing they all have in common is that they knew how to assemble good talent, coach it up, and how to win. I don't think you necessarily need to yell and scream to do all those things. OTOH, sitting by yourself on the bench diagramming plays isn't necessarily a winning trait.
Personally I don’t think that personality traits and a winning HC have a damned thing in common. Each winning coach over the years was different and with a different personality. What made them great was discipline, attention to details, football knowledge, ability to develop talent under adverse circumstances and the balls to make players accountable. Williams has shown to me that in spades. I would give GW a chance if things go South with Gase before we embark on another cluster fuck selection approach by the J&J ownership.
I'm not quite ready to hand Williams the keys, but I'd certainly include him on the short list. That said, I don't have anyone off hand that I could say would be better, especially if you factor in the aspect that Williams would already know the team and what the needs are - a big plus.
Good and I hope he sticks around for a long time as our defensive coordinator with Jamal Adams as his ultimate weapon. I can not wait to see a Williams led Gang Green defense teeing off on a Tom Bradyless N.E offense for many of years to come.
This year was probably the best coaching job Williams did since the early 2000s.* Odds are he's going to regress next year. *Maybe he deserves credit for keeping the 2018 Browns together given how the 2019 Browns fell apart. But if so, it was his leadership, not his defense. And given that he isn't the head coach here, his defense is what matters more.
What we need is an Instagram influencer coach who knows how to get the job done in a never-ending series of 15 second videos with haiku captions! A person who can talk to the players of 2020 and sell product and influence fans at the same time. I nominate one of the Kardashians, not the current generation, the one they're grooming to follow in their footsteps. 2039 is the Jets year!!!
