You're absolutely right. Let's just call off the season and hand the Patriots the Lombardi Trophy. You never know what can happen in the NFL. It is not out of the realm of possibilities that the Pats get struck by the injury bug at an important position...Brady perhaps, and their season tanks. It truly is idiotic to put so much stock in what happens during the offseason. Let's play the damn games before we scream "DOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!".
See if he agrees to the idea that Dan Snyder should have won a few Lombardi trophies himself with the kind of mega-blockbuster deals he had worked out for years.
Conversely its just as annoying to hear the "trust in tangini" mantra that is continually thrown around here, like they are mistake-free. I am all for letting the season play out but if you don't think that we are lagging behind the Patriots then you must put zero stock into any off season moves or just have blinders on. I understand that nothing in the NFL is guaranteed, but it feels like anyone around here who even remotely admits that the Patriots have had a better off season is not being a good Jets fan. Let's face some reality here, the Jets ARE and SHOULD be the underdogs in both games with New England this year. You can't be serious. That 4-12 team was coming off a 10-6 year and was a couple Brien shanks away from the AFC championship game. We had even rented Ty Law in the hopes of competing for a championship! Injuries completely derailed that team and the walls caved in. To say that the cupboard was bare is ridiculous, this Jets had talent before the Tangini era.
It certainly wasn't bare, but the Tangini era yielded D'Brick, Mangold, and Washington in the draft, who were all vital to last year's success. And that's the key word: "success". How can you all be critical of last year's team when it surpassed all expectations? I wasn't on this board last offseason, but I believe that all of you were hoping for 8 wins. The fact of the matter is, no one on this board was disappointed with last year, and that's all the track record that the new regime has. So they're batting 1.000, and I don't see why we should believe that next year is going to be worse again. I just realized I repeated the Tangini mantra you just said you hated. Sorry about that...Let me just add that the Jets were never going to catch the Pats this offseason, or even maintain the gap because of the off season they had.
I never said they were mistake-free, but nothing they were going to do this offseason was going to catch the Pats. The Pats are an established team who just needed to add a few new players. If people thought we would catch them in one offseason they were being delusional.
No one was more shocked with last year?s success then I was. I had hoped for the best but expected the worst, so yeah it was a pleasant surprise. In fact next to the Patriots win, my second favorite game last year was the Colts loss. It showed me this team had the potential to be elite. I definitely think Mangini needed to get off his career on the right foot, and that initial success will be essential in the future in dealing with turmoil. If he had to struggle through a couple 3 or 4 win seasons like Crennel in Cleveland, I just don?t think he would have had the fortitude, especially with the NYC media. All that said and as greedy as that sounds, batting a 1.000 to me would have been the Superbowl. It was a great season, one that will hopefully spell future success but this team did not reach the ultimate goal. I understand these things take time but there are a ton of legitimate concerns that could derail this team next year. Of all my concerns the biggest one by far was the relative weakness of our schedule last year. I have a feeling that 10-6 will be much harder to come by next year although if we do that says a ton about this team. As for the Patriots it is my point exactly that we were not going to catch up with them and we haven?t. That doesn?t mean we should forfeit any games, it just means if we beat them then that is an upset. Mangini has done a great job so far but I think next year is going to say a lot about the character of this team, I will be hoping for the best?..
"Greedy" doesn't do your post justice. On another note, if Mangini exceeded your expectations last year, why can't he do it again?
O.K. How about a slight change of pace here. Did anybody look at the opposite end of the spectrum? When I saw who #'s 31 and 30 were, I know it gave me a good chuckle. Now as for anybody panning our management staff, please remember that not too far in the past, this was exactly how our team was being written up about. 31. Miami Dolphins Rough off-season in Miami. The Nick Saban debacle was a disaster and the start of the Cam Cameron era hasn't been much better. Joey Porter was involved in a highly publicized, embarrassing off-season slap-fest with Levi Jones at a Las Vegas casino; the quarterback position is still an enormous question mark; and the head coach was heckled and mocked when announcing the team's first round pick at a draft party. Oh, and Ricky Williams ? still linked to the Dolphins at least in the public eye ? failed another drug test. Wes Welker's gone, so is Travis Minor, Damion McIntosh, Tony Fonoti, Randy McMichael, David Bowens, Darian Barnes, and Joey Harrington. Solid blockers Mike Rosenthal and Cory Schlesinger were added, as was David Martin, Cameron Worrell, and Porter. In the draft, they raised eyebrows by selecting Ted Ginn, Jr. over Brady Quinn, while taking a quarterback (John Beck) in the second-round. Lorenzo Booker, a disappointment at Florida State, was a first day selection as well. It's a totally new team. That could, of course, be a good thing. Biggest gain: Ted Ginn, Jr., WR Biggest loss: Wes Welker, WR Are they in better shape than they were in January? Well, who's playing quarterback on opening day? Trent Green? Daunte Culpepper? John Beck? Cleo Lemon? A lot of questions like that down in Miami. The Dolphins could very well be the surprise team of the AFC. I just don't see it happening. 30. New York Giants Giants GM Jerry Reese started off his career as GM with a bang ? releasing starters LaVar Arrington, Carlos Emmons, Chad Morton, and Luke Pettigout within the first month of being hired. He just never followed up on replacing those players. On top of the questionable extensions for Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning, the Giants failed to address glaring needs on the offensive line over the course of the past three months. Starting center Shaun O'Hara was re-signed, but Big Blue waited until the second day of the draft to pick up some insurance for one of the league's most heavily penalized and porous units in '06. Tiki Barber's retirement obviously hurts the already sputtering offense as well. Are Reuben Droughns and rookie wideout Steve Smith enough to lift the unit to the next level? Is that patchwork linebacker corps good enough for the NFC East? I'm not sure. Biggest gain: Aaron Ross, DB Biggest loss: Tiki Barber, RB Are they in better shape than they were in January? Tough to say yes on this one. There are still question marks at defensive back, linebacker, and the offensive line. Is Brandon Jacobs ready to carry the load at running back? He's shown flashes, but may not be an every down kind of back. And Anthony Wright? When are the Giants going to sign a legitimate backup quarterback to put some heat on Eli Manning? Giants fans may hate hearing this ? but there's a solid chance they'll have a top 10 pick in the draft come next April.
