9-7 is maybe a 50% chance at the playoffs. The way the AFC is playing this year 8-8 is probably there for some team as the 6 seed but probably not the Jets.
This pretty much summarizes what I think. Every week we see teams come out and play much better than expected, and we see teams come out and play much worse than expected. Does that mean that the first group "wanted it" and the second group didn't? I don't think so. Football is the kind of game where just a few plays can result in swings of 15, 20, or more points. If you play badly you can easily lose big. If people want to say that particular players (like Smith) aren't good enough I'm not going to argue, but I think that lack of talent is a lot more important than lack of desire.
If we put the handcuffs on Geno the rest of the way like we did to Sanchez in 2009, we can possibly go 4-2 and compete for that 6th seed. He simply can't be allowed to give any more games away. When he plays like he did today, we have no shot of beating anyone. The problem with doing that is, it may benefit us in the short term, but we still won't know if we have our QB. Honestly, I suspect that we don't. He plays stupid football. Just as an example ... How many times does this guy need to step out of bounds for a loss before he comprehends that he can literally take the ball with two hands and toss it out of bounds ahead of him and take no loss?? It's as simple as that, but 10 games in he still doesn't get it. Just a small thing that says a lot to me.
The Jets play 4 games against teams in the top 9 in run defense down the stretch. They also play two more against the Fins who are always a tough out for Rex. I think in order to have any shot at 4-2 down the stretch the Jets need to figure out how to run a balanced offense without displaying Geno's flaws too seriously. Run, run, run ain't going to do it against that schedule.

Today was a lateral movement. We still control our own destiny and have a relatively favorable schedule. Next weeks game is the most important of them all, though. We have to beat the Ravens so we can root for them to end the Steelers season on Thanksgiving.

I beg to differ. I'm not talking about looking downfield and trowing it OB when there's nothing there. Yes ... He's done that. I'm talking about time after time all season, when he's being chased toward the sideline where you can literally heave the ball directly out of bounds three feet in front of you before you take the last step. Instead of doing that, he steps out with the ball tucked away for a two or three yard loss. Just plain stupid. Makes me question his football sense. Am I the only one who's seen this?? He did it again today.
Unlike 2009, we don't have anybody who can cover a receiver in the secondary...so we need to have our QB make plays. Nor do we have as dominant a running game or O-Line

this doesn't make sense to me, why would throwing it forward with presumably a defensive player right in front of his face preventing forward progression be a good idea? Maybe I need I need to brush up on intentional grounding rules as well but wouldn't that qualify? I'm picturing him running to the sideline with joe linebacker a few yards in front of him making a b-line for where he'll end up and geno just kind of tossing it to the sideline without a receiver in the vicinity. I'm okay with being seen as ignorant on this as long as I get what you're saying because I honestly don't.
If he's out of the pocket (outside of the tackles) he can't be flagged for intentional grounding. There was one play in the game today, I don't remember exactly when it happened, where he ran out of bounds for a loss of a few yards where he clearly could have just tossed it away for an incompletion. I was shaking my head at that one too.
He can't just "heave the ball directly out of bounds three feet in front of him". That's intentional grounding. The ball has to get back to the line of scrimmage. By continuing running up field he is trying to get the most possible yards since intentional grounding is a spot foul. The Jets may rebound with a big performance for a tight win next week. They may also be tied at 5-6 with the Ravens and either the Steelers or the Browns. That last spot is going to come down to whoever gets lucky at this point. The Jets got very lucky in 2009. We'll see what happens this year.
