We aren't running the ball because it's not effective. The O line is not creating holes or keeping defenders out of the backfield

You're probably going to see the running game struggle even when it "gets going" by most of our standards. I'm thinking these defenses are going to prepare to stop the run and make Sanchez make the plays to beat them.

I tend to agree it is more the OL, but Greene has not shown much, either. I know, what chances has he had to do so? But I don't see much spark from him, even aside from OL problems.

Anyway, on the OL. I think the Jets unfortunately are in for a rough patch at least until Mangold gets back. Word out of Jetland is that they will not make a move to get another center in there, and effectively will rely on Baxter. Baxter is not the only issue, however. Even if Mangold and Woody were still playing right now, Slauson was still in year two of playing RG, and imo had some improvements still to be made. The perenially solid Moore has not made much of an impression yet, I don't think. And Hunter's poor play is frankly inexplicable, given how good he looked at the end of last year. Don't forget Turner is out, and that doesn't help, either.

Well, if there's a silver lining, Baxter surely has been given the chance to show he belongs on a platter. Let's hope he makes the most of it.

But realistically, I fear given the apparent strength of hte Pats, that losses in two of the next three may well follow from Mangold's absence, and hopefully that's the worst of it. I hope no one else gets hurt.

I may get killed for this, but I've been weary of Greene since last season. Not sure that he's an every down back. Fact is, besides '09, he hasn't really done anything. I'm not saying he's a waste, but I'm just not one of those people who think that he's going to explode any day now.

There's a reason we drafted a running back this year. Greene has been a dissapointment to more than just the fans.

Greene has been lackluster but there has been nowhere to run. Adrian Peterson would have a tough time getting yardage behind the O-Line's run blocking lately.

I think the Cowboys and Jaguars front 7 deserves some credit as well. Jaguars shut down Chris Johnson week 1 and the Cowboys held the 49ers to about 50 rushing yards.

Greene is squeezing out whatever he can manage. The running lanes are clogged at the LOS were lucky he can trudge forward for 2-3 yards hes getting at this point.

I think its even comical to question Greene. his only questions should be

1)Staying healthy with an increased workload (which hes yet to receive cause of the blocking.)

    2)Holding onto the ball

3)Improving his hands out the backfield

we all know what he can do when he has blocking, the blocking just isnt there. case closed

So, the Jets should not run on first down? What is meant by "very predictable"?

Look at the play by play. First quarter, Greene's first three runs are spread off left tackle, up the middle and right tackle. But... those were hardly the only types of first down plays. Mixed in on first and ten was Sanchez's TD pass to Holmes in the end zone for 17 yards, and a shotgun play with the ball hiked to LT. Some would say the latter is too much of a trick play. But it is hardly "very predictable."

On the Jets' final possession of the first quarter, they had three first downs, and ran Greene, this time off right tackle, only one of them. The other two were passes.

2nd Quarter. First play on first and ten, MS scrambles for five yards on an intended passing down. Personal foul called on Jville. Next was the Cro end around, again, didn't pick up much, but hardly predictable. Next play MS scrambled for 15 yards, called back on Hunter's personal foul. So of course on first and 25 they throw.

Next first and ten was Hunter's holding call on a running play, followed by Greene taking back 10 yards on first and 20. They shouldn't have run there?

Next first and ten, Sanchez attempted a pass. Incomplete. Final first and ten was on the Jville 26 with 1:20 to go. Left tackle for LT didn't pick up much, concededly.

Call me crazy, but I don't think those first down calls were "very predictable."

I didn't bother going over the second half in as great detail, mostly because the Jets were well ahead, particularly after Cro's interception, followed by Greene's running it in on second down, after not getting it on first - should they have tried a "less predictable" play there? And of course before that their previous touchdown drive began with a first down pass to Keller that picked up 37 yards.

Nope. I don't see "very predictable" playcallig on first down.

I thought we were running the ball fine until Mangold got hurt, Greene seemed to be getting in a groove at that point.

O line is getting no push so you can't fault Greene at all. He doesn't even have a chance to hit the point attack and he has to make a move right away which blows up the play immediately. He is a straight ahead down hill type runner and if he can't even get to the line of scrimmage to see a crease he isn't gonna be effective.

At first glance, I would tend to agree with some of the posters thinking Greene isn't getting it done.

However, when you peel back the onion layers, this issue stems from the lockout more than anything else.

The lockout lead to a lack of conditioning and practice. Compound the lack of time the OL needs to synch with the "new guys", plus shortened OTAs etc, throw in the injuries during preseason, and you have a disaster waiting to unfold.

I don't even think Hunter is playing that bad (sans DWare), but he is out of synch with the rest of the guys on the line and the rest of the guys are only a step or 2 ahead of Hunter.

We had four of five returning last year to the OLine and we have 4 of 5 returning this year. The difference is the time in camp, OTAs and pre-season injuries. Its the same 2 running backs as last year, when Greene was predicted to carry the load.

weakened O-line + playing 2 teams whose defensive "strength" is their Line/ front seven = diminished running attack

you ppl make me laugh saying greene is dissappointing... no running back is good without a solid o-line... the past few years weve had a great running attack because our o-line was manhandling ppl... IMO just about every running back in this league is capable of becoming a star if he has the blocking for it... these guys dont get drafted into the NFL for nothing... greene especially... hes a strong powerback with good enough speed to make an impact... weve seen how he can hit a hole, weve seen how he can run over a guy, and this year so far hes actually made a few catches... i am NOT down on greene whatsoever. if you cant see that our o-line is the problem with our running attack right now you either do not know anything about football or just have your eye on the RB the whole time and are not watching the whole play.

On this forum we seem to have an issue with the middle ground between "he sucks" and "he's proven his greatness!" Greene is not deserving of either tag.

But it's his third year, and he's yet to establish he's a proven talent on the level of being a competitive NFL team's main running back. Yeah, it's unfair to him that the OL is so shakey right now. We all agree that affects his performance.

But by the same token he's not shown he meets the aforementioned standard.

Maybe my vantage point sucked at the stadium but it seemed like Greene wasn't reeling off too much yardage back there.

Greene has shown flashes of huge talent there has to be a reason for his lack of carries beyond the talent issue. It appears to me that there is a lack of trust and they may well have drafted a running back again this year to both send a message and prepare for the worst.

The problem is that even last year he didn't show all that much. You can say what you want, but Greene was meant to be starter last year and LT completely outclassed him. If Greene played last year like he had the year before when he broke out in the 2nd half of the year, then he should have had no issue outplaying LT. He hasn't shown that since the AFCCG in 2009.

I'm still pulling for him to break out at some point, but my hopes aren't as high as they once were.

Take this with a grain of salt, as I will say up front I am very partial to the need for FBs, which the league seems to be going away from. However, I think we have a potential star in John Conner, and I think he's not getting on the field enough. A stronk blocking FB can help open the holes the O-line seems to be struggling to create. I was happy to see him with a nice catch out of the backfield. I hope they start putting him in more packages.

It is not just poor blocking. Teams are expecting run and know our tendencies. Schotty needs to mix it up, but with three average skilled players still learning starting roles it would be tough to accomplish.

What is nice is that instead of bringing in a run heavy set with Turner, we are using 3 TEs, two of which are good receiving options. We should be really successful using this formation.

Lack of trust in year one was because he put the ball on the ground too often. Last year, at first he wasn't getting the yardage LT did early on. What else might be going on, I don't really know.
