They signed a veteran TE to compete for depth and as a blocker (almost certainly to a minimum contract as the other depth signings have been).... What's the problem?
Sudfeld became a luxury when they drafted a receiving TE. Plus he hasn't really developed IMO. Davis is a nice blocking TE who can catch the ball OK.

Always felt they had a little void after letting go of Ben Hartstog a few years back..they never made an effort to replace him..it seems like in the last year's of MT and both years of Itzig they stopped paying attnetion to the details..like blocking TE, veteran depth, etc... at least the new regime is thinking about these things..
He hasnt been a good blocker in quite a while. I'm not sure if he's just been injured the last 2 years or has been regulated to the bench but his snaps took a huge drop off after 2012.
Too bad we didn't get that TE from Greenbay that muffed the on-sides kick. lol So if hes a blocking TE with stone hands who won't be part of the passing game, why not just put a 6th lineman out there? Are there rules against it? We have like 50 of them now.
The impact of an athletic blocking tightend can't be underestimated. People love to knock Anthony Becht as a bust but he solidified our edge running game for years. Putting an extra lineman in the game means they have to report as eligible and literally red flags the defense for a run play coming up. I like the move if he can still block as we haven't had a good blocking tightend since Becht. It takes off a lot of pressure from the tackle to the strong side because they don't have to reach block as far to get outside leverage on a defensive end or linebacker. They get to focus more on drive blocking at the point of attack which is especially against all these 3-4 defenses these days. No matter how slow or in athletic a tightend is he's always a thousand times a better receiving option than a backup tackle which makes them much more of a factor than checking in tackle eligible all the time.
ahhh thanks! Who besides me would love to see and laugh if Richardson was put in as #6. The other team's D would be in instant disarray. I really hope we use him on goal line again. That was sweet. Damn I miss Rex already!
IMO, Cumberland can go and I hope the door does smack him in the ass on the way out. I'm sick out hearing about what a wonderful TE he is from announcers and coaches. Then, when the actual freakin' games happen, he is a no-show. I'm sure you're right about him heading to Buffalo tho. Doesn't worry me in the least....
