It's amazing how everyone discounts the Jets off season and that we are just the same team as last year without Braylon. Sure, we only kept most of our guys we you've got two classes of draft picks that are developing. We added two large talented defensive lineman. Wilkerson is a freak of an athlete and Ellis probably would have been a first round pick if not for defending him and his girlfriend at a bar. Bilal, Kerley and the Mcknights all bring something to the table as skill players. They just need to be coached and developed within the offense. I expect Kyle Wilson to be a totally different player this year. I don't know what the Jets were thinking by having him cover Boldin/Mason one on one in his first NFL Game with little to no help. They set him up to either sink or swim and his confidence was destroyed. Honestly, if Rex Ryans first defensive draft pick is a cornerback in the first round and he doesn't become a very good NFL player, I would be shocked. I don't know what the Jets have planned for Vlad but missing the entire off season can't be a good thing. Hunter did a great job after Woody got hurt. The terminator will be playing FB/special teams here for a long time. So it's not just oh we kept our guys and lost Braylon/Brad Smith. The Jets have two solid draft classes just waiting to contribute.
Exactly. If our picks pan out, we're a MUCH better team than last year. We only have one starter remaining on each side of the ball who's truly "aging". The others are either gone or pushed into backup roles. We have depth at several positions at which that was lacking last season.
Obviously it's not squarely on his shoulders, but I see his point.. if Gholston was as good as the #6 pick is supposed to be, and provided us with a top end pass rusher, things would have been much easier the past 2 years and we'd have been much more likely to win one of those championship games.
eh, the real reasons for the two AFCCG losses were losing CB depth and Greene against the Colts, and the fact that no one showed up for 30 minutes in the 1st half against the Steelers. I don't think a productive, top tier pass rusher would have solved either issue, but it would alter the dynamic of matchups and the game themselves. When the Jets put 60 minutes of ball together, they are the best team in the league.
CBs wouldn't be tasked as such if Gholston played to the calibre you expect of a passrusher taken #6 overall. If the Jets had that monster coming off the corner on passing downs the secondary wouldn't be forced to cover for so long. There is only so much you can expect from second and third-rate DBs. The defensive line was a part of this as well especially with Jenkins absence but I expect some improvement there this year. Pouha and DeVito have been great stepping into that role but they do not provide much pressure.
Manning would have toasted them anyway. Once Strick and Lito went down that was it. And the running game stalled with Greene out. The offense couldn't do shit either.
Fine, then the FO's choice to select him contributed to the losses. He didn't cost us the Superbowl because he wasn't who we thought he was. The front office made the mistake of selecting him.
Any word on Ellis practicing this week? I would LOVE for him to play this game and be the ONLY Ellis grabbing headlines!
If he wasn't activated for the Ravens, I don't think he will be for the Pats. I would imagine they are going to have a couple of extra DB's for this game as is Rex's mo against pass happy teams. Maybe next week against the fins, who I would imagine be much more run oriented now their franchise QB is lost to an season ending injury.
My rule of thumb on Ryan talking up his players is that if they're not on the field the odds are they blow chunks. Being on the field is what tells you if a player is any good. If injuries or off-field stuff is keeping them off then you take that into account but if they're not playing there's a reason for that and it generally means they suck. I hope Ellis turns out to be something but not getting on the field in the first 4 games when his unit is dominated by solid journeymen is pretty damning evidence against him at this point.
Ellis seems like another project player IMO. He had a good preseason but if I remember correctly he's a bit weak (22 bench reps approx) to be the nosetackle in Ryan's scheme right now. Good news is that he has a big frame and its very possible he can get stronger. He's shown that he is far the better player than a project/bust guy such as Ducasse right now.
Ellis looked really good in the preseason, they have mentioned that he has trouble keeping his pad height down. He could actually help out alot in this game if he can get any sort of penetration and stop brady from stepping up into the pocket. Never the less with the loss of BT, I think we switch to a 4 man front on the majority of our D-snaps, and if you watch the game film the jets are much better of generating pressure with a 4 man front, and they dont have to use up a DB as a blitzer.
