Had to take some shots at you because of your condescending posts towards me. Telling a 50 year football fan they don't understand the relationship between a QB and a WR is a bit condescending. Thought you would pick up on it with my eye roll. Your strawman nonsense too. Whatever. I still want to hear your magical plan this offseason in full detail so everyone here can pick it apart and tell you that you're clueless. That would be quite entertaining.
In all honesty, and observing this discussion, 3 or 4 posters have already been disagreeing with you are picking apart your ridiculous assertions Please dont throw stones at NC if you live in a Glass House ahaha
I'll be honest, while I disagree with NC and do not want Wilson at all. I think he is right on the building offense thing. Saleh is a defense mind and while we should get a few fa for the d. We need to focus on offense. We shouldn't spend much at all on defense. We have been trying to build defense for 20 years and it gets you no where... where did it get SF? They get a trophy with a Saleh d? No. They had one decent year... we need to build the offense. I'm not saying we skip defense completely but until we have good players at the skill positions, a decent QB and oline, and our run game is worth talking about, defense will get us no where. We should take shot at middle of the pack fas and some day 2+ draft picks until then. So taking shots at someone just makes you the one seeming to know nothing.
And why am I supposed to care that 3 or 4 posters want to spend ridiculous sums of money on a WR before addressing our immediate concerns? They have their opinions and I have mine. Why are they right and I'm wrong? I want to build a team according to the philosophy of the coach we hired. That means prioritizing money and placing a value on certain positions. FS is not high on the totem pole. But, I don't have a problem with signing Maye long-term. It's not much money and we can structure the contract in a way that doesn't hurt in the future. But, FS is still not high on the totem pole in this defensive scheme. Last year I didn't want Bell. I didn't want Darnold when we drafted him. Killed for both opinions. Nothing changes. Sometimes you're right, sometimes you're wrong. So instead of acting like a child with your ahahaha nonsense, focus on my post. Nothing you can say will upset me. I've seen it all.
I agree we need to focus on offense and that's why I want Wilson and an O-Line. Once we get that in place, then move onto the receivers. However, you cannot blame Saleh for the injuries on offense in SF and their terrible QB play. And you're right, we've focused on defense in the past and it's got us nowhere. But that doesn't mean you go away from it just because poor decisions were made in the past on both sides of the ball. You need a complete team to win, right? All I'm saying is that we need to prioritize our spending and also spend it in a way that fits our new philosophy.
I won't disagree but I think the will reach a long-term deal with Maye. I think he will be here for a while and will get paid about 10m a year. I don't see that holding us back and it provides a stable leader in the secondary. To me it's fine and shows player we will reward good play and being a team player. I honestly don't want Wilson and I don't think he will succeed here. To many concerns, limited play, horrible competition and nothing here around him. If you look at the past teams to really draft a qb and them look good, most had piece in place around the qb. Mahomes went to a very stacked chiefs. Watson had Watts, Hopkins, and several other pieces. Allen to stacked Bills. Mayfield to a good Oline, Landry, added Beckham, etc. We have 2 piece on offense, Becton and Crowder.... we could try adding more in the draft. All unproven just like Mims... it's not a good place, especially for a guy with 1 decent year against garbage competition. Jets won some in garbage time the past few years with Darnold.
And another thing, this should be a two year plan since we have 2 first round picks next season. I'm not saying we're building a championship-caliber team in 2 years. What I'm saying is that we need to take a long-term approach, rather than going after the shiny new objects right away. WRs will always be there. We need to give Saleh the types of players that he needs to build his defense around while simultaneously building a quality O-Line. It starts right now. A veteran WR at a much cheaper price is fine this season. Throwing money at a star WR reminds me of Baker Mayfield having to throw to Beckham. Every time he dropped back his focus was always on Beckham which completely took his attention away from their other receivers. It resulted in a mess and hurt his development.
I think not spending on big free agents atm is the goal. Spend what we need. Sign tier 2 or 3 fas. Gabe Jackson, Curtis Samuel, Carlos Dunlap, Richard Sherman. Keep it cheaper and easier to negotiate. Save big spending for home grown talent and try to draft and develop. Teams that win generally don't sign big fa talent for a reason.
I'm not concerned about Maye. To me that position is not that important in this defense, but we still need good players. So I don't have a problem this offseason signing Maye to a long-term deal because we need as many good players as possible. We just disagree about Wilson. Not much to say there. Burrow went to a crappy Bengals team and Herbert went to a mediocre Chargers team. Both shined.
I agree with you there. However, spending money on an O-Lineman should be priority #1. Unless you want to surround a rookie with Becton and draft picks.
Both had good receivers. Herbert had a decent o line. If burrow had a decent online he would of been better. That said Burrow was the only surprise that year, Herbert was talked about before the college season that got him drafted. Burrow success was a 1 in a 100 chance. Wilson could easily be the other 99.
I think Fant will stay. I would like to see a 3 round guard. And some tier 2-3 fas. Gabe Jackson, Matt Skura, maybe Nick Martin. I would love a better RT, but I think Douglas sticks with Fant. Just don't wanna pay 15million for Thuney when we could get Jackson for 10.
I'm not going to pretend I'm an O-Line guru, so if you say that Gabe Jackson at 10 million is comparable to Thuney at 15 million, then I really have no reason to doubt you. That's why the good GMs win and the shitty ones don't. They overpay when they could have got someone just as good for cheaper. Not sure about Fant, but we do need veterans on the O-Line in year 1 if we have a rookie QB.
