He's getting paid $2.6 million, 49th highest paid WR in the league per: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/49112/jets-offseason-preview-wide-receivers 64 starting WRs in the NFL, I don't' consider Kerley to be an average #2 with his production, but with a better QB and passing game, he probably could be an above average #2. He is great at separating. With that being said, you don't cut one of our only WRs that can get consistent separation and has great hands. Especially for only $200k in cap savings when we have tons of cap room.
how many guys behind him in salary still on there first contract? he's not paid like a top receiver he's paid like a good reciever, which he is. unless we have a cheaper replacement there's zero point in getting rid of him when we have a ton of cap space.
He doesn't look all that good at getting separation at this point. He was pretty good at it when Santonio Holmes was on the other side of the field and healthy but that's because the quicker inside defender was almost always on Holmes. Now that guy goes on Kerley and he doesn't seem to be open as much as he was. He has had injury issues the last two years and that might be the reason he's slowed down some.
I'm not sure what happened to Kerley this year--he seemed to disappear for long stretches of games and really for most of the season. It's as if he wasn't there most of the time. I wasn't sure I was remembering correctly so I just looked him up, he had between 0-2 catches in 10 of the 16 games. And only one touch down? But most surprising were the number of seemingly easy drops. For a guy that was so tough and would catch balls in traffic, to see him drop easy wide open throws was very disheartening. It looked like at times he didn't even want to be there. I still really like the player but something was wrong last year. _
