No, you have to be kidding me. John Randle is the best pass rushing defensive tackle of all-time. He deserves to be in the HOF.
Brown was waaay ahead of his time and despite archaic rules at the time, still put up amazing numbers. But (IMO) Payton wins out for me because he did play the game that we know now. Had Brown played at Paytons time, we might not be having this debate.
I was thinking the same thing man. To me, the two best offensive players ever are Jerry Rice and Barry Sanders.
I would call the era that Payton played in modern style football, whereas Browns days were played in black and white. Just kidding :drunk: No, its hard to explain as it my own slant. When Brown was playing, although it was still the NFL etc... the game wasn't the 'finished' article it is today, and I think the players are now alot bigger, stronger, faster etc... and mostly alot more professional, without taking anything away from the old timers. Hope that explains a bit, buy you a drink and talk about it for hours sometime
I think Sanders is one of the most over rated RB's of all time. Yes, he's a HoFer, but he was a drive killer. He got tackled for losses so often, it was ridiculous, but they had to keep feeding him the ball because eventually he would break off a long run just to get tackled at the five yard line. That one long run every game padded his stats. He always got pulled at the goal line. He was exciting to watch, but he wasn't as good as Gale Sayers in that respect. Sanders was one dimensional, but in that one dimension, he was very good. He was almost as elusive as Sayers, but Sayers was faster, ran with more power when he had to and was a better reciever. I'd take OJ the killer over Sanders, along with a bunch of other RB's. Sanders couldn't move the chains, he often killed drives. He could explode on any play, but he caused far too many 3 and outs for my taste.
(and in the Payton corner) Walter could do it all, run, catch, pass and block. His moves were just ridiculous good. Can't remember who said it (Andre Tippett??) but he said that with Payton you didn't know if we was going to go around you or through you. With you on Sayers :up:
Jim Brown could play today and be just as good. He was 6'2 230 could run with power and had great speed. He was great at catching the ball out of the backfield. Absolutely no argument there, Brown plays today, he still puts up impressive numbers. Switch Brown with Payton's Eras, and my choice would most likely be reversed. Yeah, dying to come over and tailgate with you guys (gals?)
