Mixed emotions on this one. It's nice that the Jets aren't going to have hole at RT going into the draft, however I don't see Clements as a plus player. He's more a hold-the-line kinda guy and manhandling victim when the Pats or Ravens comes up on the schedule. I have to keep reminding myself that the Jets really are rebuilding. Nothing wrong with journeymen placeholders while that process continues to keep the Jets respectable.
nice move, if he starts we know he can be a serviceable player and if we can upgrade we have tremendous depth at the position.
There is something to be said for OL building chemistry over time. With this signing, I see the Jets going defense in the early rounds and OL later in the mid-rounds.
I don't like it. He wasn;t all that good. Brick is already better and plays a harder position....I wish we had done more to get Colombo...but I guess that even if we drafted a guy in a later round he'd have to develop for a while anyways....I just think Clement is mediocre.
The Jets better improve their run blocking. Maybe another year as a group will help, still need to look for other options though.
I like this move! It's like last year when we signed a center before the draft. He was insurance if we did not draft Mangold and a placeholder for Mangold to get up to speed. Yes, he got hurt but the management decision was sound. This way if they see a RT they like in the draft they can still take him like they did last year with center.
No way I take a tackle on the first day. If I go o-line on the first day get a guard. Kendall is aging and Moore can be upgraded. I still wound't go o-line until the 4th round, first I would get a WR/TE (whichever is better), CB, NT, and LB.
COmfortable I wouldn't feel too comfortable as we're still unsettled at CB, DL, and potentailly TE and LB (depending on who you ask). But you have to like the move, if nothing else he was pretty solid last year and you can never have too many 6'8" tackles...
if the jets have an opportunity to get a blue chip guard in the first then that must be the pick..the running game was ranked 30th last season...build a great offensive line NOW while the perfect opportunity is at hand.i would love to see what leon washington can do in the 4th qtr with great run blocking..

Details of the contract were not immediately available. Clement, 30, signed a one-year deal with the Jets last spring as an unrestricted free agent, when he was coming off a disappointing 2005 campaign in San Francisco. At the time, he was regarded by the New York coaches primarily as an insurance policy at tackle, a proven veteran to hold down the No. 3 job at the position. But the former Southwestern Louisiana standout won the starting job at right tackle in camp, solidified the position, and started all 16 games. It represented an excellent comeback season for Clement, given that he had started only 13 games combined in 2004-2005, and was seen around the NFL as a player in decline. Although he has played some on the left side during his career, the veteran is a prototype strongside tackle, and the Jets certainly got the most out of him in 2006. He and then-rookie D'Brickashaw Ferguson, the first-round draft choice who started all 16 games at left tackle, brought stability to a revamped unit. Originally a second-round choice of Arizona in the 1998 draft, Clement played seven years for the Cardinals before signing with the 49ers in 2005. I love it.. god damnit people wanna draft guards in the 1st rd . when we need defensive help. clements was more than solid last year. he was our best run blocker after mangold.
People forget at one time he was very highly touted. He had a solid year last year, definitely earned himself another year on the team and provides the flexibility the Jets want to go out and grab the best player available in the draft. I'd still love Greg Olson on this team, give Chad a running game and a pass catching tight end and the offense is tailored to his strengths. I still refuse to believe he cant lead us to a super bowl when Turnoversauras Rex got Chicago in the big game.
Another thing is honestly...I trust Mangini's judgement. He had him as a player for a year, he knows his work ethic and he knows what type of player he is, I doubt he'd bring him back if he didn't think he could be successful.
