Thanks for the compilation, Will. I read a lot of that in random tweets but it's nice the way you combined the info.

    Hadn't heard the Westhoff stuff.

Not a problem - I'm in Europe so end up trawling multiple reports but find many commentators have personal favourites so look at many reports to try and get realistic overview.

Catapano trying to transition from DL to OLB

Definitely not enough to go around. If Petty were only able to close the gap on Geno Smith, but it doesn't appear to be happening. He will get plenty of PT during preseason games.

They should take some reps away from both Petty and Smith to make it happen.

Petty was 0-7 yesterday. hack can't do that? What's the point in drafting a 2nd round QB to groom and then not giving him reps in practice to groom him. I understand it's a crowded spot but you gotta make it happen.

Especially if they plan on playing him quite a bit in preseason like you suggest. That means they would throw him completely to the wolves after hardly getting a play or 2 of live action in practice. Doesn't seem like a very smart plan for developing a QB to me

I guess they really want to take a good look at Petty before doing something drastic. Hack is a far better prospect then Petty IMO and I hope the Jets find an answer out on Petty soon. They should take reps away from Smith especially if he's playing poorly.

Agree but dont forget this is what the media see - no idea what TB plans are

Part of the problem is likely they need to feed Fitz more after he missed the OTAs etc.
Geno has played well for the most part and they need to work him to ensure he is a capable back up - Fitz will not slide properly and has a history of not going for all 16 games over the past few years (11 for Titans and 12 for Texans).

Petty needs to step up FAST

I think they could very well get Hack a Qtr per preseason game and see what they have then - they can throw more if happy with the RB situation

oh, ok I didn't realize that was just what the media sees. Maybe that's the point then. They limit his reps when the media is there because these clowns will build him up or tear him down too much depending on how he looks

I feel that the coaches know he will be under the microscope and that his basics are not ready yet- in 11 on 11 or even 7 on 7 he will be thinking more about mechanics than reading the D and setting up his receivers. Better to fix the fundamentals slowly - they dont have to rush it and then unleash in Reps - This article for me captures that sentiment

The Jets made a pair of moves at RB this morning as the club signed Matthew Tucker and waived Terry Williams - heard he muffed a punt and only lasted a single day - HARSH!!!

Tucker, a 6’1”, 227-pounder, originally signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in April of 2013. He spent most of his two seasons with the Eagles on the practice squad and was active for two games in 2013. Tucker left Texas Christian third on the school’s career rushing list with 33 touchdowns and 10th in rushing yards with 2,602 yards.

Williams, an undrafted back from Kutztown University, signed with the Jets Wednesday after getting an invitation to the Giants' rookie minicamp in May. He finished his Golden Bears career with 1,501 rush yards and 22 TDs.

I don't think they're going to be throwing Hack to the wolves. First and foremost, they have to get ready for this season. Unless they're not happy with Petty's progress and are thinking about cutting him, Hack will just have to wait. The most important thing is for him to work on his fundamentals. He doesn't need to be worrying about running plays at this point. He needs to focus on all the components that go into improving his accuracy. Hack has next offseason and next season to get a lot of reps once his fundamentals are sound. If he's out there getting a lot of snaps and trying to learn plays and make plays, he's not going to be focusing on his fundamentals.

I disagree that they need to take reps away from Geno and give them to Hack. Hack needs to focus on his throwing mechanics/fundamentals and get his accuracy issues straightened out. The last thing he needs is a bunch of reps where he's focusing on the plays, making reads and not on his mechanics. Since Geno is going to be the backup, he needs all the reps he can get. He's not playing poorly. He had a bad day the day before, as did Fitz, and then a great day yesterday. After the poor OTAs Petty has had, and a shaky camp so far, they need to find out whether or not he's worth keeping. Once Hack gets his mechanics straightened out, he'll get plenty of reps.

I haven't heard much from the Geno camp, but the Jets need to start working on getting Hack up to speed. Absolutely needs to get the mechanics down, but I would rather him learn by getting reps in a real time situations as opposed to being on the sidelines practicing his footwork, because are you really learning? What happens when Hack gets pressured? Will he revert back to his old style? I don't question Hack's ability to make calls and making reads.

I don't think very highly of Petty, I hope they make a decision on Petty soon cause I would like to see Hack get more reps, he's the better QB.

    As an fyi....

Getting a lot of camp stuff from Westhoff on SNY Jets Nation and Sportsnite. Best since he's been at it imo, more too. Hope they keep it up.

I think he's on ESPN radio too. But I have a hard tuning into that shit otherwise so I miss that

Day 7 – a rest day for a lot of the older vets – Fitz / B Marshall / Decker & David Harris all have the day off. This should ensure both Darron Lee and Hack see more reps with 1st team. Revis in pads and involved in 11 on 11s

No sign of Zach Sudfeld (knee) or Bernard Pierce (hammy)

    QB

Fitz sat and the others all upped their game –Bryce Petty bounced back today. Two more practices for Jets this week. Petty started slow finished fast with nice throws to J Marshall beating Burris and others as well doing well as he had back to back TDs – Hack opened with a strip sack but held up well thereafter

Per Slater “Jets will still have an interesting decision to make on Petty -- active roster or practice squad. He's not catching Smith for No. 2 job.”

    RB

Swapped out a bottom of the roster guy for a similar type – muffing a punt ended the formers chances and shows how important performance is to the Jets these days – a major positive IMO. Morris made some plays but lefty others on the field making it harder on him to make the roster - PS still likely.

