im not knocking the guy at all. Im just saying Ferguson is better for a reason thats all. Justice is projected ahead of McNeil too, there has to be a reason. No doubt McNeil is 1st rd material, but top 5 is reserved for elite(except last year, Alex Smith blows)
No way Jets stay at #4 to pick an offensive lineman or a DL for that matter. The Jets will not fork out that much money - it throws out any chance of balance with regard to positions and salary. Look for the Jets to trade down if they can find a trading partner. The Jets will trade down to at least the #7 slot. Most likely trading partners - OAK, DET, DEN.
Totally disagree on a couple of points. If you've watched the games, you would know that Ellis has had more than "flashes of brilliance." The guy has consistently been a force at DE starting with his first year in the league. Don't forget he was screwed by GERM when forced to gain weight and play DT, and last year was just a loss for anyone on the line, Ellis included. Ellis has shown alot more than flashes, in fact he's one of the guys you will call a building block for the next few years. Also consider that we might not look at Williams because he's essentially a bigger version of ABE and the sentiment is that he's not the right fit for a DE in the the 3-4. If Abe didn't work in the 3-4 given his level of play and body type, why do you essentially want to put a clone in his place? Silly,no?
I would be happy with 1 or 2 lineman with our first 3 picks. We really need it, and we need a good foundation for the future. If there is a chance for us to get Leinart, however, I feel that we must take it. He is the real deal.
I dont think it is a foregone conclusion at all that MArio goes at number two. I reallywouldnt rule out the possibility that they go QB. It does seem unlikely but with the way the Brees contract is structured it would allow for a QB to be taken that early, and lets not forget about the possibility of a trade down.
Good points. I'll disagree with you though. Ellis had an invisible year last year. This was after he got the nice contract originally offered to Abe. Abe had a great year though. So did Vilma. Yes, it is a point that can be argued, and only next year can answer for sure, but I am disappointed with him. I'm not saying he can't reach that upper level again, but I want to see it before I believe it. I just hope that he was not just a better player for having Abe on the other side. Abe isn't gone because he couldn't play the position. Abe is gone due to behind-the-scenes goings-on. Not that I was totally convinced Abe could handle the move to LB in a 3-4, but who knows. I think replacing your pro-bowl pass rusher with a guy who is younger, bigger, but otherwise the same is a very good idea. My biggest issue right now is not taking a QB or RB with our #4. I think Mario is a great pick, but Hawk would be a pretty safe bet, and Brick couldn't hurt us. Or we could just trade down to someone eyeing Matt and clean up. (I would really like to grab Quinn next year.)
No one "hates" Ferguson. There are people who don't want to take him because we already have a player at the position whose upside is not much less than Ferguson's upside.
I personally believe that Ferguson will go to the Saints at #2 unless we trade up. I think they really want to trade down and grab Hawk. They have two good DEs and I see no reason why they would take another, aside from the smoke screen of taking the BPA. #2 is too high for Hawk. Ferguson fills a big need and is decent value at #2, which is why I believe the Saints will take him, and this report is moot. I believe our dillemma at #4 will be Mario Williams or Jay Cutler? (Bush, Ferguson, and Leinart gone).
Hey don't forget that Abe wasn't the disruptive force, sack-leader last year that we all envisioned. He was good, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't call his level of play last year "game changing" like some of the better DE's in the game. Ellis's level of play dropped off along with most of the D- exceptions of course to Vilma, who only gets better, and Abe, who had to improve from his piss poor year the season before. Part of the reason Abe is no longer with the team has to be that he is not suited for the 3-4. I bet that Mangini is willing to look past off the field issues, but when you have a guy who isn't consistently on the field, has a poor attitude PLUS doesn't fit into the scheme you are planning to implement, it's not a good fit. For my money at #4, I like either Brick or Hawk. Something about Leinhart tells me that we'll be the laughing stock of the league in just a few years- a hunch I guess...
We do disagree, but you make fair points. I think Abe's play was great last year. I never thought his play was piss poor though. I still hold the belief that most people hold onto a hatred of Abe for perceived lack of desire in playoffs games, and it hurts the overall opinion of him. Yes, he had off-the-field issues, but for all we know, he learned from the DWI, since he never got in trouble again. Like I said with Ellis, I hope he can come back and play at the level we have always expected of him. Last year may have been an abberration, but he has to prove himself this year as faar as I am concerned. Right now, I'm not confident he can do it with the line we have without a guy like Mario. Maybe Mangini could look past Abe's issues, but Abe wasn't going to look past the franchise tag. I don't blame him either. The tag hurts a player, and to get it twice in two years was probably too much to get over. I wouldn't be upset with Brick or Hawk. Obviously, either one is an upgrade to their respective position. I do still believe that Mario is the biggest upgrade possible though. We are in full agreement about Matt though. QB is a total crapshoot these days. You have to honestly think about the talk that he was helped out greatly by playing on such a good team. Someone pointed out recently that a big question is would Leinhart be as good on Vanderbilt, and would Cutler be better at USC? It's an interesting take, and I think it makes a lot of sense. The risk is too great. Not when we are trying to rebuild. If Penny and Ramsey can't get it done, make the push for Quinn in 2007.
Please no, I would be absolutely pissed if we picked D'Brick. I really want DeAngelo, but I'll take anyone but D'Brick!
Given all of our more pressing needs on this team, you want to waste the #4 overall pick on the 2nd best running back in the class? Glad you're not my gm....
