Warren is just a good player. I think he fits into this scheme perfectly at free safety.

If Brodney Pool ends up getting injured, Warren should be the guy that fills that spot.

I think a lot of Warren's inconsistency at Michigan were because of poor coaching from Rich Rodriguez's staff full of idiots. Under Ron English, one of the nation's best defensive coachces at the time, Warren was an All-American.

Gracias........ I do not follow College but just like you and Cto from one post below echo the sentiments of almost everyone I know that is a Michigan fan.

Warren's combine and pro-day killed his stock...and Tanny reaps the benefits.

This guy could realistically be coached up into a viable starter at safety.

As an UDFA he's fantastic value, and he was my #1 FA target for the Jets as soon as the draft ended...and evidently the Jets' too.

Undrafted Donovan Warren determined to show Jets he belongs in NFL

He was poring over the playbook like a coed cramming for finals, ready to put the biggest misstep of his life behind him.

On Thursday night, Donovan Warren studied every page and examined every formation. Less than a week after the former Michigan cornerback, who skipped his senior season, went undrafted, he held strong to this belief: His NFL dreams didn’t die last Saturday.

Inside a cramped Jets locker room Friday, Warren didn’t regret a decision that put him in the fight for his NFL life. He didn’t complain. He didn’t whine. He didn’t make excuses. When the Jets signed the first-team All-Big Ten selection as an undrafted free agent, he knew his mission: Prove yourself.

“Being undrafted, I feel like I have a chip on my shoulder,” Warren said during the Jets’ rookie minicamp in Florham Park. “Every day I’m going out there, I got something to prove. That’s something I’m looking forward to each and every day. That’s just motivation for me to just keep on pushing and keep on going forward.”

Warren, who led Michigan with four interceptions last season, declared for the draft in December. The NFL advisory committee projected him as a middle-round pick, an assessment that convinced Warren that he’d made the right decision.

An ankle injury changed everything at the NFL Combine.

Warren’s disappointing 40-yard dash time — 4.59 seconds — slid him down draft boards. He attempted to impress scouts with an impromptu 40-yard run at Michigan’s Pro Day — he borrowed a teammate’s cleats — but the ankle wouldn’t cooperate. Before long, Warren’s stock had plummeted.

“Every decision is a gamble,” said Warren’s godfather, Mark Carrier, who was hired as the Jets’ defensive line coach this offseason. “I don’t think he regretted it. Obviously, I think he wished things worked out a little bit different for him. But . . . the Michigan he went to wasn’t there anymore. For him to go back, was that going to be more of a burden?”

After the draft, the 5-11, 195-pound Warren drew interest from the Dolphins, Vikings and Seahawks.

But he embraced the Jets — and a position switch.

“He’s a smart kid,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said. “We’re playing him in both spots — corner and safety — but I think his best shot will be as a safety. He was probably the highest-rated player (on our board) that was still left.”

Carrier, a three-time Pro Bowl safety during his 10-year career, admitted his godson will have to tinker with the aggressive, physical style that made him a standout cornerback in college.

“That’s a different mind-set,” Carrier said. “You got to have a certain air of arrogance and confidence about yourself (as a cornerback). At safetyÂ… you got to have a broader spectrum of the defense. You got to be a part-coach on the field and know what everybody’s (doing) on the back end.”

Carrier also dispelled the notion that Warren will be given more leeway due to their close ties, admitting that “if anything, it probably works against him because he knows me.

“He’s got to go out there and perform,” Carrier said.