H'mm now what happens if the Kraft-Belly-Pioli trio continue to out flank the Johnson-Man-Tan trio as they did this off season?
Why is it whenever anybody comes along posting the same views as me U immediately think it is me in a different user name? Did it EVER occur to you that out that in NYJ land there are others that have the same views that I may have?
On the first point. The only difference between the Jets offseason, and the Pats was that the Pats loaded up on receivers. Adalius Thomas was good addition for them, But Thomas Jones was just as good for us. They then went out and signed more Receivers than they can get on the field at once, unless you're going run-and shoot and eliminating the TE and FB. So what ? The Moss addition is a really good one, but they overpaid for Welker, and added Washington, and Stallworth plus the ones they had on the roster. (Gaffney, Caldwell, and Jackson) Who is getting cut come June? You arent keeping them all. On our side we added the Best CB in the draft, a Good LB, and a Feature TB. And then we loaded up on front seven physical talent, all of which will not be on the roster in June. Taking this list of players, Moss, Welker, Stallworth, Brady, Washington, Thomas, Meriweather Jones, Revis, Harris We are getting similar number of touches/tackles per game, in impact. And that is if not a single one of our off season front 7 additions pans out. On the second point you're correct, every one looks at Mangini as having resurrected a bad team, whn in fact minus the Injuries two seasons ago, this was a team competing for the Super Bowl.
You cant blame Tannenbaum and Mangini for all 38 years champ. You have been around long enough to see that it takes time to build through the draft. I think you will probably agree that this is a better team then the one Bradway and Herm left them. Is it a superbowl team? No...it takes time to build that kind of a team. This is the second..THE SECOND year. Not every new GM and Coach have the luxury of having a Tom Brady (6th round pick..so they didnt feel too good about him when he was taken) fall into their laps..because without him...there is a very good chance that Beli and Kraft would be searching for their first championship too.
The Pats are in a better position to outflank us as their team does not have many needs and just needs tweeking. So the Pats might win the div again next season , but its getting harder and harder for them to do it. I like the direction that the team is taking. Sometimes there are time which cause raised eyebrows , but overall I'm a believer which I havn't been for some time. Its just you seem to have the copyright on putting a negative slant on nearly everything good that is Jets. Don seems at times to have sprung from the same pod. It wouldn't be the first time that a poster has used an AKA , I'm sure.
I think that when we have as many areas of need that we should not be giving away 4 draft picks, 3 of which were in the top 100.
As far as the Bears go...Peterson could turn out to be a monster....but I think Jones will be that for us.....
I think there is actually an agreeable medium between the champ crew and the optimists. First, you can't deny the skepticism that champ refers to. I mean, it's been a long amount of time, with many coaches and GM's he seen since you have won. I am sure he has put his faith in many of those regimes, only to be disappointed. Conversely, to champ & co., this current regime does deserve a certain amount of credit and cache. They made what any fan would accept as a solid step forward in terms of wins, heart and play. Any NFL fan would not deny the Jets their respect in terms how tough you all played last season. In addition though, champ has seen this type of stuff from other teams (although every situation is unique) where they play at a higher level only to come back down to earth the following season. And sure that could happen here, but as an outside observer, I think the Jets are indeed becoming a top franchise. Do I think this season? Probably not, but hey, it can happen. I think champ gets a pretty bad rap around here but I also can see his point. But, I also think this regime is finally making solid progress. If any of this makes sense. [/Mr.KnowItAll] DW
I don't think Rome was built in 38 years, either. But just think, champ, once Jets Rome finally gets built you can go down and hang out at the vomitoriums again!
