Justin Fields averages .97 turnovers per game as starter. Amongst QBs in NFL history that have PLAYED IN 44 games, not even started which would empty the pool even more, Fields would be 25th worst all-time in that category. So yes, he's turnover prone. The numbers say it and the eye test confirms it.
You're disagreeing with a fact, I dunno what more there is to discuss here if you find that productive.
In the history of the NFL, Justin Fields ranks 25th in most turnover per game. You can use whatever adjectives you want but facts are facts.
Let's look at this in a bot of context as he did have most TOs as a rookie: 22 years old: 10 starts, 15 TOs. 1.5 per game. 23 years old: 15 starts, 13 TOs, 0.87 per game 24 years old: 13 starts, 13 TO, 1 per game 25 years old: 6 starts, 2 TOs, 0.33 per game He went from 1.5 as a rookie to 0.33 last year. That is something to be encouraged about.
Hey Im on board with the experiment because it's the best option available to us and I'd love nothing more than to have found our Baker Mayfield or Sam Darnold. That unfortunately doesn't make it a good option. Hoping for the best, expecting the Jets... I mean worst.
He only started 3.5 years though, so the rookie year is weighing very heavily. Some QBs did not even start as rookies. You have to look at these facts in context. He has improved A LOT from his rookie year, where he had most TOs per game to last year where the number is actually quite great.
Im gonna take the 38 game sample size a lot more seriously than the 6 game sample size. Could that be a sign of a turn? Absolutely. But if anyone were saying "he had a bad 6 games after 38 good ones, he's bad" I think the drama llamas here would be having a meltdown.
It’s kind of silly to be looking at historical rankings for a guy still in the relative infancy of his career. One might call it dramatic bullshit.
Still I think it would be more fair to exclude rookie year, where it is pretty much expected he would do worse. There is a definite turn for the better.
You know what would have stopped this convo from even happening? Doing you research into historical rankings to see that no QB has ever played 40+ games and averaged "closer to 2" TOs per game.
I am, because I made my decision based of stats and research. I know that's not common these days but it's how I prefer to form an opinion.
I'm not changing it for two reasons: 1. I loved Aaron Glenn as a kid and my name can be dual-purpose now. 2. My user name is a curse. We don't need anything more working against us when it comes to the Justin Fields experiment. We got enough to overcome.
If Fields can show that he’s competent, next free agency would be when this team likely goes after the household names.
