I think we need more than just 1st and 2nd round pick to build. 3d and 4th round picks are pretty good as well. #3 is top 75 pick. That can be a starter on DL. And even the 4th rounder, that's #110 overall, 8th pick in the 4th round. That could be a starter or a top back-up at safety, a top DL back-up or a good TE. We need all the help we can get. Now, if you tell me you want to give it a shot with a 5th round pick or below, we are now talking 145 or below, maybe. But 110 or above, a hard no for me. We already have a young starting QB we need to evaluate. We have a top back-up QB. We spent a 5th round pick last year on low probability hit in Jordan Travis. I just think we are good at QB for now, and if Travis still is not ready, cut him and use extra spot for another position. I don't really want to carry 3 QBs on the roster this year anyway. I would not draft another QB this year, with a possible exception of a 5th round or below, and even then that's not ideal.
I agree that the Jets would like to feel that they have found their quarterback of the future. And I think they believe they have, pending this year‘s results. If that is true, their focus this year will be on giving Fields every asset they can so he succeeds. Therefore, I think their focus will be on drafting a right tackle and as many offensive weapons as they can find on their board. Of course, a good defense will take some of the pressure off Fields, too, so I expect that they’ll also be drafting a DT, DE, and S. If Fields bombs out, this will put them in a great position for one of the great QB prospects who’ll be available in next year’s draft.
I said something similar earlier. This is how I feel as well. One note on Travis, from last year. If that kid isn't ready to get on the field then why in hell was he drafted? For a guy, for all intents and purposes, who was supposed to be a low 1st/day 2 pick last year if it weren't for the injury, I've not heard shit about him, what he looks like nor any form of progress update. Now, maybe AG and team are too new to offer an opinion, but I'd like to see anyone offer something. This kid/pick perplexes me, what is the END GAME with him? QB is too important a position to just be "draft a guy."
We need the following starters: RT, WR, TE, S, DT, DE. Plus depth across the board. I know we are not going to solve everything with the draft, but there is simply no room to spend any one of our top 4 picks (110 or better) on a QB, where we already have Fields, Taylor, and Travis under contract.
AG did offer an update of sorts. He basically said he was good in College and when he is ready to play, he will compete, but he does not know when because he is not a doctor. What that means is that Travis is still injured. It does not look good for him. I think the next step for him is just what AG said: get cleared by the doctor and get to training camp. We just won't know any more until then. It does not look great, if he makes a roster, great, but just can't count on him. However, that does not mean we need to draft another QB with a later pick. If he is ready and makes the team, great, if not, I am very comfortable going with 2 QBs on the roster (Fields and Taylor are both good and highly paid) and using a roster spot on some other position, and have some emergency QB on practice squad.
Oh, no worries. I wasn't making that statement to support drafting a QB. Far from it. I was just musing. Wondering if Travis was, yet again, another wasted pick. He's here now so he better be on the field this year. If that regime drafted a guy so hurt he couldn't get on the field for 2 years then he better be so good he's the 2nd coming of Peyton freakin' Manning.
I’m not arguing for or against drafting a QB but this logic is flawed. Having a young previously failed stop gap QB on the roster (2 year contract) with a 36 year old backup shouldn’t prevent the team from taking a potential franchise QB at 7 if they deem someone worthy of that pick. Travis is a nobody in this league and I doubt he has any sort of arm talent to be somebody. He should not and likely does not matter in the decision making at 7 at all.
I’m with you on that. If the GM and CS see someone that could develop into our Franchise QB you take a chance. This year, next year, and every year after that till we find our guy. Hardness position in the entire draft to fill. If JF turns out as our guy, the better for us. Having said that, I don’t see them making a move with the first two picks for sure, but many senior analysts believe if their guy McCord is there with the second pick they will get him and groom him. It will be an interesting draft.
I’m fine with this in theory, but the jets have so many holes to fill that they really shouldn’t spend picks on project QBs if there are real projected players available.
Theoretically sure, but I don't see anyone worthy of a pick at 7. We are talking about this specific draft. Cam is gone at #1, others are not great.
It’s all about your opinions of Shedeur though. I’d take him at 7 and never look back. Sit him year 1 and let him rock in year 2. I’d also be intrigued by Jalen Milroe at the same spot, maybe even moreso as a redshirt. I think they will both end up as better pro’s (even if not great) than Cam Ward.
We have a lot of needs but if Shadeur is there at 7 you have to take him IMO especially since QB is one of those needs!!
Qb situation has some parallels to Vikings last year. Could JF parallel Darnold, I.e. someone with question marks but finally puts it together (with the supposed starting qb drafted and waiting) from a positional value perspective using 7 for a RT, TE makes very little sense to me fingers crossed we get some good ones
from Rapaport "#Michigan DL Mason Graham, one of this Draft’s elite prospects, is visiting the #Jets tomorrow, source said. NYJ has spent a considerable amount of time with Graham, including formal interview at the Combine, dinner the night before his Pro Day and now the Top 30 visit." that's a lot of time spent with a guy. If hes the selection I wont hate on it, hes a real football player
If he is there at 7th, is probably because both top O tackles are gone, so I’m totally on board. We would have a great D line for a change, premium against the run, and when Q contract expires, we have the option to trade him if the price is exorbitant.
50m invested into two players that likely won’t be able to line up next to each other. We’re literally paying our own version of Mason Graham almost $30m and people want us to draft another one? Again???
If the NY Jets draft Sanders at 7, that ends my fandom. I'm sick and tired of this team REACHING on these mother f'n QB's. If they aren't as sure fire, blue chip, smoked everyone they ever encountered in college, then I do not want them. I want as sure a bet as this team can possibly manage. What I sure as HELL don't want is a kid that even all 32 teams can't come to consensus on a 1st round grade. Hell, there are a couple teams that have Sanders as borderline 2nd/3rd round. Hey, if he's there on day 2, great! NOT at 7 in the 1st round. no no no no no nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
What? Two run-stuffing DLs that can also get to the QB can't line up next to each other? And Q counts for $21 mil (not "almost $30 mil) on the cap this year, the 7th overall pick counts for $5 mil on the cap this year. Those total do not equal $50 mil. If we walk away with Graham at 7 I'll be thrilled. Far more thrilled than if we end up with a right tackle.
Idk did you see the Eagles wreck the whole league with that defensive line? but maybe they are dumb too
which teams have Sanders as a borderline 2nd/3rd round grade? and how did you find that information out?
