I hit some weird live bet parleys this year on the late night kick offs. Honestly don't even remember doing them in the moment but it sure was nice waking up to some $$$.
I agree we have a lot of holes. But the way to build a contender is mostly through the draft Look at KC and tell me how many Big free agent contracts they have. I mean tier 1. Look at the Patriots for 20 year and tell me how many they gave out. Look at the steelers and ravens... they don't do it. They sign contracts like Douglas did last year with easy outs. Save the bug contracts for homegrown players. It's the way to build a contender.
Every single team is active in FA in order to fill out a roster. It doesn't have to be high priced players. The Jets cap situation is primed to be active, and can certainly afford a top player or two without adversely affecting the long term strategy of drafting. The rest can be mid tier or even value pick ups to compete. The worse thing you can do imo is what we did last year. We had so much draft capital invested in Darnold, and they destroyed him by sitting on cap, letting good players walk while bringing on poor players, and retaining Gase. Whole team unraveled, players wanted out, etc. Douglas management of FA was pretty terrible in 2020.
So you are essentially saying what I have said. I'm not saying we do nothing. I am saying we skip past all the top free agents and their $20 million contracts. We get tier 2 or 3. Sucks as Sherman and Gabe Jackson. This provides us with the ability to get several free agent and up the overall talent, rather than pick up Thuney and Shaq Barret and only upgrade 2 spots
There is not "a way" to build a contender. Contenders can be put together in various ways. So do you think the 2009 and 2019 Jets were not contenders?
If JD skips Tier 1 FAs, it'll be at least 3 years, maybe 4-5 before the Jets are ready to be contenders with all the holes they have. To heck with that. With the cap space the Jets have and all the top 100 draft picks they can be very competitive this year, and unless JD is Idzik- or Mac-bad, the team can be a contender within a couple of years. That doesn't mean that JD has to go crazy and hand out big contracts to 32-year old players. I'm certain that he will only sign reasonable deals and protect the team with contract outs within a couple of years. It may be easy for some of you young guys to wait 5 years, but this fan who has been following this team for 56 years has had enough. I'm not willing to wait 5 years for JD to slowly build a contender through only the draft.
LOLOLOL You should see what I have rolling right now. On Twitter there's this guy who picks hockey and lately he's been terrible. Tonight I told him I'm going to fade every one of his picks, and of course, I'm killing it. I have also gotten into soccer. Betting Australia and New Zealand at 3am! Hilarious commentary during these games especially in New Zealand where a lot of the "stadiums" are in people's backyards. It's so funny when they kick it into someones yard. And you can hear the fans yelling at the announcers in their accents. The announcers are yelling back at the fans. So funny. Right now to finish up my great evening I have 2 soccer bets going in the Mexican league which it looks like I will win both. I also decided to roll the dice on Vancouver and the under since I'm already up a ton today and Canucks goalie has been hot. Still 0-0 so I have a shot at that parlay.
Very impatient. So because you're not willing to wait, the rest of us have to go along with a plan that is the opposite of how to build a winning long-term franchise.
Buffalo 13-3, built their team with free agency/trades, prove me wrong there. You can't It can work, just have to sign the right guys. - speaking of that. PLEASE sign John 'Smoke' Brown
It maybe 3 years. It maybe 2. It depends on how many he hits in the draft and in the discarded free agent market. Fact is out 2009 team wasn't a true contender. It was fun. But there was no way Sanchez got a superbowl ring. On top of that it shows exactly why you don't build a team through free agency, you can't sustain it. That team eventually crumbled and caused massive salary problems for years afterwards.
Left tackle, right guard, quarterback, runningbacks, top corner, tightend, both linebackers, etc. are all drafted. They have a nice blend and signed the right free agents at the right time for Allen to bloom. The core is still built through the draft though.
yeah but running back, TE and linebacker is their weakness . Their good players were FA/trade. Outside of Tredavious White and Josh Allen they haven't really drafted well. Which is probably why they made the move for Diggs
Linebacker is not their weakness. You just hate the fact that they're smaller guys but Edmunds and Milano are good players that give them a lot of flexibility. They need to add a run stuffing defensive tackle for sure. Their run defense was 17th this year and 11th last year and they didn't lose to the Chiefs because of their run defense. They nearly shut out the Ravens, the top run offense in the league.
The Ravens game was an anomaly. They stacked the box and Lamar Jackson flopped like he always does in the playoffs Buffalo's run D struggled all year and Edmunds was picked on a lot. Maybe they put too much on his plate? Idk.. The Chiefs coulda ran all over them if they wanted to, they did earlier in the year for almost 300 yards in their 1st matchup. Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer are the strengths of that defense
I guess. I mean I'd hardly call Edmunds and Milano a weakness even if they need to add a backer geared towards run stuffing to play the SAM.
I totally disagree. That team crumbled because Tanny traded away draft picks trading up, and they cut a number of their leaders and players that got them there. If a team is as solid and good as the Jets were, they may have taken a little step back as players aged out, but with wise drafting they should have not fallen far, and quickly rebounded. The problem there was Tanny was a bean counter and Rex was clueless regarding personnel. I guess you've forgotten that a missed FG kept the Jets from the SB in 2010.
I haven't dove into soccer but after getting crushed midseason in NCAAB I've moved a bit more into the NHL. The betting public is killing the NHL right now I believe so trying to bet with the public. Plus it gets me back into hockey after a 10+ year hiatus.
