The opposite is true. Having Favre for one year sets Cowher back a year. Then who is the QB in 2010??? If Cowher wants his own GM and his own coordinators, why would he not want his own QB?? What does a one year rental of a 40 year old QB get him??? Cowher would want to start fresh and would want Favre gone!!!!!
I could care less about those 18 years. Maybe he shoulda taken some games off this season if he wasn't feeling right. I don't give two hoots about his record of consecutive starts and all that crap (I care more about his lack of understanding of the playbook, his idiotic decision making and his declining physical attributes) the only thing I really care about is the Jets winning a Super Bowl. Favre's storied career with another team means absolutely nothing to me!!!! NOT A DARN THING!!!
This is eerily similar to the Green Bay documentary last year. The Jets would be sending a great message if they make up Brett's mind for him if he misses the deadline. The deadline has to be real though. No equivocating whatsoever. Farve has to commit to the team and can't hold up the team's plans for the draft.
You're missing the point. he wore down mentally at the end of the season, and he admitted when he came into TC that he wasnt in his usual playing shape, and was behind schedule. At 40, he'll need to work harder with his off-season conditioning so that he can stay sharp for an entire season, should he decide to come back. It isnt about being dedicated to PLAYING, it's about being dedicated to the off-season conditioning stuff. It takes more effort to get through the grind at 40 than it does when you're 30.
These fans are nuts. They will clamor for Favre once again and he will suck again, and then all of them will say "I told you Favre should have retired!"
It's only ridiculous if you continue to view Favre's performance in a vacuum. If you ignore the fact that we threw 33.1 times per game while only rushing 26.4 times, especially when you consider how often Favre was being blitzed and knocked down, then sure, it was all Favre's fault. I don't, and never have, excused Favre for making stupid throws. He made quite a number of them. However, he was brought in for what reason? To carry the team on his back when called upon. He was called upon far too often. Is that his fault, or is it the fault of the person calling on him? When you have Leon Washington rushing for an average of 5.9 yards a carry, and yet you only hand him the ball 4.75 times a game, whose fault is that? Favre's? Is it Favre's fault that the conference's best rusher only got 18.13 touches a game? So yeah, I have absolutely no problem calling anyone who puts all the blame of Favre's performance squarely on Favre's shoulders a sheep. I'm fine with the ultimatum, but I'm really tired of people blaming the wrong entities for the failure of this team. The lack of success by the players was a direct result of being put in situations designed for failure. On both sides of the ball.
I agree with you that the coaching was terrible, I also agree that it is ridiculous to put all the blame on Favre but just as ridiculous as putting all the blame on the CS. The combination of terrible coaching and a terrible QB is what doomed this team the last 5 weeks of the season. I do think though that better play from the QB could have overcome the terrible coaching and won the division.
He lead the league in interceptions. 22. There are far worse offenses in the league that put their less talented quarterbacks in worse predicaments. And none of them threw that many bad passes. I am far from the herd. I for one didn't want Mangini fired. I have paid attention for every down this and every season. If you cannot see Fvare as a major part of the problem, then I don't know what to say. We have a quarterback supported by the leading rusher in the league who also scored a ton of touchdowns and he found a way to throw it to the other team 22 times. Blame the coaches all you want, but that was awful QB play.
Good luck on getting his decision, it would not surprise me if he said he was coming back and then decided not to on opening day. FVCK THAT SELFISH PRICK!!!
The only thing I disagree with here is that better QB play would have overcome the atrocious coaching. Even if Favre played better, and had not thrown half those picks, there's no guarantee we'd have scored on any of those drives, and the defense sucked. Yes, Favre's play was absolutely a factor in us losing. I steadfastly hold to the belief that had Schottenheimer called for 60% running plays we wouldn't be discussing Favre at all right now though. Favre trying to compensate for shitty playcalling led to Favre failing (and yes, he did fail.) Like I've been saying though, judging Favre in a bubble is wrong. Could he have held onto the ball rather than throwing picks that even Vinny T wouldn't have thrown? Sure. He'd also have been beaten up here for taking too many sacks right now. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. The way I see it, Favre did what he was brought here to do. Sling the ball whenever the situation called for it. You know what you're getting with Brett Favre. The problem being, most Jets fans weren't prepared for "Favre being Favre." He was told to chuck the ball, he chucked the ball. When you do what you're told to do and fail, that's on the coaching, not the player. See above.
if it comes to it and he does not make a decision in a decent amount of time what are the cap ramifications for the jets? how much is he owed for next year and what is his cap number if he is cut at whatever point? this is very important as far as i am concerned and i really have no idea due to the fact that he was just brought in last year. i think any bonus money is taken off at the time of the trade but i want to be sure. hopefully it doesnt cost anything cap wise. that way we can play a little bit of hardball. i also wonder what happens if he is let go and then goes to minnesota, i know there was jargon in the trade agreement with green bay about him going to minny, i would doubt we would be on the hook to them for cutting his ass.
Those are actually fascinating points. Great job! Intelligent discussion deserves to be commended this week. It's rarer than a Jets Super Bowl. EDIT: So does anyone know the answers to these questions?
Ridiculous. We had a lot of problems including the CS, but none were bigger than Favre. Anybody who watched saw him make poor decisions which led to turnovers, consistently underthrow receivers, and do much more bad than good. Any average game-managing QB could've won at least 3 of our last 5 games. Favre simply did not cut it and there aren't many reasons to bring him back next season.