I watch a ton of college football, mainly the SEC since I live in Florida and also the Big 8 or Big 12 whatever they call it today since I love the offense. I also watch the Mountain West because I bet a lot and am up late watching games that start at 11pm. Not much of a fan of the Pac 10, but I did like Herbert a lot in college. Miami should have drafted him. Wilson is a different QB from those 2. I'm not going to sit here and say he is automatic because you just never know until they step onto an NFL field. So you have to judge him by his skill set and to me, it is off the charts. He can make every throw with accuracy and power. Whoever said he can't throw the deep ball has not been paying attention. Maybe he can't throw it 70 yards in the air, but he sure as hell can throw in the 50-60 yard range easily and on target. Plus he's mobile and can throw across his body with accuracy and zip. He runs and is not afraid to take on the defense. While Herbert and Burrow are more traditional types, I look at Wilson as more of a hybrid & a combination of different types of QBs who will always get yards because he can scramble and make accurate throws. He also throws quick underneath passes before the defense figures out what's going on. That is impressive plus he is great at improvising when a play breaks down. Very intelligent too. I also like building from within, which is why I would prefer Wilson over Watson. Not to say Wilson will be better, but I hate buying a team. I love drafting one. That is where the great GMs shine. What would you like us to do at QB? Do you prefer we draft someone else, trade for Watson or keep Darnold? Or perhaps another QB that I haven't mentioned.
You're the one who basically said that WR is not important and could wait. You're the one who wants to draft a QB, and then not help him by getting him a very good/great veteran WR to help him develop and ensure that he develops, and instead, wants to focus on building the defense. I'm sorry, but imo if someone doesn't understand why a rookie QB would need a reliable vet WR, then imo that suggests that they either don't understand the WR/QB relationship or don't understand how to build a roster, and I gave you credit for the latter because you want to take a QB at #2. You understand the importance of getting a QB, but not the importance of building around him. IMO anyone that's been watching the NFL for 50 years should know why a rookie QB needs reliable veteran WRs and shouldn't think that a WR can wait til later. You're putting making Saleh happy over what's best for the team. You're proving the point of all those posters who think we should just trade down this year and build the team rather than taking a QB, because otherwise the rookie QB would be in the same circumstances as Sam was and wouldn't have a chance. Then we'd be looking to move on from him in 2-3 years. If JD isn't going to focus on building the offense around whomever the QB is, then the Johnsons might as well go ahead and fire him now, because JD isn't smart, doesn't understand roste building, and we'll have the same freaking mess in 2-3 years that we have now. I saw your eye roll. I'm good and have no need to discuss anything else further at this point. It would be pointless, because we obviously see things very differently, and I see no chance of any agreement or consensus. Any further discussion will just lead to frustration and anger on both our parts. Peace out.
I don't get frustrated and I don't get angry. I never take it personally. Everything you write is your opinion which you are 100% entitled to. Just as i am entitled to post mine. That's why we have a message board where it is fun to disagree. Most of the time we only comment on posts where we disagree because there really is no reason to say hey I agree with you and have a discussion about agreeing with each other. That doesn't promote debate. While I respect your opinion, we just disagree on a few things. Mainly we are in agreement, it's just how we get there. I'm looking at a 2 year window since we have 2 first round picks next season. Not saying we're winning a championship, just building the foundation of the team in 2 years. Then adding onto that as we move along. I'm about establishing a solid foundation first before bringing in the shiny objects. That's my team building pihilosophy. Why hire Saleh who has a specific type of defense he likes to run if we're not going to get him players that fit his style? That doesn't make any sense to me. I think JD hired Saleh because both are on the same page when it comes to building a team. Thats why I keep bringing up his scheme since it is the same philosophy that JD has, otherwise he would have hired someone else.
The Jets need to spend a chunk of the money, and Douglas has said that where value and opportunity meet, that he will be aggressive. There should be great value in FA this year with so many teams over the cap and having to release players. I think the Jets will be big players in FA. When they have the opportunity to sign 25/26-year old FAs, why should they pass and say, "No, I'm going to wait and build through the draft even if it takes 5 years to build a competitive team."? That makes no sense to me. With all the cap space they have, the can get immediately better. How long are Jets fans supposed to wait for the team to be competitive and to make the playoffs again? By signing Thuney, Davis (WR), one of Shaq Barrett, Carl Lawson, Trey Hendrickson, and Romeo Okwara, one of Tyus Bowser, Jayon Brown and Nicholas Morrow, and CJ Beathard, I think the team could win 8-9 games this year and be competitive. Why should they eschew Tier one FAs and only look at Tier 2 & 3? It would be one thing if they were all 30 years old or older and still horribly expensive. Teams aren't built only via the draft. Trades and FA are a part of building a winning team. Look at the 2009-2010 teams. They would have gone nowhere if none of those FAs or trades had been made. Look at 2015. The same thing. I trust that JD won't go crazy and overspend and will have a limit as to how high he will go on contracts. To date he has been great in negotiations, contracts and trades. There's no reason to think he won't be this year.
We have so many gaping holes on this roster though. While I agree with your earlier post that Offense needs a lot of focus, you can't simply forget about all the defensive needs either. To accomplish filling all these holes, Douglas HAS to be very very active in FA this year. That doesn't necessarily mean sign all high priced guys, but it will be necessary to fill out a functioning roster. Douglas did a very poor job in FA last year, I hope he's learned a little from it.
Nothing better than some recovery bets on Mountain West games on an 11PM kickoff man. No sarcasm. I'll tag you when the season starts up a couple of us talk share bets during the season in the virtual vegas forum. We crushed the Sun Belt this year.
