if the wr corps is good enough that clowney and woodhead need to be cut, wouldn't that be good? if curtis gets hurt and the jets cut him, i would bet that clowney, woodhead, or someone at least as productive as they are would be available to sign as the 5th wr.
I'll admit, losing Woodhead/Clowney is a weak argument. That wasn't my point and I phrased it poorly. One of the two is likely to get cut if we draft a WR. I'm very much in favor of that. The other is likely to get cut if we bring in a free agent. Again, not a problem. However, I do have a problem with bringing in a guy who is as likely to get injured again as anyone in the NFL. 5th receiver or no, I'd rather not have the position in flux. My preferred approach would be to draft a slot receiver and seek out a younger, healthier FA for that 5th receiver spot, preferably someone who can contribute on STs. That last point brings me to... ...Aundrae Allison. The guy is sitting around after we put him on IR last season, hasn't shown much as a WR but contributes on ST. I'd rather have a 5th receiver who contributes on STs than an aging guy we're just going to have to cut anyway. That's how Wallace Wright stayed on the roster (I still wish we hadn't let him go). Our 5th guy isn't going to see the field often as a receiver unless he's pressed into duty. Clowney was something of an unnecessary roster spot last season until injuries forced him onto the field. Woodhead only merited a spot on the active roster because of the injury to Leon. I don't think we save the room for them this season, although I could see one sticking around.
