It's tempered optimism, what's wrong with looking at all the possibilities? No one is asking for Mac to be fired
It's only 3m guaranteed, so worse comes to worst if he goes down with injury we don't have to eat the whole thing. This guy came back from a lisfranc injury and had a pro bowl season. It's unfortunate that he tore his ACL, but if things work out he's an upgrade over Brick. If not, it's not the end of the world. I'm sure the Jets will still draft a tackle.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think we owe him the full 6M if he gets hurt. It's if we cut him for performance reasons that we recoup 3M.
IMO, great move given the circumstances. Mac doesn't hesitate when there is a roster issue and this another example. Well done.
Pretty sure he was signed after Clady went down but in your scenario they would move Breno over to LT. I don't think that would be a good situation for any of the QBs to be in and no way to game plan is going to help.
My point was that the Broncos put an average guy to hold down the fort after their pro bowl player went down. They did not start trading away picks. I like Mac, but trading away picks is a tannenbaum move.
It's a 5th rounder for a guy that plays like a top 5 player at his position when healthy. This is nothing like a willy nilly Tanny move.
It was a swap of a 5th round for a 7th round pick, well worth it for a player of Clady's experience. It also gives more flexibility in the draft. You also don't give any credit to the difference between having Manning under center as opposed to Fitz. A player of Mannings caliber can cover a lot of deficiencies and he was still getting brutalized back there last year. Harris did not really hold down the fort.
He traded down two rounds. I'd rather do that than force a LT pick in Round 1 if a worthy LT isn't there. The cap hit concerns me more than the pick swap.
I agree with your point about the draft, my opinion is that there won't be a LT good enough to be chosen with the 20th pick.
Sure there's a risk. If there wasn't a risk, Denver probably would have kept him and not signed Okung. Even if they didn't, Clady would have cost considerably more than a 5th round pick with us also getting Denver's 7th round pick. I may be taking a risk, but I'm assuming that Mac will draft an OT high in this draft. If Clady can play and stay healthy for even the first 4-5 weeks of the season, it gives the rookie some time to adjust/adapt to the NFL and learn the offense. Clady could also be a great mentor for the young OT. The fact of the matter is that the Jets needed a vet presence at LT so Mac didn't have to go into the draft having to draft a LT in the 1st round. He still may, but it creates some doubt in the minds of other teams and gives the Jets some flexibility and leeway in how they handle the draft.
You can forget about trading up, unless Mo is the ammunition with which we trade up. We cannot afford to trade away any more draft picks.
No. You know it isn't. Tanny made big splashes in FA. He traded up early and often, wasting a ton of draft picks, then wasted even more with many of the stiffs he drafted.
It's ridiculous to even compare the two. They are NOTHING alike! It's also ridiculous to compare the Broncos' situation to the Jets. The Broncos had a pretty good, experienced RT they could move over to LT, and had a young backup RT they could move into the starting lineup. You wanna move Giacomini to LT? You wanna put Qvale at LT? I doubt anyone else would want to see either of those moves. I understand not wanting to give up draft picks, but the Jets were in a tough spot. IMO they needed to do something NOW, and not wait. They didn't need to go into the draft having to take an LT in round 1.
No, you don't get it at all. We aren't paying him the same as Brick, and no, it made no sense to keep Brick at $14.1 million. In Clady, we have a far superior LT for half the price.
NC, you are wrong about Harris, he was a veteran RT that was moved to LT by the Broncos when Clady went down, but he was not pretty good, he was actually not good at all, he struggled mightily as a pass blocker and run blocker. Fortunately for them, they run a zone blocking scheme instead of a man scheme and that was used to cover for his deficiencies. Maybe if the jets ran a Zone blocking scheme we could put Breno there, but we don't so we can't switch him. But it's not ridiculous to think that we could or should move players around, i guess that's the limitations of the offensive scheme the jets use.
