Not for nothing but when people tried to use the Allen example for Zach Wilson we were told that Allen was an anomaly, an abbreviation. And I am totally on board with that. Usually guys that stink their 1st year never make it. So why does the Allen comparison apply to Fields? We can all agree that the chances of a guy stinking his first year and then going on to being great are slim to none yet it's not a stretch to think it's going to happen twice in a 4 year period with Fields?
I would welcome Fields here with open arms. I doubt the Bears would actually trade him though. That's the type of guy we should be trading for- Fields or Jordan Love, young guys with potential, instead of a 40 year old with drama
It applies more to Fields because they are similar players in terms of style and had similar seasons. Wilson didn’t run for a bunch of yards or improve in nearly every statistical category across the board including two of the more important ones which are completion percentage and TD:INT. Allen transitioning from a guy who struggled hitting guys with 5 yards of separation in college to a perennial MVP is an anomaly. But it doesn’t mean year one and two between Fields and Allen don’t like very similar.
The reason I said the year 2 Zach/Allen comparison was silly was because Zach was nothing like Allen. IMO you have to look at how the QB is progressing in year 2, and the situation he's in. Take Lawrence for example. He was nothing to write home about his rookie year, but he was in a terrible situation. It improved and so did he. Fields was on a bad team his rookie year that got considerably worse year 2. Yet he improved a lot, like Allen, with the help of his legs. The difference is Allen was in a good situation his first two years. Fields has faced much more adversity. My real point on why Fields would be good for us is that he's earning 6 million for the next years. We could actually assemble a genuine contending squad with that savings.
The cap is fake. You worry a bit too much about it. The Saints were in cap hell for years paying Brees a bajillion dollars and never lost a player they wanted to retain.
Well thats a relief. Then we will sign several top FA this offseason. Cool. If we sign Rodgers/Carr, were going to see first hand just how fake the cap is next offseason.
So you have high hopes for Fields next year? I watched a lot of Bears games and he just seems to struggle with the passing part of the QB position.
Last season, Minshew two starts on the NFC champion Eagles were worse than Fields on the last place Bears. Even Eagles fans are out on Minshew now.
Minshew has started 24 games in his career and has a 93.1 passer rating. Fields has started 25 games and has a passer rating of 79.7. Hurts is the starting QB for the Eagles. Not sure why Eagle fans are out on the back up QB. Maybe they can sign Mike White and his 75.4 passer rating
At this point I would say so. Fields is still a relative unknown. I wouldn’t say I have high hopes. It’s a make it or break it year for him and I’m going to assume they add an NFL receiver to the roster. He did enough this year to be given another shot with that team. If they draft a QB and move on and trade Fields I’d say his career is likely dead in the water unless he goes to a really good franchise (Baltimore, Pittsburgh specifically - maybe Seattle or Tennessee to a lesser extent). The kid needs some continuity like all young QBs do.
We can play the "what if" game all you want. Minshew doesn't break off the runs Fields did but he most likely is a better passer. He also wouldn't fumble the ball at the alarming rate Fields did. The Fields horse has left the barn. Not only did the Niners trade up to select a guy not named Fields, they would have taken Wilson over him as well. Last I checked the Niners aren't some clown shoes organization. I'm not sure the Pats take Fields over Jones either.
I’m being facetious. But the cap is easier to navigate than you think it is. You’re shooting for a bottom tier quarterback just because they’re cheaper versus a top 5 QB to top 15 QB. I don’t think so. We’re about as unstable as any organization in the NFL. We don’t retain players we draft, we cycle through coaches every three to four years and fire coordinators after two or even one if one of the units gets scapegoated. What does any of that matter? Fields has been more successful than both Wilson and Lance in the NFL thus far so on the surface (and at this very moment for whatever reason), the 49ers made a poor choice.
