Here's an article on Vilma 3-4 in today's Star-Ledger: http://www.nj.com/sports/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1166161738211060.xml&coll=1 Friday, December 15, 2006 BY DAVE HUTCHINSON Star-Ledger Staff HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. Following last Sunday's 31-13 loss to Buffalo, Bills left tackle Jason Peters echoed the sentiments of the media by saying Jets inside linebacker Jonathan Vilma and the 3-4 defensive scheme are a bad marriage. Vilma, who has struggled making the adjustment from the 4-3, was credited with just one tackle against the Bills. "I got up on him a couple of times," Peters told Jets Confidential The Magazine. "He doesn't like it when somebody gets up on him and blocks him. He's more of a sideline-to-sideline, fill-the-gap type of guy. He's more of a 4-3 guy. The 3-4, I don't know. It's going to be hard for him to make plays in the 3-4." "That's fine if he thinks that," Vilma said yesterday. "The coaches say I'm playing well in it (the 3-4 defense). I think I'm doing fine in it. I'm not really worried about what he thinks. So, cool, I guess. To each his own." Peters, at 6-4, 340 pounds, outweighs Vilma by at least 110 pounds. Vilma disputes the fact he only had one tackle. Buffalo rushed for 174 yards on 34 carries. "I had more tackles than that," said Vilma, who has 97 tackles, no sacks, one fumble recovery and an interception this season. "I played a good game. I graded out well. Coach said I played well. So I'm fine." K Mike Nugent, who has hit a career-best nine straight field goals and 14 of his past 15, including a career-best 54-yarder, has rebounded nicely after a slow start. Nugent, a second-round pick (47th overall) in 2005, started his streak after missing an extra point and two field goals (30 and 34 yards) in the opener vs. the Titans. Since then, he only has missed a 52-yarder against the Browns in Week 8. "I'm just thinking that this shouldn't start halfway through the season," Nugent said. "What I need to focus on now is do what I can to keep it consistent throughout the rest of this season." Nugent said he has had rough starts in his first two seasons (his first career attempt was blocked in Kansas City last season) and his goal is to start fast next season. Rookie free-agent WR Wallace Wright was a walk-on at North Carolina, where he started only one game (on Senior Day) and finished with just 23 career receptions for 312 yards and four touchdowns in four seasons. He was an undrafted free agent who wasn't even signed after the draft. He was invited to Jets training camp only after a tryout. Yet he has played in the past two games on special teams after spending the first 11 games on the practice squad. He had a tackle against the Bills. "I think about (how far I've come) sometimes, but I'd much rather think about where I'm going," he said. "I'm fortunate that I was in the right place at the right time. I feel this is the first time I'm getting the opportunity to really be the player I'm capable of being." The Jets will be facing Vikings CB Antoine Winfield for the first time since he backed out of a verbal agreement with the club as an unrestricted free agent at the start of free agency in March 2004. Winfield reneged on the deal late on the first evening of free agency, was picked up from Long Island by the Vikings on a private jet in the wee hours and signed with Minnesota the next day. He had agreed in principle on a six-year, $30 million deal that included a $10 million signing bonus with the Jets. Minnesota offered a six-year, $36 million package with $10.8 million to sign. Word is Winfield's wife didn't like New York. A solid cover corner, he has four interceptions (tied for the team lead) and 50 tackles (third on the team) this season. QB Chad Pennington, a Marshall product, saw a screening of the new movie "We are Marshall" and gave it two thumbs up. The film is about how the school's football program was reborn following a 1970 plane crash. RB Cedric Houston worked with the first team in practice yesterday, while rookie QB Kellen Clemens practiced with the second team for the second week in a row.
Staying positive is one thing but I'm not really crazy about him saying he played a good game when the defense got smacked around like they did.
Yes in MHO without a dominant D a SB championship will remain out of our reach. As an example Woody is now completing 7 years as our owner & in all those 7 years at least in MHO we NEVER had the dominant D to get that elusive SB win
Champ, You are looking at the wrong post. Here is what you said. You and everyone else can click the link to see that I *did not* edit anything that changed what you meant from your post. The only thing I cut from your words in post 27 in this thread is the part about "your goal is not to win the SB", which is irrelevant to what you said about SBs and MLBs: http://forums.theganggreen.com/showpost.php?p=385649&postcount=27 So, do you stand by your own post or not? Do you need a DOMINANT MLB to win a SB? I say no. TBTF
OK & I say yes so you go down your track & I will go down mine. Bear in mind Woody has own the team 7 years when this season ends & in those 7 years we have never had a dominant D & neither have we won a SB championship
7 years as an owner isn't that long. Especially when you consider all the drama with Parcells/Belicheck at the beginning and then the poor hiring of Herm. He's basically on his 2nd head coach and he seems much more into the team than in years past.
Four of the first six years were winning seasons, three were playoff seasons, and this year still has a chance to be both. Not too shabby.
Well this post proves that IF we would have a DOMINANT D we would have won in one of Herms PO years. You guys seem to fall in love with players without realizing that the most important thing is strenghting the team NO MATTER who the player is & who will be a upgarde over the present player in that position. Certainly you would not argue a more DOMINANT MLBer then JV would IMPROVE the team.
Yes you can but when you say have a J. Ogden on your OLine or LT as your RB it becomes much harder to do. In JV case it is very obvious at least to me that we MUST improve his position in the upcoming off season
The 2004 defense wasn't dominant, but it was 7th in yardage and Top 5 in point allowed. And in the playoffs they only gave up 14 to San Diego and 17 to Pittsburgh. But it wasn't dominant... And the Jets will never win without a dominant defense...Well, Mangini has only had 1 offseason and 1 draft, give it SOME time.
We won NOTHING so I guess you can say we were not DOMINANT enough if that make you happier. The fact is we are 0-6 so far in Woodys ownership in winning a championship no matter if you like hearing that or not. Yes Man has only 1 year under his belt & hopefully we will upgrade the MLB position in this coming off season which should make us more competive & dominant next season
No I was agreeing with you that the Jets weren't dominant on defense in 04'... I don't really quite understand your hatred towards Mr. Johnson, I doubt it's all been all HIS fault why the Jets haven't delivered a Superbowl...But I digress.
I do not hate him as you & others think just pointing out a HISTORICAL unchangeable fact. Certainly you knew my position on Herm so I thought he was really, really stupid in hiring him but that also is another story
Really, champ, you're all over the place here. Woody is not why we lost in 2004, he's not the kicker and he doesn't play defense. If you want to point fingers at the defense for that season, why not look at John Abraham, who sat out the last four games and the playoffs instead of the player who was the defensive rookie of the year? Abraham was here before Herm, and Woody was not the one who drafted him either.
Really I do not think you read the posts above yours before you posted caused if you had you would then have understood what I was replying to in my post. So go back & read ALL the posts & then retract yours.
