wow!!! how can any jets fan not be impressed with this team?how can there be any question as to how much BETTER this team is compared to last yr's.first of all, to be completely fair you would have to compare the teams at this moment in time.in other words, last yrs's team pre-draft.there were many questions.how will the o-line jell? what would the run game look like.those questions have all been answered.i fully expect for the jets to have a top 3 offensive line this season.evrything else will take care of itself. Only on a jets board will evrybody talk about the offense next yr and obsess about the weakest position and not mention the other pro-bowl positionS...plural.....lets go over those, shall we.....the entire backfield went to the pro-bowl.....repeat after me...the enire back-field went to the pro-bowl.and deservedly so.the jets were able to run the ball on anybody even after favre was pissin his pants down the stretch.how is that not the first topic of conversation.. lets just say for $hits and giggles the jets decide to draft a running back in the 4th. a big strong rb with speed to add to jones and washington.and pass the ball 12-15 times per game.that's about 4 passes per quarter.maybe 1 or 2 to stretch the field, but mostly those short passes that were so successful with favre..and lets not forget that clemens has a nice deep ball. that along with the continuity we will see from the o-line puts this offense in a much better position than this time last yr..the jets have 1, maybe 2 more pieces to complete this o.
The Jets rushing game was at best mediocre down the stretch when Favre melted down. Not to mention we went empty backfield in so many short yardage situations because in obvious running situations we were getting stuffed at the LOS. We had a lot of big runs last year out of the spread primarily because of defenses fear of Favre. When Favre broke down that fear was reduced substantially and so was our running game. I also suspect NE will be much improved over last year and maybe Miami and Buffalo will be better than last year? The continuity is a great thing however a new QB changes everything and along with continuity Woody and Fanneca are a year older and a year further from their prime. Lets face it how well one of these QB's step up and play and one of our young WR plays is going to play a huge part in whether or not we are better or worse than last year and that is simply unknown.
Until we get a bonafied QB we are worse. With this year's schedule maybe a lot worse. Without a QB that other teams fear they will stack the run and Jones will go back to looking like the back he was in '07.
Wells or Mareno may well be our starting back by the second or third game. Either one of them could be the highest rated player on our board when we pick.
Is it? I like the defensive additions, so this year we may not have a break down towards the later games. The Offense is still a mystery at this moment. Yes, we will run the ball well, but that is unless they don?t fear who's behind center. I will say the schedule is no push over, so I?m expecting them to play controlled football and not put themselves in positions where they?re playing catch up all the time.
Defense should be better, in terms of scheme and players. Offense, alot of questions in the passing game.
I agree the Defense will be better, however I don't think it will be instaneous. I'm guessing around the 4th game they will be solid. I think Offense has the potential to be better than last year. Clemens & Ratliff have had several years in the system. Shotty can now be more creative with his play selection providing his hands aren't tied by Rex, which he may want Shotty to be more conservative. Our running game will be solid. I think it will rest mostly on the Qb's ability to perform.
Hemi .. I agree .. "Should be better" .. Some of your compadres have a yellow jacket on the HC of the NYJ .. It sounds like no one in the NFL will even get 3 points on the Jets ..
I am already ready to change my signature to making us 0-10 under Woody in winning the World Championship & making it 41 years since SB3 since we won the World Championship of FB
I agree with the defensive side of the ball, no key losses, major additions, and a new attacking style defense should make it a first rate defense. Conversely, the offense is in dire need of some re-tooling. It amazes me how people easily write-off the contributions that Coles made and are absolutely positive that the WRs on the roster are equal (or better) replacements. In addition to losing our best WR, we are short blocking TEs, have very limited depth on the OL and have a huge question at QB. The run game will suffer without a legitimate down field threat and without a solid QB and WR, there can not be a down field threat. Also, facing 8 men in the box without a PAIR of solid blocking TEs, will also majorly impact the run game. Defense - great Offense - needs major help or it is doomed
I agree that we need help on the offensive side of the ball, but I think we will address the WR,OL,TE,RB in the draft or free agency.
2006 (4 and 29 pick) - I think the popular call was for D'Brick and Mangold (many called him at 29) 2007 - I think nobody saw it coming when we traded up for Revis and then up in the second round for Harris 2008 (#6 pick) - Everyone was on the Vernon Gholston band wagon; there were many who were also hoping to get McFadden, but everyone called it right when they said that Davis would be all over the kid at #3; BTW, if we recall we beat KC at the end of the year in an absolutely horrendous performance to drop 3 spots in the draft, otherwise McFadden might be here now (not saying everyone would have been happy about this either). 2009 (#17) IMO, almost anyone's call is valid. I just think that there are so many more options when you are lower in the draft order provided that the draft class is strong at your positions of interest. In this case, the QB class in not strong. For this reason, I really think the acquisiton of Sanchez will largely loom for how much the Jets value him and how far he drops. Otherwise, I think we will address the WR or RB position in round one.
I think there were some of us who wanted to try and trade down for Cutler in 06, I think Mangold was pretty universal. I'm pretty sure Cakes was a big believer in trying to trade up ahead of Atlanta last year to grab Ryan. I think there was a lot of support for McFadden and some for Gholston but a lot of people wanted to trade down last year and avoid Gholston.
I still think Gholston will be better then McFadden. Gholston had to learn a whole new position whats Mcfadden's excuse for sucking.
At this point the over-under for next year is 7 wins, and I think as usual I am being too optimistic in that projection. The Jets still have chances to turn this into a good offseason however they've underperformed dramatically in that regard so far. Bringing in Scott, Sheppard and Leonhard doesn't improve the defense at all over what we had last season. The only thing they bring that we didn't have with the incumbents is "new". New is a lousy commodity to add to the mix and expect better to come out of it.
I wish they didn't... you're right in believing that most people think this defense will rise to elite status overnight with Ryan being here.. the fact is when the Jets aren't holding teams to 13 pts a game the threads about Ryan not being efficient and same old Jets will come out of the woodwork. the football fan.
