Umm. For one... One of the best defensive backfield players of All-Time in CHARLES WOODSON! HELLO!!!! And PS: He made the Pro-Bowl that year and played excellent. The Packers DO NOT win a SB without Charles Woodson (FA ADDITION) that year. The Packers gave Woodson a seven-year deal that could be worth as much as $52 million and that was back in 2006!!! lol @ you asking me to give you an example with the 2010 Packers of all teams. Not only did they sign a big time FA player but they added a future 1st Ballot H.O.F player at the time.
Are you suggesting that the Jets are just a few free agents away from a Super Bowl? 'cuz if you are I have this bridge to sell you... Put another way: I'll support bringing in the last piece of the puzzle in free agency when the Jets have built most of the puzzle from the draft. Deal?
The 2012 Ravens actually fit the profile quite nicely. Unless you want to argue that Anquan Boldin's career earnings with the Ravens of $22 million over three years was a big time contract. Which is sort of silly. Or 36 year old Matt Birk making $4 million a year. That entire team was home grown. Along with the majority of the first two early 2000's Patriot teams. The 2005 Steelers as well, other than Farrior (signed three years prior). The 2008 Steelers for that matter as well. It's harder to do without throwing the free agent kerosene on the already good roster fire. But it's not impossible.
I can't really argue with the Trumaine signing (at least not as a player). Tru was a top DB. And before coming to the Jets, Tru played not one, but TWO seasons under the tag. They really wanted him back. It took a Brinks truck to get him in NY. At the time, we felt had our #1 CB nailed down for years to come. Didn't work out. He got the Revis flu. Being a top skill player in the NFL literally requires a year round workout regime, not just the 4 or 5 months the teams are playing. Handing ANYONE $50 Million Dollars would put a serious dent in his winter/summer workouts. At least it would for me. I'd wanna drive my Lamborghini to the marina to spend a month on my new $10M yacht sailing the blue waters of the Mediterranean. That sounds tons better than running wind sprints up stairs in 110 degree heat. Maybe we should focus our DRAFTS on skill players and use FA to fill in 2nd and 3rd tier guys who are still fighting every day to get better and get paid? That way half our top skill players would be playing for free for the first 3 or 4 years. I like that better than paying a Trumaine Johnson a yacht full of jack before even setting foot on the field. I often thought about trading our 1st round pick every year to stockpile 2nd and 3rd round pics. Have like 5 or 6 picks in this range every draft. Sure, we miss out on the Quinnen WIlliams of the world, but we can draft 3 or 4 good starters EVERY draft. AND we have no 1st round premadonnas holding out and demanding huge jack either.
Can't blame him. We can blame the Jets for signing yet another 30 year old corner to a top 5 positional contract after we just did it two years prior and it failed after the first year. Trumaine Johnson had far from the resume that Revis had coming back to us too.
He was the weakest link on that Rams defense and guys argued that he was better than he actually was. Then people said the Jets used him in zone and his strength was in man then it was he was getting a defensive coach who he once played for who would have him play to his strengths,,,yada yada,,,I did not like when they signed him and I am glad they are cutting the cord as they had a need at the time and over paid big time for a guy who is just not very good.
He really did get destroyed. Not often do you see a pick then fumble from the DB cause he got rocked by a WR. Was it Golden Tate?
two of those had nothing to do with Mac though, it isn't like it hasn't been better discussed in the past. The blame game is as bad with Mac as it is Robby bingo, plenty of actual things to smash Mac with without adding things he wasn't guilty of. Blame the owner for Revis and Fitzpatrick and let's be honest nobody was wanting Mo jettisoned either for that matter.
The money flows fast & loose from the Jets when they deal with other teams free agents like this guy was. But with guys like my Robby & Adams REAL Jets who've been here from day 1, worked their behinds off to get to where they are, guys that have exceeded expectations with them the Jets drive a hard bargain.
