The Broncos and Jets can easily play the draft card because they are both in the position to get a top rated QB. If he is unreasonable then he can see how desperate the Bills or Cardinals are for his service versus the other options. I am a proponent of signing Cousins; but I don’t believe he’s getting Jimmy G money.
Was very impressed w Garropolo in college,cringed when the patriots took him in Draft & was relieved when he was traded for a non 1st rounder. Despite all of this something tells me he’s being prematurely anointed both perceptually & contractually. I get he looked good w Niners in those 5 games but I’m not sure there’s enough film as of yet for D coordinators to really hone in on some of his weaknesses.Also worry about his frame combined w playing style that already had gotten him hurt during his time in New England. If Kirk Cousins is the Neil O’Donnell of 2018 maybe Garropolo ends up being Scott Mitchell
49ers has no choice. He looked like the next coming of Aaron Rodgers for them (who they already passed on). Let him go get that money from another team and Lynch never gets another GM job again if he continues to play like he has. He got elite money because his potential is still elite. Cousins, on the other hand, doesn’t have elite potential and isn’t getting elite money no matter how many people try to extend this deal to reflect Cousins market value. Of course, maybe I’m wrong. Maybe some team does think Cousins is a top five QB, or can be a top five QB, and will pay him like it. But, make no mistake, Garapollo got paid not because he’s a good QB but because they expect him to be one of the best in the league.
No I agree.Niners had no choice given the circumstances but to re up him for the amount they did.Just won’t be shocked if it ends up backfiring 2-3 years from now

Patriots were smart in that draft year. They identified early that it was a decent QB class & brought in every single QB prospect they liked for a visit on the exact same day.Talk about identifying the alpha & then pouncing. I absolutely loved the approach...what better to prioritize the most important position on the field? Of course it helps when you already have Brady in the fold. I'd love to see the Jets take this approach w. this draft..but no way they have that sort of conviction or innovation Idzik on the other hand had twice the # of picks & somehow ended up having one of the worst draft classes in franchise history hence setting us back an additional 3-5 years.
Yeah but they 49s had 5 early loses by 3 or less points, so it wasnt like they was completely hapless. And their final 5 wins from Jimmy, 2 were by 3 or less and could easily go either way. Garapollo clearly got paid on potential. Cousins doesn’t have that luxury — we know who he is. Any team that thinks he’s a $30 million QB by today’s salary standard should be relegated to the Mexican Futbol league.
I dont think Jimmy will be bad necessarily, honestly just dont know about how he will pan out over time. I do think Jimmy is light years better than Cousins. There were a lot of factors that worked for Jimmy i think in this situation besides potential. He would easily the top qb in this free agency and would have gotten good money from another team. You make some good points. The key will be how good the 49ers are in protecting Jimmy G. Jimmy G can throw from both the pocket and also on the run. He is vulnerable to getting hurt as you say.
This is a good point, but with the importance of QB play in the NFL toady, at some point teams that don't have one simply have to push all their chips to the center of the table and make the bet. There are no grantees with any of theses guys.
The 49's could have tagged him, would have cost them less. Cousin's will be paid more than Jimmy G'esus. That is simply the economics of the league. In fact, I'd bet the reason the 49's didn't tag him is because then they would have to beat what ever deal Cousins received this off season. I don't think it will be 30, but 28-28.5 seems right. Another thing nobody is mentioning is that QB contracts are all essentially 2 year deals. There are 2 guaranteed amounts , amount guaranteed at signing, and guaranteed amount. The big # you see thrown around , $90 million for Jimmy G, $100 mill for cousins are only guaranteed for injury. The amount guaranteed at signing is generally the signing bonus and first 2 years salary. In Stafford's case, it was only one year salary. His guaranteed money is now paid and he can be cut and due nothing.