Forte will miss preseason opener due to hammy – TB not concerned as 1st team will only go 1-2 series max and no reason to risk him.

    WR

No B Marshall or Decker made harder Vs secondary but J Marshall had a mixed practice – some drops when going against Revis but also made some catches.

Peake had the catch of the day though, he hasn't been nearly as impressive or consistent as Jalin but Peake made a magnificent one-handed catch while dragging both his feet to stay in bounds. Charone Peake with a magnificent one-handed sideline catch which some compared to OBJ’s last year – nice to hear him getting noticed.

    TE

Jason Vander Lann had some drops as he looks for a PS place – too far back to make a run at a place on the roster.

    DEFENSE

    DL

    http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/08/jets_muhammad_wilkerson_provides_update_on_injured.html

Julien Obioha picked Hack on short dump off screen to Williams – his second of camp as he seeks a place on PS.

    http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/08/watch_leonard_williams_jets_defensive_linemen_run.html

    LB

Either Freddie Bihop (x2 repoeters) or Dion Barnes had a strip sack of Hack. Lee was not involved even with Harris resting – Henderson and Carter got 1st team reps, puts pressure on Taiwan Jones for final ILB active roster spot. Darron Lee when he got a shot popped Dominique Williams over the middle. A little payback for Williams getting Lee yesterday while scoring a touchdown.

    CB

Burris continued to show well and while Williams has struggled with his coverage this camp and Milliner has showed well Williams still ahead with CS based on today’s reps. Dee Milliner must've been studying some film of Charles Tillman because he executed the 'Peanut Punch' to perfection. Thompkins made a great catch, fell down to the ground, got up before being touched and ran down field when Milliner ran over and punched the ball loose and pounced on it for a turnover. This was the third or fourth instance of Milliner causing a forced fumble so far this camp.

    S

Rontez Miles managed a sack of Geno early on but little else to go on.

    Kickers

Both kickers making it a tough competition and hitting from distance – TB wants to see what happens in game situations before making any decisions

One doesn't get focused work on fundamentals when one is working on executing plays. As you said, Hack knows how to read Ds, He doesn't need work on that yet, but even if he did, what difference would it make if he couldn't hit wide open WRs? He can learn the offense, that's no biggie. The BIG question mark with Hack is his accuracy. If he can't fix that it won't matter how well he can read Ds or how well he knows the offense. If he has fixed his fundamentals, they will be there when he's under pressure. They become habitual and automatic. One develops confidence in that and one is able to relax and let one's talent take over. This isn't opinion, but fact. This is what I do for a living. This involves basic pedagogical principles.

There are no guarantees that anyone will be able to master the needed techniques for any kind of endeavor. Some can and some cannot. When one does focused work on technique and fundamentals, one has a much better chance of learning and being able to master those things. The only way one fixes technique and fundamentals is by isolated, focused work on those things apart from anything else. The absolutely worst thing the Jets could do is to give him a lot of reps and have him focus on executing plays rather than fixing his fundamentals.

The Jets don't need to start getting Hack reps. He's a rookie and Mac has said that he wouldn't play this year even in a disaster-type situation. This is his redshirt year. This is the time to fix his fundamentals. If they aren't going to let him focus on fundamentals now, they might as wel lgo ahead and cut him now, because he'll never amount to anything. I'll guarantee that. How many young QBs are they supposed to ruin because the fan base is too impatient?

Repetition. Under pressure, you want to see Hack hit that 5 yard out-route with consistency. Rep after rep after rep, until it is burned in your brain. In terms of fundamentals under pressure, players do revert back to bad habits like a Blaine Gabbert who has 0 pocket presence. That is evident by tape, just because you practice your footwork on your own doesn't mean when the lights are bright you will exhibit the same reaction especially under pressure. There is something about being hit hard that can change your mental psyche, so you need to see how he reacts under pressure because in college, Hack didn't do so well after O'Brien left. See the Temple game.

Hack needs to be ready or close to ready next year. Give the man some more reps so the Jets can see what type of workload he can take. Jets aren't starting him or throwing him into the fire, him getting more reps will only accelerate his learning process, not ruin it.

Dude, you have no idea what you're talking about. This topic isn't a matter of opinion, but fact. Teaching people to use their bodies in the most efficient and healthy manner is what I do for a living. I've been doing it for almost 40 years and I have a Masters Degree in it.

Sure, if a person hasn't had enough focused practice on his fundamentals and tries to move too quickly to performing, he can revert under pressure. Even after one is pretty secure in those new fundamentals early on when one begins "performing" one can revert, but if one has worked hard and focused on the fundamentals, those reversions are short-lived. The person is aware of it and fixes it. If one tries to perform while one is working on fundamentals or before one has had an opportunity to retrain the mind and body, the fundamentals will almost never get fixed and the performance will be extremely uneven, if not downright suck most of the time.

A few things I picked up but omitted previously

OL – Chan Gailey is moving to a zone blocking scheme this year.

QB stats from yesterday – don’t forget no B Marshall or Decker available going against the 1st team D less Harris and Mo.

Geno 10/19 – no ints but took a sack on the final play ending the drive which was to be a hail mary

Petty was 5/12 but threw 3 TDs and began to get it.

    Hack 3/5 with 1 int.

Then how come you are not an NFL coach? You should know then that not all players learn the same exact way. Some can run before they can walk, but that's why coaches are there because they can gauge that. You can always have Hack take a step back if he were to fall. You are acting as if he is playing against first string defense. I hope he continues to get live action so he can actually compete on the field. Competition always makes one better.
