About time the ball is starting to bounce our way. 1st the solid draft we have had, to picking up a extra pick and finally to seeing our ex players beak their new teams heart like they would've done ours.
As others have noted, Washington for Herm actually has to be the best move so far, but moving Abe (and let's not forget how much it would have cost to keep him) is certainly looking better and better. Now Tannenbaum needs to find someone who can rush the passer.
Maybe it isn't the whole season??? From profootballtalk.com ABRAHAM OUT 3-4 WEEKS Falcons defensive end John Abraham will miss three-to-four weeks due to surgery to repair a tear in a lower abdominal muscle. The injury reportedly is "related to, but not solely linked to" a groin injury that has caused Abraham to miss four of the team's six games this season. "He came in and said it was sore and wasn't getting better," coach Jim Mora said on Tuesday. "We sent him to get a second opinion to see if there was anything we could find. They saw the tear and said, 'Let's fix it.' John felt comfortable doing it now rather than waiting to go through another week and hoping it would get better. I think it gave him some peace of mind." Chauncey Davis will start in Abraham's absence. Abraham signed a six-year, $45 million contract with the Falcons in the offseason. He had been designated as the Jets' franchise player, and was traded to the Falcons as part of a three-way transaction that involved Atlanta sending the No. 15 overall pick to the Broncos, who sent the No. 29 overall pick and a three and a four to Atlanta. The Falcons then sent the No. 29 overall pick to the Jets for Abraham.
Isn't that the same kind of sports hernia he was operated on for a couple of years ago? Damaged goods....
Abraham is a great talent but has the track record of not being able to play a whole football season and is never around when his team makes it to the playoffs and needs his pass rushing skills. Then he comes back the next year asking for a big contract and now he has one and he's back on the injury list with a guaranteed contract getting paid while injured. Too bad Johnny boy, get well soon.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2637084 LOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- John Abraham continues to be slowed by injuries. John Abraham Defensive End Atlanta Falcons Profile 2006 SEASON STATISTICS Tot Ast Solo FF Sack Int 7 6 1 3 3 0 The Atlanta Falcons announced Tuesday that the three-time Pro Bowl defensive end will undergo abdominal surgery and miss three to four weeks. Abraham originally suffered a groin injury in the season opener at Carolina and then missed the next three games before returning for the Oct. 15 meeting against the New York Giants. After leaving the game against New York in the fourth quarter, Abraham missed this past Sunday's 41-38 overtime victory over Pittsburgh. "After rehabbing and working with our medical staff, it was our hope that John would be ready to play against Cincinnati [this Sunday]," Falcons coach Jim Mora Jr. said. "Unfortunately, a second opinion conducted Monday afternoon confirmed that John will need minor surgery to help him get back to 100 percent." Since being selected 13th overall by the New York Jets in 2000, Abraham has played a full 16-game season just three times in six campaigns. Acquired from the Jets in June for a first-round pick, Abraham is part of a talented defensive line in Atlanta that also features Pro Bowl tackle Rod Coleman and end Patrick Kerney. Abraham, who uses his speed to get to the quarterback, has three sacks and two forced fumbles in two games this season. He has 56½ sacks in 75 career games. Atlanta (4-2), which ranks eighth in the league in scoring defense (17.8 points per game), is in second place in the NFC South, one game behind New Orleans.
To all of you guys who hemmed and hawed or yelled and screamed about the Abraham trade... TOLD YOU SO! Abraham has been hurt every year except one - his CONTRACT YEAR! A speed rusher who has constantly had leg and groin injuries is a guy who will not give you what you need game in and game out - and he's proven it over his career. Instead we have Mangold, a building block on the Oline who will anchor our OLine for years to come. Who wants to bet that 3-4 weeks becomes longer, and that he'll hardly play - if at all, the rest of the season?
You get the feeling that if the second opinion came back that he was OK, Abes and his agent would be seeking out a third opinion. You gotta look at the history here. They do not want to jeapordize the back end of that contract.
"Between Mangold for Abraham and Washington for Edwards, Mr T. should be GM of the year!!" Hah I forgot Washington was drafted with one of the extra 4th round picks. Amazing.
I feel bad for him personally because no one wants to see anyone get injured. But I'm glad he is not our problem anymore. He had a great season,
