Sorry to say but as much as I think Chad is toast, we aren't getting an answer to is Clemens the future of the franchise. I think we have gotten the worst possible scenario, Clemens who may be our future has been put in a spot where his future can't be helped or really answered. If anything what Clemens is proving is we don't have a real answer at QB and probably have to draft another one this year. It's all part of being a Jets fan we got screwed both ways. Chad was a step backwards and Clemens has been at best a shuffle sideways, kind of like doing the Cha Cha.
Wiston, this thread title was not as Wiston-esque as many others, but in light of what its message is, it would make the most sense to start Tui over all others.
Sorry Winston....this is not one of your best threads...I think history has taught us, if we didn't already know, that in order to succeed, you must fail. This is a learning experience for Clemens, as painful as it is to watch. What else did you expect....here are your examples... Peyton Manning (1998) G CMP ATT PCT YDS TD INT RATING 16 326 575 56.7 3739 26 28 71.2 Carson Palmer (2004) 13 263 432 60.9 2897 18 18 77.3 Drew Brees (2003) 11 205 356 57.6 2108 11 15 67.5 Brett Favre (1993) 16 318 522 60.9 3303 19 24 72.2 taking Clemens out would be a huge step back...Why back out now?
I wouldn't say Clemens' future can't be helped, all this playing time is going to help him. He's looked good at times, so I wouldn't write him off after six games, but I don't know that I'd commit all of next season to get him more practice, either. That's what this year turned out to be for. To be the best football team we can be, either get the next great QB which we probably can't and won't do, or keep the guys we have and hope one of them can get the job done. One has shown he can do it, the other has shown he can possibly do it, so you take your chances with your guys. That's life.
I'm not a Brees fan and I'm not particularly concerned about INT's for a young QB. Outside of the end of the Baltimore game, Clemens hasn't shown any of the gunslinging ability that Palmer, Favre or Manning showed in their first year playing.
A large portion of this must rest on the shoulders of the poor play by the offensive and defensive lines. This year I chalk up to a large wake up call. We find out this off-season if the CS and FO got the message.
I'm concerned about INTs for any QB, you usually either throw a lot of them or you don't. Guys like Favre and Vinny have been playing for 20 years and they still throw bad picks, sometimes because they have too much confidence in their arms. We can't block this year, which caused Chad to throw them when he doesn't usually, so we'll see. A couple of Clemens' have been Hail Marys, too, but some have been killers.
That INT yesterday was bush league. The guy had 2 guys all over him and Clemens had no clue what to do. He is lost ovut there.
But you just said if you surround Kellen with better players he will succeed. So you admit the team around Kellen is bad, but yet when Chad was in there, the team was good? Is that your logic? One of the criticisms about Chad was that he needed a good team around him to succeed, but now I see the same arguments being made for Kellen.
Chad had a HOF running back an great defense and a O-line anchored by Kevin Mawae! Chad had the surrounding pieces to succeed when he came in. Chad can not throw anymore what is so hard to understand about that. He knew the offense we ran, Knew the right calls to make and still stunk! He is finished. Period let it go.
I would take Vinny and Farve over Chad anyday. 17-20 for 140 yards is not a good day. Clemens has the potential to put up numbers. At least give him a full year the way any Qb that played in a normal city would get!
That's the case for any QB, Peyton Manning included. People here have also noticed that we can't run, block or play defense since Clemens came in. Previously it was Chad all by himself costing us games. Now there are other reasons. Imagine that. Talk about twisting a statement around, way to go. They are different types of QBs, Vinny and Favre have the physical tools but need the right coaching. When Favre played for Holmgren and Vinny was here with Parcells/Weis/Henning, they were as good as good gets. Chad is a different kind of QB--a lot more accurate, a coach on the field, but not nearly as durable or strong an arm. There is more than one way to play the position, as long as you win.
Next season there will be improvement because we will play a weak schedule, but how much of it will be real progress and not a function of the weak schedule... FOURTHANDLONG will making it rain when we get 4-6 wins while CP and the Ravens are 11-5.
As bad as Chad had played I still can't believe your sitting here even discussing him. Do you not realize that the Pennington era is over?
