I don't know man. I really do think it is a numbers thing, along with him being a rookie. It's not like he is a ST player like some other depth guys. I don't think it means he is awful at his job. That theory of yours might apply to some players, but I do not feel this is a result of him being horrible.
He's listed on the depth chart as the backup NT. What happens to the Jets if Pouha goes down and he's not dressed for the game? I know Ryan likes to go heavy on DB's and all but if Ellis was a player wouldn't he have dressed against Jacksonville where the only real worry for the Jets was MJD?
We would still have, Dixon. Him and Ropoti have been the depth players for that DL this whole season so far. I'm assuming with BT out, we will be seeing a lot my 4-3/46 base looks, so it would not surprise me to see Ellis playing next week.
Right, and I thought I read somewhere (though this could all be in my mind) that Dixon edges him out because he assists on ST. I could be way the fuck off on that though.
Dixon is really the back-up NT for Pouha. The active Dlineman are Pouha, Dixon, Devito, Westerman and Pitoitua. That is 5 lineman. They are not, not activating him because he sucks! It's a numbers game at this point. I don't see how anyone can complain about them redshirting Ellis at this point. He is from a small school with a ton of talent but is a little light on proper technique.. I am saying it now and saying it again, there are tons and tons of examples of top DT's that started their careers redshirted or warming the bench.
Right on the money. Even good DLmen often start very slowly. While Wilfolk and Ty Warren both played a lot their rookie year's they both started slowly and really didn't become the impact guys that they became until their 2nd year. Richard Seymour is the only Rookie DLman I can recall who made an immediate and consistent impact on the DL as a rookie for the Pats. Consistency is the big issue with young DLmen
I'm definitely not complaining, just anxious to see him. But your points make a lot of sense (especially your earlier point about him not seeing the field this week against the Pats)
Nah it wasn't directed towards you, just the "he is a bust" or "he has got to suck" crowd because he isn't playing right away.
The same crowds who considered Wilson a bust after one season. Doesn't look so much like a bust now though!
Wouldn't make much sense to have him active for the Pats game.. but I think coming up we will start to see more of him with Thomas out. The fact is that Dixon and Pitoitua are both playing very well as backup linemen. There are very limited situations for Ellis to get in there as of now. He's a rookie 3rd round pick from a small college.. if he doesn't get on the field all season there could be some cause for concern, sure. But he's another guy who was drafted with year 2 and beyond in mind. I think that's been a problem with the Jets drafts lately though. We rarely get anything out of players in year 1 the past 2 years, and in 09 we only had 3 players. Over the past 2 years, Wilkerson is really the only guy who has stepped in and made an impact in year 1. But we were spoiled the past few years before that getting major impact players from day 1, I suppose.
Wilson dressed for all 16 games last year and saw play in all of them. By definition if he's playing then the coaching staff sees enough in him to put him on the field. The guys who practice but keep being inactive on Sunday are the busts in waiting.
Exactly. Just like Ducasse. Kenrick Ellis needs time to learn the pro game. Just like Ducasse, he's coming from a small school where "I'm huge" was all you needed to be successful. He's got to learn technique and he most likely needs a good off-season strength and conditioning program before he's good enough to take somebody's job. That doesn't mean he's a bust. You got Pouha, Wilk and Devito, then Rex's sweethearts Ropati and Dixon. That's essentially five defensive tackles dressing right there. You can't dress a sixth- somebody needs to rush the passer off the edge and we don't really know who that is yet, so we gotta dress Pace and Thomas and Maybin and Westerman, all of whom can play snaps with their hand in the dirt.
Again, I disagree. Ducasse is constantly on the active roster. Yet, he by definition, is absolutely garbage from what we have all seen so far. Yet, he is activated. Why? It's not because he is good, it is because of the possibility of the absolute worst case scenario playing out along our OL. Losing our starters to injury. He is close to the only depth we have on that line. Unfortunately. Wilson was afforded to be activated because of Rex's man boner for DB's. You will always see more DB's active then any other position on this team. We all know that is Rex's niche'. I don't think if you are inactive, that means you are on the verge of the bust label. That doesn't really make sense to me.
No one remembers how raw this kid was coming out of college? I thought he was going to be a 2nd half player and that's what the CS is doing. He's being saved for when the DL is wearing down. He's not going to wow anyone this year. It could happen, but its doubtful. He's got a long way to go.
He's a rookie who is slated behind a number of serviceable defensive linemen. He's not going to impactful this week or next week, but from all accounts he is growing and learning as a player.
He really doesn't have to be impactful in terms of individual stats - all he needs to do is take up bodies on the line to make room for other blitzers.
