I like Leon. I think he's an awesome 1A at HB at one of, if not the best returners in the NFL. I just don't think he's worth 6+ million a year. If he requests that type of contract, I say trade him. If he's happy at 4mil a year or so, by all means keep him.
I think you'd be surprised. He's only going to get what the market commands for him. If no other team pays more for him, why should the Jets?
yeah I would be surprised considering the norm for what he's done on the field commands a 1st and a 3rd, like every other very good to great player in the NFL. Unless its Emmit Smith, no one is paying 2 1st rounders. My point was by tagging him, that has raised the price per year the Jets would be paying if they just went ahead and resigned him without the charade of seeing what he is worth.
the thing is he's not a 1200 yd back, not up to now, anyway... i think your selling sproles short here. he's been just as valuable and dangerous to the charger's as washington has been to the jets. their rolls are basically the same!! neither are every down backs. both are too small and sproles is much thicker than washington, but still not an every down back. the roll they each play for their respective teams is the ideal situation for them. the main problem with backs this small is they're an injury due to happen at any time(same can be said of all players, but more so the smaller one). face it, one knee/ankle injury and they are never the same back again. too dangerous to pay huge money with a salary cap. one injury, and the cap takes a major hit...
Open the check book... Tanny will get it done. I have a feeling this contract will be based on incentives.
He's more than just a RB. He catches the ball, sets up field position and also is a RB. He can change a game any number of ways, on a kick return, a screen pass, a run from scrimmage, he's a superior ball carrier, one of the great runners in the NFL. You just don't let go of a guy like that.
Neither was Michael Turner before last season. Didn't stop the Falcons from paying him nearly $6 million per. Sproles, in 4 seasons, has the following numbers: 106 Carries, 544 yards, 5.1 YPC, 3 TDs 42 Rec, 383 yards, 5 TDs 64 PR, 586 yds, 1 TD 153 KR, 3912 Yds (25.6 avg), 2 TD Leon, in 3 seasons, has the following numbers: 298 Carries, 1451 yards, 4.9 YPC (and improving every season), 13 TDs 108 Rec, 838 yards, 2 TDs 62 PR, 583 yds, 0 TD 101 KR, 2601 Yds (25.8 avg), 4 TD Their return numbers are similar (although Leon is more of a threat to break one), but I really don't see how you can compare their value as backs, especially when you consider that Sproles received many more carries in the RZ this season than Leon. In 3 seasons, Leon has established himself as more valuable. And if there's no cap next season?
when a player states he's revolutionizing the game, that spells out to "ELITE MONEY". it sounds like he's looking for more than 5 mill.....
He said he's 'trying to revolutionize the game' and what I take from that is that he believes in his ample abilities. I do, too. He deserves a nice payday as good as he is. It's not his fault that Mangini and Schotty buried him at the end of 2008. I don't think he'll get 5+ mill per year from any team at this point, so I don't know why this is even part of the argument.
i think there is a difference with what Leon is trying to set out to do and how much money he is actually worth.
but just for how long is he going to be worth 8 mill a season?? have to be the best in the league every season for that cake!!!!!!
You do realize that the average salary at every position escalates each season, right? Especially if next season is uncapped.
doubt it. players try to avoid contracts based on incentives at all costs. players want guaranteed cake. not maybe.....
