It could be that he's being asked to contain by the coaches, hence no sacks. Look at James Reed last year - loads of penetration achieved by abandoning the gameplan and screwing over his teammates.
    did you watch him play the last few weeks? he RARELY gets double teamed at all! against the dolphins there was a TE that took him out on some running downs. A TIGHT END! this guy is pathetic
No way man. Ellis ill-suited for a 3-4? How? Look at the 3-4 defenses around the league, they consist of bigger, stronger, tougher DEs, not fast, off-the-edge guys like Abe. John Abraham is less suited for a 3-4 defense than Ellis is...by a long shot. When there are 2 interior linemen there is more beef to have to move to make holes, so because 3-4 D's lack that extra guy, they need bigger DEs and DTs to take up blockers and allow LBs to make plays. D-Rob is too small for this, we all know that...but how, because I cannot fathom it, do you think Ellis can't play well in a 3-4? All he did when Abe was here was shore up the left side. He got 10.5 sacks once and that was an anomaly. if you expect that every year, give your head a shake, that's crazy, and not his job...especially in a 3-4..
HAHAHAHAHA!! Wow, I was unaware that belonging to TGG.com meant your posts would be held to such high standards... Is ScotsJet a literary genius? Maybe the poet laureate of TGG? Oh to be a versifier and be held in such high regard....
Erm, pretty sure I said in my post it was just my opinion and that he could write what he wanted. :shit:
Some things to keep in mind with Ellis. Those that say the 3-4 is limiting him should look at his stats from last year. They were miserable. He not only couldn't sack the QB, but he didn't make plays at all last year. So Ellis has been MIA since the Pittsburgh playoff game - 22 games now. That is not a slump. It is reality. Those that say he is double or triple teamed - it simply is not so. It it were true, somebody would be making tackles and getting sacks. It he is triple teamed, that leaves 7 offensive players (remove the three blocking Ellis and the QB) blocking 10 defenders. It's not happening. Ellis can't even shed the one blocker he has been facing. As for Ellis vs. Abraham, I have to eat my words and say that Abrahams injury problems this year prove that he just is not durable enough to be worth big money. However, Ellis is not close to being worth big money either. Letting Abe go may have been the right thing, but it left a big hole in the pass rush. Ellis is getting paid big money to do . . . nothing. Yes he is not injury prone (although last year's season ending injury was suspicious and looked like quitting on the team to me) and "stays on the field", but what good does that do if he doesn't make an impact or even a play when on the field??? I would rather have an injury prone player that, when he plays, is a difference maker (which Abraham was) than a durable player who does nothing (which Ellis is). The bottom line - I like saving the money on Abraham and I want a refund and a mulligan on Ellis. He has been a bust ever since he got the contract.
Abraham would be a horrible 3-4 lineman. He rushes up field, Ellis can occupy two gaps. Ellis has been playing fine, it's our nose and weakside end that need to improve, fast.
There's a big difference between fine and $15 million bonus fine. Ellis has been a below average DE for the past 22 games. Abraham puts up more production in one or two games than Ellis does in a season now. Ellis has shown that he is just not worth anywhere near the money the Jets paid him. Actually Thomas is playing better than Ellis now.
the fact that you tried to think out this entire letter, yet fail to even think of the fact that they are now in a 3-4 scheme with an undersized NT in the middle which puts more double teams and pressure on ellis is insane!!!! how can you expect him to perform as well as he had in years past? he had much better guys on the line with him then, which allowed him to get some one on one time with the tackles. now he has tackles, guards, and tight ends all over him at once. instead of acting like a child with the "why oh why" letter to him, use your head and look at the other players on the field along with him. ellis is a solid d lineman, and i was glad he stayed, strike that.....im still glad he stayed. when the jets get someone to clog the middle and take some of the blocking pressure away from ellis' side im sure you will see his production go back up. the fact that fat ass d-rob is sitting in the middle sloppily playing and only taking on 1 blocker leaving the right side of the line to keep ellis at bay is keeping him from getting the pressure and the sacks. use your head and think...it helps.
abe hasnt been producing at the level that his salary suggests same as ellis. Ellis has this year to perforn abd then its a serious consideration whether he is on our roseter or not
Ellis was invisible again today. He had two tackles while Robertson (who may have played his best game as a Jet) had 6 and Thomas 5. Again, he is a waste of cap space at his huge salary.
Actually, Vilma and Rhodes have been the top tacklers, with Barton and Hobson next. Thomas is just playing better than Ellis period. For $15 million bonus money, I expect a pro-bowl level player, not a below average player, which is what Ellis has been since 2004. Scheme or no scheme, it is still football and defensive players are paid to make plays and Ellis doesn't make any.
Thomas is playing the willie mcginest role as the tweener lb/de. hes allowed to move a little more freely on the field and towards the ball. thats why he has more tackles than ellis. as far as ellis not playing up to his salary...i said it before, hes playing next to suck ass d-rob. the fact that you said he may have had his best game as a jet with 5 tackles proves the guy is shit. ellis has had much better days than d rob could hope for. it also doesnt hurt d rob that hes getting one on one situations as ellis is taking up at least one other blocker from d robs side.
