I think it unlikely the Flynn signing makes it more likely that the Jets would cut Petty. It may make it more likely they put Smith on IR, though.
I agree that it's a decent signing, but disagree that there is no reason to think Flynn can't stay with the team all season. There's a perfectly good reason. The Jets have no reason to carry 4 QBs all season. As it is, they're probably going to wind up losing a player they would have liked to keep. Presently there are more WRs, RBs, DL & DBs than the team will be able to keep. Flynn is not that good, is arm isn't very strong, and he would just take whatever few practices snaps there are away from Petty if he's still here.
I wouldn't spend one second worrying about the Jets releasing Petty. It's not gonna happen. If Mac should have a brainlock and release him, Petty will be gone, and all the worrying in the world won't change it. It will just say either that Petty's not the answer or that Mac is not the GM that many of us think he is.
Yes, the odds of Petty being released is 0.00%. Even if he punches Geno in the jaw tomorrow. Just kidding. But maybe.
Yes. good post. I too bet this will happen. Provided they don't find someone else cut prior to week 1 that they like of course.... They are getting him in now and getting him reps/familiarity but they'll risk it with Petty backing up Fitz week 1. then they can grab Flynn if they still want and save themselves some money
I just daydream a lot that Fitz,Flynn and Petty have phenomenal pre-season appearances in the next 3 games and Bowles has a hard time figuring out who he should start in the season opener...Journeyman,Camp Body or stud Rookie? The moral to the story is Mac calls Geno and tells him he can start throwing balls in his driveway again if he wants to...
Yup, Heaps is more likely to get cut than Petty because they can probably stash him on the PS. Like @APK 8 said, Flynn will, more than likely, get cut before WK1 because of the salary guarantee. Smart, low risk stuff by the FO. Certainly better than what happened in 07.
If we cut him and his hamstring has healed he may end up back where he came from, in New England..that wouldn't be a very wise move.
yea we should be terrified that NE would scoop up off our qb trash heap. I for one probably won't sleep much tonight now that the thought has entered my mind.
