For the scheme? no.For the specific method the team is utilizing to fix the OL? No. For the anticipated price tag? No. Warford is obviously younger,a surer bet to start & at this stage a superior talent. But his skillset doesnt really fit what team wants to do esp in pass pro
Agreed, but he's a great run blocker. For a year or two he could perhaps teach Clark, Becton and Edoga some things about blocking. Also, in an article on turnontheJets.com, the author points out: "Larry Waford, OG – A three time Pro Bowler, Warford was released in May by the Saints and is said to be looking for 7 million per year. Brian Winters can be cut for 7.5 million, so adding Warford would not even impact their current cap situation. It has been said Warford would be a horrible scheme fit for the Jets citing his limited athleticism and his slow 40 time of 5.58. While not going down the rabbit hole of what Adam Gase’s scheme even is, Alex Lewis posted a slower three cone time then Warford and Winters who is coming off major shoulder surgery and was never that athletic to begin with. Warford is dominant in the run game and the Jets had the worst rushing offense in the league last year. If you want Chuma Edoga to be your RT of the future, he has a better chance of becoming that playing next to a guy of Warford’s pedigree over someone like Lewis or Greg Van Roten. With Sam Darnold on a rookie deal the focus should be putting the best five linemen possible in front of him and not fail to do so because of the scheme of a sub .500 coach." The bolding is mine, but I think it could make sense for a year or two. Once Clark adjusts to the NFL, learns the offense and improves his pass blocking, wouldn't you rather have Clark and Warford as the OGs rather than Lewis and Van Roten/Winters?
Agree, which is why I didn't think bringing in Long was all that necessary. If Lewis can just stay healthy, especially playing next to a legitimate starting C, he could be a key cog. The problem is history is not on his side when it comes to injuries.
The Jets might have asked, but Kyle Long is apparently not interested in coming back. According to Rick Tarsitano of WGN, Long was asked if there was any truth to the report from the New York Daily News about the Jets asking him to come out of retirement, and Long replied: “No. None.” The 31-year-old Long retired after the end of the season, citing the physical wear and tear. The Bears subsequently declined his contract option, so he’s a free agent. He only played 30 games the last four seasons because of injuries. Like many retired linemen, he’s lost weight since stepping away from the game, making it hard to come back now anyway. This whole thing sounds like another Manish story. THANK YOU FOOTBALL GODS ....The last thing we need is another rundown OL man off the retired heap.
The problem w Warford isnt really the run blocking portion. While hes not an ultra mobile athletic type as the article points out he can effectively & efficiently get to the second level. It’s the wide split/pass protection portion. He’s not the ideal candidate to pass protect out in space. It’s just not his game.Thats not something reflective of a 3 cone. For OL 3 cone is all about change of direction & hitting targets out in space. The drill that im referring to is mirroring. Alexander isnt ideal either but i think he might have slightly better anchor & natural leverage in pass pro. Im not vehemently opposed to Warford i just dont think it’s a no brainer like many believe. That article represents a segment of fan base i strongly disagree w. This idea that OL is the only thing that matters yet somehow scheme/fit/optics are irrelevant & that OL are one size fits all. Why go through all the trouble of prioritizing the unit when they arent willing to look at the whole picture? Scheme matters.Fit matters.
Thanks. I definitely think that scheme fit matters, and I don't think that's what the author was saying, nor was he saying that OL was the only thing that matters. I think he was implying that he didn't think that Gase would be here past this season, and perhaps Warford would fit the next HC/OL Coach's scheme or they'd adapt to fit Warford. I think Clark and Becton could handle either scheme, and Clark could probably handle the man scheme better. I think McGovern would be fine in either scheme. When you say "Alexander" are you referring to Alex Lewis? That has me confused.
Yes i keep mistakingly referring to him as Alexander. He must subconciously remind me of Dan Alexander
Good players who enjoy the game retire for a reason, usually because their skills and playing ability have eroded enough to where their shame in no longer being able to play up to their standards wins out over other factors encouraging them to keep playing Talking someone out of retirement is pretty fucking stupid And rarely effective
Yeah but who is out there in free agency right now head and shoulders better than what we have? We could possibly get someone decent in a trade but who knows what the trade market is for receivers.
He missed the opportunity in free agency and the first round of the draft. I like the Becton pick but I would have liked a wide receiver pick alot more. The money Robbie got the Jets could have easily matched.
Theres still the supplemental draft, june cuts & a possible trade that could happen. Not getting my hopes up. We’re headed down the same rabbit hole as 2011 & 2012..Young QB w all resources going into OL & Defense & absolutely no viable help on the boundary.
WRs aren’t important Kurt Because you can find HOFs in free agency Remember when the Jets let Terance Mathis go? This organization simply shits on the WR position Douglas cares so much about the WR position that he traded down in the 2nd round That’s the “These 5 WRs are all the same” mentality previous GMs have possessed
I agree they should have kept Robby. They didn’t get Perriman for much less so I thought that was stupid to pass on him. I think it was Gase that pushed to not retain him but who knows. The only other players that were out in free agency there who was clearly better than Robby were AJ Green and Amari Cooper but their own teams tagged them. I guess there was Emmanuel Sanders but at 33 years old I am not sure he would have been a good fit here. The team took an unnecessary risk letting Robby go.
