It also, could be a matter of they might be pressing, trying too hard or are thinking too much since they aren't familiar with the offense, their assignments, and haven't adjusted to the speed of the NFL yet.
Tighter windows, more pressure, faster game speed, greater expectation... any number of small factors can contribute I would think. It is the same in most sports - every time you take a step up in standard there's a chance you hit your ceiling and just can't deliver. And in football, with no minor league or B standard, I would imagine the leap from college to pros is bigger than most.
The difference from college to pro depends on a few things. -What conference you played/what kind of offense you played in. —Fans make the mistake of thinking that a certain route is dictated by a play call, which is true in many college systems. In the pros, there are a set of routes that the play Call dictates. It is the receivers job to select the right one based on press/off, man/zone, the defenders leverage, and blitz/no blitz. Theoretically there could be as many as 10-15 route variations a receiver has to correctly chose from on a given play call. -The difference in competition level. —Many times receivers who come into the league are bigger and faster than a lot of their competition, or the competitions technique is very unrefined. Along with this, any coverage they had to read was likely much simpler. Perfect example, a friend of mine played FS at Memphis back in the early 2000’s. He said they played 3-3-5 and any time they had cover 0 they blitzed. As a receiver that is a very simple read, and completely unlike an NFL scheme. -Overall speed of the game. —The ball moves faster in the air, the ball comes out faster, the defensive backs close on the ball faster, it’s a big transition, the linebackers and safeties hit harder as well so you’re more aware of the hits you’re gonna take.
With Donte Moncrief and now Kevin White coming in for try-outs, it is pretty obvious that Cager & Campbell aren’t really impressing. I know it’s early days, but that is disappointing. Having seen Dez Bryant’s practices and try-out vids, I would be tempted to bring him in, as long as he doesn’t want too much money. Even if he is just used in the red zone, as he still has great hands, and we must capitalise on red zone visits.
everything I read said cager has been impressing. haven't heard anything on campbell. If I had to guess at this point i'd say we keep mims perriman crowder hogen cager berrios and if we keep a 7th moncrief campbell and jeff smith can wind up on the practice squad
I disagree. Moncrief and White were brought in because they're veterans. With the exception of Perriman and Crowder, ALL of the Jets WRs are either rookies or very yoiung, and have little or no experience in the NFL. I have read tweets from TC where both Cager and Campbell have made highlight reel catches. Dez Bryant? You've got to be kidding. He was toast years ago, and has totally the wrong attitude and character for what JD is building here. Sam has Herndon, Griffin, Bell, Gore, and if Cager makes the team, he will have targets in the Red Zone.
To your point, I’m quite anxious to see how many WRs will the Jets have in the final roster, hopefully seven. Four are pretty well fixed in my mind, barring serious injuries, Hogan, Mims, Crowder and Perriman. That leaves Cager, Barrios, Campbell, Smith and Moncrief, among the most talked about in camp, with maybe a late surprise cut by another team. I’m hoping Cager makes the cut, with may be Campbell and Smith added to the practice squad. Could it be Moncrief plus Barrios if we go with seven...or even goin with a last minute cut from another team? We will now soon enough.
Isn't Barrios the punt returner? If so, I think he will make the team. He's also Crowder's backup for the slot, so I think he will definitely make the team. I'm hoping that Cager will make the team as well. It would be great if we could keep Campbell and Smith on the PS. With the injury issues we've had, I will be shocked if they don't keep 7 WRs. For as little talent as some posters say this team has, I think the final cuts are going to be hard. I think there are going to be 2-3 players the team winds up having to cut that they would have really liked to have kept. Hopefully, they'll clear waivers and make it to the PS.
I’d say I doubt moncrief makes the final cut for the simple reason they won’t want to guarantee his contract for the year. Mims Perriman Crowder Hogan Berrilos Cager Jeff smith V smith ir dfr.
7 WRs is a insane number no way. Even if the Jets were bursting at the seams with top WR talent which they're not that number would be hard to believe. I've been reading they're planning on using Bell much more as a receiver in 2020 so you have to factor that in as well. Mims, Crowder, Perriman are the only locks I think. The rest of 'em (take your pick) are battling for one or two spots.
I hope they keep 7 WRs. Someone will have to be cut when V. Smith returns. It will be interesting to see what happens with Smith. I read one good thing, but also saw 2-3 bad plays where he caused an interception by running the wrong route or stopping on the play, and was immediately pulled off the field. He might need to go to the PS. I think there's a good chance that JD might sign a WR cut by another team. Burnett would be a good signing if he looked as good in the Eagles camp as someone posted. If Tyler Johnson is cut, he would be a good signing as well.
Id keep Mims & the Veterans at this stage. Perriman-Mims-Crowder-Hogan-Moncrief-Berrios At the very least surround Sam w experienced route runners before the major draft based talent infusion next season. Also takes some pressure off of Mims as he adjusts
He posted that over 2 weeks ago. The initial camp reports barely mentioned them and if it did it wasn't particularly positive. Once the injuries started happening around that time they started making some plays, Cager in particular.
Hi Falco, typically Cager started performing better after I posted this (Aug 21). Hope we get him on the practice squad as he was someone I had hopes for out of the undrafted guys. I would love to see us bring in Sanu, as a replacement for Vyncint Smith. As an experienced vet; he could really add some depth to the squad.
You would have to think they have something in mind if they cut all five of the guys if they cut today, including Moncrief who I thought was a lock to make the team. there’s no way they can feel good about going into the start of the season with five healthy receivers, and I use the term healthy very lightly, after Smith and Smith go on the IR
As I say, Sanu would really add depth and a proven pair of hands for Sam. Hakeem Butler may be worth a look too. Andre Roberts has just been released too, but would prefer someone taller for red zone threats.
