I guess we should get rid of Vilma then also. If we can go 4-12 with him, we can manage without him. And you can say the same for every player on the team last year. Let's get rid of them all and play a bunch of high school kids. If you watch the games, you would actually notice that Abraham was the best player on the field last year. He will be missed terribly. And he doesn't want to be here because he saw every other Jet get a contract but him. I don't blame him. As for the Ellis comparison, in retrospect, the Jets would be far better off having paid Abraham a few million more and cutting Ellis loose today than where they are now. I'll take Abe's double digit sacks, 5-6 forced fumbles, and constant pressure over Ellis' pedestrian numbers any day. Elllis is not worth anywhere near the $15 million bonus he got.
That is not my goal what-so-ever. The bottom-line is that the core of this team is finished and it is time to start over. I'd rather bite the bullet this year and get we can than have a disgruntled Abraham infecting a young team next year. We will get a 1st rd pick and he will get his big contract. Everyone wins and that is today's NFL. I am not saying I like, it is just a matter of fact.
Ohhh stop the whining. You know what I mean. Last year everyone was creaming themselves over the Ellis extension. The guy played bad this year and everyone is down. Abraham certainly hasn't helped the Jets in the playoffs the last few years...between injuries and tummy aches. Hindsight is always 20-20, and yes I agree I would rather have Abe. But signing him and cutting/trading Ellis is cost prohibitive. If you want to blame somebody, blame Parcells for putting us in this cap mess in the first place and blame Bradway for trying to get one more year out of the team instead of rebuilding earlier.
Yeah and also notice how the defense played significantly worse when Abraham was on the field running up the field right past runningbacks assuming that every god damn down was a pass. Compare the numbers from the two seasons. When Abraham's numbers were up, our defense played pretty damn bad. Add Barton into the equation and I'm really not worried about the lost of Abraham.
That's just not true. In 2004 Abraham was the Jets best player in the first half of the season, and they were exceptional at the start. Like him or not, Abe is the key to our defense.
let's not forget Mangini may switch to a 3-4, which has no use for Abraham, so trading him makes sense; especially for a R1 pick, if that is indeed what we're getting. cheers
The Broncos also are trying to trade for New York Jets defensive end John Abraham, according to a source familiar with the negotiations. The Broncos likely would have to give up one of their first-round picks to get the pass-rushing ace. The Broncos had initial talks with the Jets about Abraham last week at the NFL combine. Denver is one of perhaps four teams interested in Abraham, including Washington, Houston and possibly Cleveland. No deal is likely to be reached until the CBA negotiation is resolved. But a trade could happen in the next two weeks. The Broncos would have to clear more cap room to sign Abraham http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_3563870
so much for this characters "source" clayton said today that jets are in a possible trade rumor trading abe and 3rd for lions 9th pick, i trust clayton more then this kid and based on that his trade doesnt even add up if we could get a 9th pick for abe and 3rd rounder then how does abe for 29th pick add up?
This is all I found NEW YORK (AP) -- Several teams have expressed interest in acquiring Jets defensive end John Abraham, who has made it clear he wants out of New York. Meanwhile, the Jets appear to be in a holding pattern with quarterback Chad Pennington, who needs to renegotiate his contract to stay with the team. They needed to get a deal done Thursday but got a reprieve when the start of free agency was delayed three days. Abraham, who last week was placed with the franchise tag for the second straight year, probably won't play for the Jets again. His agents, Tony Agnone and Rich Rosa, said on a conference call Thursday that four or five teams said they were "definitely interested" in Abraham but declined to name them. "Change is good and for John Abraham moving forward, change would be good for him," Rosa said. "You get to a point in your career as a player when there's been some unfulfilled promises ... you have to move through that because it's a business. That's what we've been able to do with John, have his sights set on a brighter future." Abraham is unhappy the Jets have failed to deliver a long-term deal, even though they all but assured him they would if he played in every game in 2005. He did, but was given a one-year, $8.33 million franchise tender. Abraham has yet to sign it while his agents weigh their options. "Unfortunately, great players from great teams end up on another team," Rosa said. "This is a business decision and he's not an angry player. This is not about the money with John. This is about being somewhere and being a leader on a team that has a chance to win a championship." Agnone and Rosa said in the best case scenario, they would come to a long-term deal with an interested team and then have the new club work out a trade with the Jets. They hoped to have something done before the draft in April. Last year, Abraham had 10.5 sacks even though he came in late to training camp. Abraham, a three-time Pro Bowl selection in six seasons, has 53.5 sacks, fourth on the team's all-time list. Pennington said earlier this week he wants to stay with the Jets, but his base salary needs to be slashed in order for his contract to fit under the salary cap. The Jets were $26 million over a projected $94.5 million cap, and were also considering the futures of center Kevin Mawae and guard Pete Kendall. Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Abe and a 3rd for the #9 is a pretty sweet deal if it happens. I just hope they then wouldnt package both for the #1
I agree, that would be the worst trade in the history of sports. Bob McNair would give Casserly a quadruple raise if he pulled that off on us.
