Funny how Eric Smith is on an NFL roster right now and Leonhard is still looking. Hopefully he comes back.
FS depth Transitional year for safety position Vet minimum Defensive QB that knows the system He's our "Rudy" Rex's guy $800k is well worth it. I say bring him back.
=( Guess not at the moment. http://espn.go.com/newyork/conversa...k-jets-bring-back-veteran-safety-jim-leonhard
Couple of posters have mentioned this year being a "transitional year" for safeties. How so? We don't have a safety signed beyond 2012 except Eric Smith. Wouldn't 2013 also be a transitional year in that case? It would have been a transitional year if we had safeties signed beyond 2012, where Leonhard would come in, transition the new safeties into the system and the let them be on their own the following year. Bell won't be back in 2013. He'll be 35 by then. And Landry is out on a prove-it deal. If Landry can prove he can still play good, he'll get a nice contract elsewhere. Jets wouldn't be able to afford him. If he doesn't prove himself, well, he shouldn't be here in 2013 anyways then. So in 2013, I think we'll have a whole new set of safeties.
As per ROTOWORLD The Jets will not be re-signing free agent S Jim Leonhard before training camp. Leonhard, coming off a right patella tendon tear, recently declared himself healthy enough to work out for teams. League sources tell Jets beat writer Rich Cimini that Leonhard won't be resurfacing with New York, though. The 29-year-old Leonhard could make sense for a team like the Colts or Cowboys. He knows the basic terminology of both of those defenses.
I feel bad for Jim, but you really couldn't ask the Jets to put stock in a guy coming off two bigtime leg injuries.
Unfortunately injuries are part of the game, and the twice injured Leonhard should not fit into the Jets' plans. Good luck, Jim. I was a fan when he was with the Jets.
Im no huge eric smith fan but he is a good reserve he shouldnt of been a starter but he stepped up and did what he could...bell and laundry will be good and smith will fill the back up roll nicely...Leonhard would be a reserve here to if he came back so he will go elsewhere.
Players like Eric Smith would be fine, if players like Gronkowski didn't exist, but they do, and thus, he's overmatched and we're screwed.
That's a shame, Jim always exuded a ton of heart and smarts to make up for his size. I wish him the best of luck.
i dont see it, but doesnt mean it wont happen....sometimes i think they go there to stick it to us for not bringing them back...
