Those that are saying he's not worth the money aren't looking at the big picture. He is our NUMBER 1 Playmaker period. Whether it's on offense or on special teams. Whether it's him running the ball or catching the ball out of the backfield. You take him off the team and we don't have one single game breaking player. He is well worth the money.
Leon will surely see a significant raise in pay, because he deserves it. I'm not worried about Tanny breaking the bank for this guy....he's smarter than that.
+1 You don't just throw away playmakers of Leon's caliber. Think the offense is hurting now? Wait until Leon is gone...
I can't believe that people actually think that Leon asking for a big contract is unreasonable. This guy has so much talent, the jets are just under utilizing him. If he leaves next year for another team seeing him become a star elsewhere will just eat at me. Keep in mind he has played out a rookie contract w/o asking for an extension until now. Personally, I think he has far outperformed his rookie contract. He's been a team 1st guy and done everything the organization has asked of him. Why are we so willing to overpay for FA's like Pace and Scott and not Leon...we know what Neon can do in Green & White and all he needs are more opportunities. How about we pay for guys who actually played in our uniform for a change....Letting Leon go would be a horrible decision. He deserves a good contract. Saving $$$ means nothing to me. I want wins and Leon is an important part of the winning formula for me since we are committed to being a run first team.
He was the first true gamebreaker threat. He was a kick return legend. At any time when he touched the ball he could score at any spot on the field. Its really too bad he had those severe knee injuries.
at some points over the last two years this guy has been our only source of offensive firepower. i say pay the man.
I used to feel bad for you when the guys on this board would start shit with you but now I see why you dont know what you are talking about. Leon is hands down the best player on the Jets it is not even close. The Jets need to sign him at all cost he is what Reggie Bush was supposed to be. Leon comes to the off season work outs while Jones who is 31 & at the end of his rope does not come even thou he has 2 years left on his deal. Leons work is from speed & moves Jones is a product of the O line. We need to get Jones replacement & lock up Leon long term.
Also Jones talks about Favre to the media (not a team player) than doesnt show up for workouts I wouldnt give him a penny just like Coles I would tell him to take a walk. If he doesnt like the $20 mil we gave him over the last 4 years tuff shit you signed the contract honor it. If we could get Moreno or Brown I would do it in a heart beat.
comparison of Brian westbrook and Leon Washington stats thru their first 3 seasons: Rushing Yards/TDs: Westbrook –1,618/10, Washington — 1,451/13. Catches/Receiving Yards/Touchdowns: Westbrook — 119/1,121/10, Washington 108/838/2. Punt return yards/TDs: Westbrook — 380/2, Washington 583/2. Kickoff return yards/TDs: Westbrook — 487/0, Washington 2,601/4. http://www.thejetsblog.com/2009/03/26/leaving-gang-green/
Leon should get his money. He has performed on par with Sproles and to be honest he deserves it. He has won many games by himself for this franchise and he deserves to be paid on par with his counterparts. He is the most explosive weapon on this team in years and can help in many ways. Guys like that are hard to find and his attitude and work ethic plus his age is everything we should all want in a Ny Jet. He is one I would rather overpay for. A replacement for Jones should be gotten in this or next years draft. 31 yr old Rb's are on borrowed time.
He didn't really revolutionize the game as much as do the same things everyone else was doing much better. I have a DVD of him and the Golden Boy sitting down watching his film together. It's like a half hour long and it makes you realize Sayers is a lil full of himself, but a half hour of highlights, stone cold jaw droppers, and over five or six year span, it was unbelievable. As for LEON. Sproles ain't too bad. I think he believes himself to be a triple threat too, but I will grant that Leon can run between the tackles better. Still, he's not a 20 carry, hang your hat on me RB. He's a long term lockup with a signing bonus that says we take care of our own. (6 yrs, 25 mill, 10 in the first two years)
Here is my nightmare: Leon asks for a little too much, Tanny lets him walk and the Patriots sign him. And he haunts us forever. This guy is too valuable with the right CS.
Leon will be asking for a minimum of 36 Mil over six or at least 6 to 6.6 a year. There is no way he will take this contract. If we don't pay him somebody else will and we will regret it.
Exactly. That's why I've been so vocal about re-signing him before the season starts. There are several people here, Jets and Boys probably the most vocal, who have suggested that we wait until after the season. Our new CS has stated many times, however, that they intend to increase his role in the offense. The worst thing that could happen would be for Leon to have his career year with his contract expiring and that we have predefined notions of his "worth". He's worth $5 million a year. Westbrook received that 4 years ago, and contracts escalate every single offseason. I fully expect Leon to develop into that kind of back when given the opportunity. As TJ ages, their carries will start to shift this season, and likely be swapped next season if we haven't found a TJ replacement and haven't foolishly let Leon walk.
I definitely think I've seen enough of Leon to say that he has what it takes to be a premier back. I still like the idea of a basher like Hillis to come in and beat up the opposing LBs to change the pace, then back to mercilessly quick LW. That would be so much fun to watch. But we really need a good blocking TE and a longer-term replacement at FB, TRich is not going to be around much longer.
I agree. I'm shocked that Denver has vocally been willing to trade Hillis after one season. Apparently McDaniels is determined to hate everything Shanahan liked?
The problem is Leon will be compared to Sproles. If Sproles was Franchised at 6.6 a year Leon will be asking for something comparable. I strongly suggest we sign him now before we have to really take a hit or watch him walk later.
